I don't see them going so young with Babcock as a coach. I think that'll force a trade, probably Nylander. If he gets his value back up he should net them a good defenseman. The depth will still be an issue.
Yes I agree, how much stock do you put in Dubas' not going to trade Nylander promise?

I think that will be the move they make though, for a young top 4 dman

Also for what it's worth a lot of media have already stirred up chatter about when Babs will be fired

As much as I question these deals, I don't think they'll be catastrophic if the cap goes up. But if it stagnates, as recently predicted in a CJ article, the Leafs are gonna be forced to make a move next year.

I think Dubas's big mistake was jumping the gun on Matthews's contract. If he had to let it drag out to get the cap hit down, he should have let it drag out. Getting Matthews for an Eichel deal gets the Marner deal under 10, and suddenly they're still in trouble, but in better shape. Particularly when other RFAs come up.

I have said it before and I will say it say it again you do not nickel and dime your your stars, you can do that with Kapanen, Johnsson, Hyman, Kerfoot because they are depth players, very VERY good depth players and it would suck to lose them but they are still only depth players they can be replaced, the core can't.

Matthews Can't Marner can't Nylander can't Tavares can't Rielly Can't Andersen can't

Interesting listening to Darren Ferris on First Up TSN radio this morning. I would recommend the listen.

Landsberg basically asked him did the Team's pay structure IE. Matthews contract factor into Marner's asking price? Ferris answered yes.

? Because this is the first time, so far as I know, we've seen teams acquire LTIR space to get cap compliant. If you think a team like Arizona is just gonna give that away, well, good luck with that. Nobody's gonna do you a favor for free.

I'd don't know about that. the Leafs got the $5mil of David Clarkson and a 4th for Garrett Sparks. :sarcasm:

Is it good enough to make the playoffs with 10 other players that will contribute next to nothing? This team barely made the playoffs last year. Where has this team improved from last year? Virtually all the players you mentioned were with the team last year! Are you sure the changes they made are improvements? Is Kerfoot an improvement over Kadri? Is Barrie an improvement over Gardiner? Is Cici and improvement over Z. Have they improved in any category at all? Highly QUESTIONABLE!
LOL, at team that finished tied for 7th overall and had the 4th best goal diff in the league, "barely made the playoffs". Got ya...

LTIR allows you to exceed the cap the same value of the contract. But the contract value also gets added to your cap hit. So if you're exactly at the cap limit and not using LTIR, and you acquire a $7m LTIR contract to your payroll, then you get granted the ability to exceed the cap by $7m (the value of the contract), but that contract getting added to your payroll also causes you to exceed the cap by $7m (the value of the contract), and therefore you don't get granted any additional space beyond the LTIR contract itself.

I know all of that's why I want them to pick up as many LTIR contracts as possible they are a cap team I want them to exploit all the loopholes they can especially this year because I feel like this is their year

Ferris also noted, the vilification of Paul Marner ridiculous, and bullying.
Other notes.

-2 offer sheets were presented to Marner. Marner didn't want to sign. Suspected more would have came when the season began.
-Noted that all Marner wanted was to be treated fairly to his Team comparables.
-Landsberg followed up with a question, had Matthews signed for less, would Marner signed for less. Ferris declined to answer, which was basically a no brainer answer if he didn't admit Marner just wanted to be paid fairly to the team comparables.

And this pretty much proves what we said all along. Dubas screwed up overpaying and has to keep overpaying for anyone of worth that values team comparables. It was a no brainer when we first said it and is no different now. That's what this is about and always has been.

Kyle Dubas, you just can't trust him to negotiate big stakes deals.

I did have a little chuckle listening to Ferris say Dubas did a good job. His client just got some big dollars, so I would not expect him to say anything else!

Yes Dubas set the bar high on contracts, and players rightfully used team comparables to push the negotiations to their favour. As Dubas admitted, he made mistakes. Now Leafs are going to have to pay more for their top players with their internal salary structure. Just wait until Rielly re-signs. He is not going to get the team friendly deal Lou got him to sign for.

I think you misunderstood my post. Acquiring LTIR contracts does not provide space to spend more on the cap.

yes why dont you also post the other part where marner was presented two offer sheet offers that were good but marner declinded them cause he wanted to be here.... i thought he didnt get no offer sheets tho cause no other gm would pay him this much lo

Great interview with Darren Faris https://www.tsn.ca/radio/toronto-10...ts-presented-to-mitch-in-the-summer-1.1366324
Mitch had 2 offersheets out there, coplejts Dubas on how hard he worked to get a fair contract, pointed out the unfairness of how people ( many leaf fans treated Paul Marner and that most of the information out there was nonsense. Great interview l. Should put TWS and the other room and gloomers to rest. Worth listening to!

Curious to see how this impacts Patrik Laine and other RFA’s.

And then when he said if Matthews took less. He would take less?

And he said. It’s not based on Matthews.

I was wondering when the spin/damage control would set in. Surprised it took this long.

I’ve noticed every new huge money contract comes with some sort of caveat that makes the player look less greedy. All damage control.

Tavares left money on the table. As did Panarin. Matthews “generously” (lol) took less term to lower the aav. McDavid took less than what was offered. And now Marner “turned down offer sheets”.

When players take contracts that big, that hurt the team, some sort of spin needs to happen to save face in front of the fans.

I knew it would happen. And here it is.

For all we know (if they really happened), the offer sheets could have been as low as the Aho offer sheet.

Anything to make these guys look less greedy.

Congrats Dubas!!!! Wow got Nylander, Marner, Matthews, Tavares, Kap, Johnsson upgraded the D with a team close to the cap ceiling. Enjoy this season but next offseason will be fun too

Actually what he said was “I can’t speculate about what would have happened, it’s not just about Matthews”
