You can laugh all you want but Toronto finished 2 points ahead of the 8th seed and 4 points ahead of Montreal who was chasing them in the division. I wouldn't necessarily say they barely made it but it's a subjective term and certainly not a lol worth claim. Goal differential and standings including the western conference are completely irrelevant when discussing how close a team is to making or missing the playoffs.

The leafs have a #1D, 2 top pairing guys (Barrie + Muzzin), a good young bottom 4D (Dermott) and whatever Ceci is.

That is a pretty stacked defense unless Barrie and Muzzin are suddenly not top pairing guys in Toronto unlike they were viewed previously .

It's hard for it not to be Nylander. The other guys don't have the value to net a legit, what, #3? And if they raise their value to that point, suddenly their contracts are too valuable to move.

Dubas really shouldn't be giving out those types of promises anyway. He has to have a gear where he's more of an adversary than a player's friend, and he hasn't shown that gear yet.

There arent that many teams with a better defense than Toronto has this year. Unless suddenly Muzzin is not the top pairing guy he was viewed as in LA or Barrie isnt the offensive wizard he was a few months ago for the Avs.

I think you're under-estimating how costly 2-3 ELC defenseman on the same roster can be.

Barrie is a 7-8. Muzzin a 5-6. So rookie D core or what? Marincin special? Yeah I don't like that inexperienced D core for a contender. Its pretty weak.

This is our year or best chance. They need to get to work though, after this year it gets a little worse each year after due to cap.

This year is likely their best chance for the next while but if the cap rises significantly in the next few years like is predicted we may see another very good window near the end of the current big contracts

3 years? Not saying he hasn’t done a good job in his time there but let’s be realistic.
