Except of course you couldn't. Some GMs overpay their depth at the possible expense of talent. THAT you can't do. If you develop a system that churns out NHL caliber depth talent and appropriately pay your depth though, then you can afford to compensate your guns.

What are you saying is: because other GM's are doing more stupid things, this is OK....

Why would they do that?

I was under the impression they got the clarkson contract to help with the Marner signing

They had Horton already, and like you said they acquired Clarkson. That acquisition wasn't so much as to "Help with Marner" (it does help with Marner), it more "Helps gain optimal efficiency of LTIR cap relief".

Let's say Marner was offershat away early in the summer for a set of picks so Leafs don't have to plan for him. They will choose to do things like resign Gardiner, maybe they still trade Kadri and Zaitsev to upgrade the defense but who knows. The point being is that they won't want (or need) to run the season using only $76.2m in roster players ($81.5m - $5.3m). They'll want to use $81.5m in roster upgrades. To do that, they need to go into LTIR, and to make optimal use of LTIR, they'll want to pull in something like Clarkson's deal in so that they can go into LTIR before they have an actual in-season injury and still use up as close to 100% of their potential relief possible.

Dubas really screwed up with the Mathews contracts but that said the leafs will be fine , 3 superstar forwards up front with good depth at forward and good D on paper plus a good goalie. They will be a good regular season team next year

I keep laughing at the "we can, and we did" etc comments.

It's like they had only 25 million to sign the last 3 big contracts. OF COURSE THEY "COULD"

It is to what extent they "should have".

We can and we will/did sound slike a kid with daddys bank account who just overblew his wad on 3 guys lol. Of course they were going to sign them.

I love all the Canadian Franchises and want to see them make the Playoffs in the near future.

That being said, I am perplexed by the number of negative posts which greet each rationale comment made by a post by even the most diplomatic TML supporting member. Let's just enjoy the renaissance of scoring & entertainment in the NHL. We all deserve it as hockey fans IMHO.
We can
We will
We did

Get over it

Yet you wonder why people criticize the leafs and it's fans

You're just delusional if you think this somehow impresses everyone other than the Leafs fanbase who continue to play the victim

Marner was overpaid... not our money, so big deal. The Cap will be a challenge, but that's why they brought in Pridham.

Now we get to sit back, and see what happens on the ice. Everyone is in camp on time, nobody is missing games. 11 RFA's for other teams not signed yet... and is was clear, Nylander sitting out, hurt his play, and the team. What happens on the ice, is all that matters now. Maybe the team is successful, maybe they suck. All the arguing in here, all the opinions, BS generalizations, won't mean a thing. Who gets paid how much, just doesn't matter now... History will be the judge, let's see how the season goes.

I'm saying you couldn't overpay everyone on your team because there is a cap. You CAN overpay some. As a manager, if you are going to "overpay" some, better it be your stars. They are more likely to live up to it and more likely to afford a return if you ever move on. If you can field a quality team by churning out quality depth, I could care less how they allocate things.

It’s funny because none of this can possibly matter until next season and I’m sure the leafs will be fine then as well.
Dubas and leafs fans could not give a single f*** if the rfa pay rate has been altered or unaltered; its absolutely of no concern or consequence to us.
Ciao!

No it doesn’t. The Leafs applied for special consideration from the league and got it.

The salary cap is 81.5 million for all NHL teams yet the Maple Leafs are currently at $95 million used.

The Jets give up half their defense to sign Laine and Conner and have to sweat it out.
Wtf is this garbage.

Sounds like a lot of people after they signed Tavares.

"Stupid Leaf fans. No marquee player signs there."

"Everyone knew he was signing there."

I don’t know. Bettman must like the Leafs to allow them to go over the cap like that.

The Jets should have traded for LTIR contracts, obviously.

Kind of hilarious how we hear about fans being sick of hearing about Leaf stuff, but Marner is now signed, and we are on part 3 of his signing and only hit part 2 for any other player all summer. Before the excuse was everyone was waiting on Marner.

Hell, Laine is with a team in Sweden right now and silence.

Switzerland and Sweden is not the same. ;)

$94.865 mil
less LTIR -> $10.55 mil
= $83.30 mil

Start with Roster size of 20 players.. So take off say Petan, Shore, Agostino so less $2.2625

= $81.03 million.

Math isn't hard. ;)
