The simplest and likeliest explanation is that there never was a rift, it was a manufactured story and the Leafs were always going to give him full bonuses. But of course that's boring and makes the Leafs look competent, so people will run with other narratives.

This is pure speculation, but it could be that Shanahan (or someone else high up in MLSE) saw the story, told Lou to buck up and end the crap before it became a bigger media s***storm. Whether Lou was holding out, or they just weren't talking and there was no problem, there was no reason to continue to let this play out in the media.

For people saying they could wait till training camp to sign him, could you imagine the furor in the press if it went that far? This was always going to end up with this contract, why build drama?

I don't know about that. Training camp for the KHL starts in a couple of weeks. It is believed that Matthews had a KHL contract in one hand, and a gun in the other, which he held to Lamoriello's head. One person told me Lamoriello almost balked anyway, noting that he'd lived a long, good life already, but then Matthews threatened his family and he had no choice but to cave.
