Lou had to buckle. There was simply no way he was going to win this battle. I wonder how pissed he is right now.

No surprise he got the max. Lou can't be happy about that, but what can do you do? He's worth it and it's completely fair considering what his peers got.

Probably not at all, since he knew Matthews would get the max, and McGran's story was completely fabricated.

Out of the last 10 1OA picks, this is the 5th latest signing date. Everything about this process was ordinary. This was a complete non-story.

If they were going to give him max bonuses, why didn't they just sign him right away? Stupid move by Lou who is an outdated GM in my opinion. They have already hurt their relationship with Matthews for no good reason.

Are you really that naive to think there was any truth to that article? Dont you think its a coincidence that this was signed the very next day? This is Lou and MLSE discrediting that very article.

I'm not certain why people think that Lou buckled, or that there was even a remote chance that Matthews wouldn't get full bonuses. It's kind of funny really.

If Lou was going to "cave" it wouldn't be in July.

The simplest and likeliest explanation is that there never was a rift, it was a manufactured story and the Leafs were always going to give him full bonuses. But of course that's boring and makes the Leafs look competent, so people will run with other narratives.

We do not know for sure, but it is quite possible. Perhaps Shanny read the article, called Lou into the office, giving him a lecture about how much heat they would get, proving the Star right

The article was rehashing old ideas which Shanny commented on two weeks ago.

Never underrate the massive damage you can inflict with less than one month of negotiation.

It's not as simple as "max deal here you go"...

As people have already stated, they negotiate what specific bonuses to include and how much they count for. That takes time. And he didn't even sign unusually late.

This was all ordinary, and blown way out of proportion by media speculation (because there are never leaks in the Leafs anymore).

I don't get it either.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark...

A peep never came from the Matthews camp or the Leafs camp. It was completely media driven based on what Lou has done in the past. But not what he has done since joining Toronto.

Until is actually proven Lou was against bonuses in TORONTO I don't know If I believe it.

New Jersey and Toronto are different beasts, Shanny said himself he told Babcock and Lou that this isn't Detroit or New Jersey, it's Toronto.

And they sign players to bonuses here.

It's crazy how stupidly it blew out of control.

People just wanted to kick the Leafs for something, no matter how logic defying or how little sense it made.

The narrative now is that Lou "caved" over a non-existent battle. And people wonder why no one hates the Toronto media more than Leafs fans themselves. If McGran doesn't publish that baseless article this hoopla never happens.

Toronto media is the Leafs #1 enemy. No wonder Shanahan and co. have completely iced them out.
