So, we know someone caved.

Would be interesting to know which side did.

Who says someone caved? Maybe the timing wasn't right. Maybe he was on vacation and didn't want to worry about a contract then knowing they will eventually get one done. People look way to into stuff.

"Max bonuses" doesn't really mean much. It just means he has the maximum in each category.

I'm interested to see if he has the full 212.5k per category at the bare minimum (a la McDavid) or if it's more distributed. I was saying last night that I expect him to get max bonuses but probably a little more distributed than McDavid got.

Huh?

Maybe Lou has been sipping on margaritas in Hawaii for the past two weeks and just started negotiating.. There is zero CREDIBLE reports that the Leafs tried to short change the Matthews camp, ZERO. Most of the reports have came from stiffs who have zero idea what they're talking about.

It's done, great for both Matthews and the Leafs and their fans.

The questions sounds more to be not if he'd get all the bonuses, but how they'd be scheduled and rewarded.

ding ding ding

most people don't realize how the performance bonuses work. it's way more about the schedule/structure than the total amount.

McDavid's bonus package had the maximum $ for each of the bare minimums in each category, maximizing his chances to earn the capped 850k each year.

This is very different from, say, other players who may have a smaller bonus at the minimum and the rest of the $$$ for higher milestones (or not at all).

Based on McDavid's ELC, it's a base of 925k, 92.5k in signing bonuses and 2.85M in performance bonuses for a total of 3.775M.

with the caveat that bonuses only count against the cap if they are paid out, which is fairly unlikely for the complete B package (things like NHL MVP, etc.)

How is that for perfect timing! An article from the Star putting Lou on the hot seat. Auston then gets signed the very same day!

Maybe they hadn't even sat down for real negotiations yet. Toronto Front Office sees the article and thinks "oh, this is a thing?", and then sends AM's camp the papers for the max deal they intended all along.

If it was max, what was the delay. Obvious. Upper management saw pressure building, especially after Star piece, and told Lou to make the deal.

This could have been signed two weeks ago. There is nothing to negotiate. Clearly Leafs tried to chisel him down,.

If they were going to give him max bonuses, why didn't they just sign him right away? Stupid move by Lou who is an outdated GM in my opinion. They have already hurt their relationship with Matthews for no good reason.
