He'll make as much as he can in Toronto and then head home to Arizona. After all, he's a good ole Arizona boy.

What took so long? He clearly doesn't want to be there. I wonder how long it'll take before there's a trade demand.

Probably not at all, since he knew Matthews would get the max, and McGran's story was completely fabricated.

Out of the last 10 1OA picks, this is the 5th latest signing date. Everything about this process was ordinary. This was a complete non-story.

Any link to how you know this? Or is it just a gut feeling?

If that were the case it would have done much faster. An ELC is the simplest contract a GM can do because players can't ask for the moon.

Why did Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, Nail Yakupov and Patrick Kane sign their respective ELC's mid/late July, just like Matthews?

It really isn't unusual at all. You're looking at something that isn't there.

Leafs haven't signed any other ELC's yet either. If this were truly a battle over dollars you'd have seen guys like Korshov get their ELC and Matthews still un-signed.

We're you also speculating like this when Ekblad was still unsigned going into Septembre? Or Stamkos/Kane getting close to late July?

Let's also remember the Leafs usually have their players sign ELC's in late July and August. This is just par for course.

Don't give into the bull **** media created hysteria.

Lou and Matthews were probably busy catching pokemon, but quickly shelled out this deal during the server downtime last night.

But seriously, as been said multiple times this thread, they have to set the benchmarks for the bonuses etc, it isn't as easy as you think.

Lou caved and now Matthews has too much control, he might as well be a player/GM, how is Babcock supposed to coach this team when Matthews is his boss? Who will Mattthews trade???

What a terrible day to be a Leafs fan :naughty:

When his sources are anonymous NHL execs not involved with the Leafs in any capacity, and words like "believe" are used far too often...

When it's been shown that Lou with the Leafs is not averse to giving bonuses...

When the Leafs are known for signing rookies/prospects to ELC's between late-July and August...

When it isn't unusual for 1st overall picks to go into late July without a contract...

Then yeah, that's enough to say any "story" claiming there was a rift between Matthews/Lou/Leafs is fabricated.

Or we could use words and terms like made up, bull ****, lies, etc.

Basically, anyone claiming there was some sort of problem doesn't have a leg to stand on, but by all means, continue to ******* each other with the idea that there is trouble in Leafs land.

The warning signs might have been there when the article was full of phrases like "apparently", "it is believed", "he could", "is thought to" ... not to mention factual errors regarding the CBA.

Then again, HFers have never been known for their reading comprehension.

Pick your reasoning here:

  • Lou buckled because he's too stubborn
  • Matthews will never want to re-sign with the Leafs after this HUGE delay
  • Sign and trade
  • Lou is an outdated GM and needs to go
  • The only reason this got done is because upper management stepped in and took over
  • Toronto media is 100% right and got the rumour right as usual
