Oh, I like the move. I was legit asking if theres another player who's that good defensively, as far as metrics go, and provides almost zero offense. I don't ask much from 4th liners, just that they can PK and defend, which he does.

Nash is a very solid depth piece to add for the playoffs, and this move allows us the cap flexibility to still add the equivalent in player salary before the trade deadline.

I am not a cap expert by any means... but here is my rudimentary understanding...

The Leafs had something like $1m in "full-season space" with Barabanov and Liljegren on the roster.

If Freddy goes on LTIR (before this Nash deal), the Leafs can exceed the cap by $4m while Freddy is out (i.e. to replace him). You demote / Taxi-squad barabanov & liljegren, bring in Nash which puts you right up against the cap. Both go on LTIR, and you can exceed the cap by their combined salaries while they're out??

You're missing the point. If Andersen is staying on LTIR (he isn't) or being traded, then we don't need CBJ to retain anything on Foligno. If Andersen is coming off LTIR during regular season (he is), then we can't fit Foligno in the cap at half retention.
