Confirmed with Link: [TOR/CBJ] TOR acquire Riley Nash for Conditional. 7th Pick in 2022

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Unless, I'm missing something I don't agree. I mean, he may not be done for the season, but retroactive LTIR doesn't seem like any kind of indicator they expect him back soon. If you're putting him on LTIR, you'd set it back to as far back as you can to get maximum benefit, not just because of mandatory time frame.

Theres no maximum benefit. Ltir relief doesnt accrue or anything like that. The only benefit of retro ltir is so that you can activate the player sooner.

I think we have roughly $1.5m in AAV we can add. Capfriendly’s calculations are out of whack right now until they confirm exactly where Leafs got their ACSL. A reporter tweeted that Leafs were at around $1.5m in space before the trade so we should still be around there.
I believe we can only add a 1.05 million cap hit to the current roster without removing anyone and running a 21 man roster.

The max cap relief we could get by waiving someone is by waiving Galchenyuk, which would bump it up to 2.1 million available on a 20 man roster.

Obviously if money goes back in the trade or if Andersen is going to LTIR until the end of season that changes things.

What is the penalty for going over the cap limit ?
Basically the amount of money your under the cap ceiling (and over too I think) when players are put on LTIR is subtracted from the players cap hit when calculating the cap relief

That is why the leafs wanted Clarkson last year as he got them very close to the cap ceiling when they put him and another player (forgot who) on LTIR. Means you get the most cap relief possible

Sounds like the exact guy you want on your team for playoffs. More leadership added to Simmonds, Thornton, Spezza.

OK, this is ridiculous. I'm 7 years older than O'Neill and in 10 times better shape than him and he was a pro athlete. How could he have fallen off that fast? Seems like a really good guy and someone I'd love to hang out with so it feels slimy saying this but...damn.

If you had $10 million in the bank and could LIVE THE LIFE it might just affect your fitness too.

Someone here hit the nail on the head. I was asked to say nothing on the subject. Yes, Fred, could be done, till the playoffs. Dubas takes criticism around here, and I have never spoken to the guy.

But Shanny is not dumb at all, he is sticking with this young man.

I think he is pretty brilliant.

I am still pinching myself when I see Campbell, Muzzin, Brodie and Muzzin playing for us.

What did we give up? I don't want to insult the talent and assets going the other way.

This young man, probably thinks this job 20 hours a day.

Its showing. Jason Spezza? U think he likes Keefe and Dubas. He is playing like a 3.5 million dollar player.

Spezza and Muzzin love the city, the crest, their teammates. But both these guys are irreplaceable type guys.

Spezza has the best slap shot in a Leaf uniform since Rick Vaive, and commands the dot.

Hyman, is the best I have ever seen at what he does, its like he has almost invented a myriad of talents.

Bob Gainey was called the best hockey player, in the world, by Anatoli Tarasov, the architect of Soviet hockey.

Hyman, has gone past Gainey.

I posit, that Hyman is twice the hockey player, in terms of NHL effectiveness than Nylander, and I appreciate William's zone exits and zone entries.

Nice problem to have, but what does this guy sign for? Hyman?

He does something that teammates just love.

He goes into the offensive zone and by all means, and by all costs, he doesn't let the opposition, bring it out.

I almost feel sorry for our opponents, when Zach is out there. No arrogance, total humility, but he just breaks the back of opponents. Its clinical what he does.

I keep expecting opponents to figure out a way to defend, his defence. But like myself, I don't think they have ever seen anything like this guy.

A great goalie and a great forward who lets everyone rest and not have to chase the breakouts?

Those two guys are worth their weight in bitcoins.

We have two right now.

Campbell and Hyman.

Life gives some interesting parallels. Look at the 1967, Leaf Cup team. Look at this team.

Notice any patterns? I think Dubas has.

Thornton, Spezza, Simmonds? Supposedly, past it? Keefe and Dubas, have these guys thinking age is just a number.

That was a brilliant post. please do Galchenyuk

Not really, he's on LTIR, doesn't count towards the cap. We can add other players, post-season starts we can activate Nash and basically we have a roster that's above the cap limit. Similar to what Chicago did with Kane or Tampa Bay.

This won't be Dubas' last move, I like it. He's a good 3c, good PKer, I hated him in Boston which is probably a good thing now that he plays here.

That dude is either a Jets fan or a huge Laine fan. I remember him from the matty-laine debates in 2017

He isn't a leaf fan.

Downside to this deal is almost 0. Only way it flops is if Nash comes into the playoffs at favour of a better player(wont happen with keefe being a good coach) or if in the very unlikely chance Nash disrupts lockeroom chemistry somehow and is a toxic personality on/off the ice. No way of confirming this and he has had no issues in the past so doubt he messes things here, especially with his reputation being the exact opposite

Having nash will help quite a bit allowing engvall/kerfoot/spezza to PK less which should keep them fresher.

You only get cap relief for the days that the player is on the ltir, yes. But it’s not like money that is being put into your bank account each day they are on ltir that you can use later. It’s more like a debt that is forgiven each day.

So with Andersen on LTIR, each day we can be forgiven for $5m worth of AAV that we are exceeding the cap. But when he comes off, we just don’t get the daily credit anymore.

now I understand the appeal of having an island called Robidas

Spezza isn’t slotting behind Nash.
(injury backups)

In a fully healthy playoff lineup Nash would be the #4 and Spezza on the wing. Should one of the top three get injured Nash would move up, and Spezza would take the #4 spot.

Spezza cant physically play more than fourth line minutes for any extended period of time. Otherwise he would be. Nash can play third line minutes but his lack of offence doesn't make him the ideal #3 choice but will suffice long term if needed.

They probably want a 2nd+ for Foligno.
Other teams know the Leafs are very close to being a fav for the Cup and will make the Leafs pay.

its a buyers market, they aren’t going to force the leafs hand. Teams will take what they can to recoup assets. At this point it feels like it’s either Hoffman or Hall. Outside chance of Foligno, I can’t see CBJ moving on from their captain.

Father time is a bastard. The difference between 33 years old Bozak and 35 years old Bozak has been fairly considerable.
The original discussion was about Toronto's first game 7 loss to the Bruins, where other centers really blew the lead they had. There's a reason Bozak is the #1 center for penalty-killing ice-time for the Leafs.

My sentiment, seems to be pretty much in sync with all of us on this board. Yes, we love talented hockey players. But all of us, have grinded and suffered being Leaf fans.

It sure hasn't been easy to be a Leaf fan. But it seems to get into your dna far easier than any virus.

Many of us were doubtful about Dubas landing Alex. I am such a Leaf fan, I was hopeful. But far from sure.

Everything I had ever heard about Gally, was that he was talented but not hard working.

Well, I don't know what happened to him, heck, Muzzin called him out for being the hardest working guy in practise.

Dubas, is rapidly gaining traction, as a genius. Player management, is huge.

Listening to Darryl Sittler today, in the Tilley interview, he commented on the best coach, he had ever played for. Roger Nielsen. Said that he treated players like men. Brought out the best of them. Didn't coach by fear or intimidation.

I haven't studied Alex's career, closely at all. But, obviously, he likes the Leaf Nation vibe and some or most of the management.

Everything starts at the top. Shanahan, Dubas, Keefe.... Still young, driven, hungry, and they treat their athletes like men, not boys.

Its not talked about much at all. But look at Keefe's win loss record since joining the Leafs. Pretty impressive.,

Alex, was a top three draft pick in the first round. Seems to have top six hands, really committed on board battles and everyone who said he couldn't skate all that well. I personally have been pleased and impressed.

Another steal, seems to me. I am big time in his corner, very likeable player.

If you're putting him on LTIR, you'd set it back to as far back as you can to get maximum benefit, not just because of mandatory time frame.

I would be surprised if Freddie comes back before the season ends. The retroactive part of putting him on LTIR could simply be a false flag. Dubas would lose any leverage he had if other GM’s knew for sure he was gone for the season. Now they may think it, but they wont know for sure - which may allow him to get a backup at a slightly better price.

Every single LTIR is retroactive to the date of the injury. The only importance of the retroactive date is to establish when the player will become eligible to return after missing at least 24 days and 10 NHL games, as required for LTIR. If Andersen's injury occurred in his most recently played game on March 19th he'll be eligible to be activated from LTIR on April 13th.

The retroactive LTIR starting date has no impact on cap relief or predictions on how soon a player might be healthy to play again.

Why is he calling me?': Blue Jackets' Riley Nash surprised by trade to Maple Leafs - The Athletic

COLUMBUS, Ohio — It turns out the Blue Jackets were able to trade injured center Riley Nash after all.

Nash was traded to Toronto on Friday for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. If he plays 25 percent of the Maple Leafs’ postseason games, the Blue Jackets will get a sixth-round pick instead.

That’s not exactly a blockbuster. But when Nash suffered a sprained left knee last week in a loss to Florida, the Blue Jackets and Nash thought he’d be off the market ahead of Monday’s trade deadline.

He was surprised when Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen phoned him Friday.

“Yeah, it was, ‘Why is he calling me?’ It wasn’t really resonating,” said Nash, who is expected to be sidelined another three to five weeks. “I was caught a little off-guard, just enjoying a casual Friday."

“I definitely wasn’t expecting it today, for sure, with a couple of days to go (before the deadline). I feel like the eyes have been on the other guys, but this is definitely exciting and a great opportunity.”

The Blue Jackets will save roughly $650,000 by trading Nash. As for Toronto, The Athletic’s James Mirtle does an outstanding job here explaining how the Maple Leafs can use Nash’s contract to expand their available salary-cap space by playing him on the long-term injured reserve list.

Nash expects to be healthy by the start of the playoffs next month, and he’s familiar with the club he’s joining. The Blue Jackets knocked Toronto out of the qualifying round last year.

“You follow teams around the league, and they’ve been having a really strong year,” Nash said. “We played them last year, so that was a chance to see what they’re all about. They were knocking on the door last year."

“I’m excited to add whatever they need, and go on, hopefully, a long playoff run. An opportunity like this doesn’t come around very often. This should be fun.”

When Nash is healthy, the Leafs are expected to use him as a fourth-line checker.

There is no downside to this, they get a player for the playoff run, they get extra cap space for a 7th round pick that MIGHT be a 6th, maybe Columbus finds a gem with that pick but unlikely and even if they do, if the Leafs get the cup who cares.

OK, this is ridiculous. I'm 7 years older than O'Neill and in 10 times better shape than him and he was a pro athlete. How could he have fallen off that fast? He was still in the league 15 years ago, I've never been in more than a beer league and I'd be comfortable going head to head against him on the ice right now. WTF? Seems like a really good guy and someone I'd love to hang out with so it feels slimy saying this but...damn.

Some guys have to do everything perfectly to be in NHL shape and the moment they stop, they balloon.
