This is a f***ing great move. Who cares where he goes??? I hate Vegas but getting out from the Hertl contract as well as 2 firsts and 2 thirds, with only retaining 1.6 mil.. How can you fault MG for making the move that 60% of us wanted him to make. Cant wait to see what @Hodge has to say about this. I know hes gonna like it.
We gave up 2 3rds….didnt receive.

Hertl + 2 3rds + Retention for a very late first and a 3C upside prospect.

Holy shit. Grier got bent over. That’s horrible.
No he didn't. The return is a clear indication that the market views Hertl signed at 8.1M for 6 more years after this one as a negative value contract. And it's really hard to argue against that.

The return we're receiving is for the retention, just like the 1st round pick we received for Karlsson was for taking back bad contracts.

TSN is reporting that the trade was somewhat mistaken. The Sharks are trading the two thirds, not getting them.

It's Hertl, 3rd, 3rd, for Edstrom, 1st.

That's.... far less good.

That makes me feel worse. So it’s retaining salary, losing draft picks and a popular player is going to Vegas of all teams.

This might get me on the fire Mike Grier bandwagon. Like I said if this team ever gets good again, they might either be long gone from San Jose or no one will care.

I don't agree with the objection to the trade being that we have now used three retention slots, I would rather use the retention in the important trades to get more assets instead of using it to get an extra 5th as a 3rd party broker.

Wait, we GAVE up the two thirds?

Man, Mike, I've been a devout supporter of you through some questionable decisions, but honestly you clearly don't have any sort of emotional understanding of the game.

So retention, our best forward, two 3rd round picks for a late first and a literally who

At this point Grier may as well drop the act and wear his golden tie and vegas pin in public

He’s built our prospect pool back up from the absolute dumpster fire DW left it in. The trades he’s made to dump horrendous contracts has helped build the future. Part of rebuilding is accepting it and being terrible for a few years so yes, I do believe it’ll be fruits of Mike Griers labours
In theory those things are great, but first prospects will have to turn out, and second he would need to sign and trade for players with good deals and not get ripped off.

I think hes doing mostly the right things, but his value evaluations are wildly unpredictable and I dont see that panning well for a team that isnt just trying to lose.

I went from a 100% supporter of Mike to 100% loathing.

Yes he did. No retention slots for how long?. Two of our 3rds, which will be at the top, for a singular late first and a middling prospect?

There was zero reason to make that trade unless Hertl specifically asked for it. The cap space isn’t a big deal. Losing a fan favorite and good locker room “veteran” for chump change is stupid.

My head says that 3rd round picks have only like a 10-15% chance of being an NHLer so it's not that big of a deal.

My heart says that it looks awful and sends the wrong message about how much Grier thought he had to grease the wheels to take a good player unless the Sharks are somehow super spooked that his knee is never going to be the same.

I’m sure Hertl wanted to get traded and didn’t want to go too far away, which is why it’s Vegas. Mike did him a favor very likely.
