I dont think this is a brutal deal but to me its a no brainer this team should get a new GM in a few years when its actually trying to play
Based on what brain buster logic? Grier has acquired 4 1st rounders in 20 months and cleared almost $30M per year in cap hits. We quite literally have a blank canvas now for him to build the team his way rather than be saddled with DW and Joe Will’s contractual issues for another 4-6 years.

That's just fantastic work by GMMG undoing the final massive mistake of the Wilson era.

Hertl is not worth his cap hit at 30 years old. Imagine how awful and unmoveable that contract was going to look at 33, 34, 35.

Grier got us out from under the albatross before it was too late, with minimal retention, AND ended up with a solid Bystedt-level prospect and an unprotected 1st.

Not to mention this trade guarantees us pole position in the race to finish 32nd not just this season but for the foreseeable future. This was what was necessary. This was what was prolonged by the idiotic decision to extend Hertl.

The fruits wont be from his labour, but simply because we are terrible.

I dont think he will ever be the guy to build a good team when his trades are awful.
He’s built our prospect pool back up from the absolute dumpster fire DW left it in. The trades he’s made to dump horrendous contracts has helped build the future. Part of rebuilding is accepting it and being terrible for a few years so yes, I do believe it’ll be fruits of Mike Griers labours

That's not a good return for a 1st line center under contract
What part of he’s 30 years old and signed for 6 years makes the dummies in this fanbase think he should fetch more? Same brainiacs thought the Meier deal was garbage and the Karlsson deal was a fleecing in SJ’s favor over Ottawa.

This is a f***ing great move. Who cares where he goes??? I hate Vegas but getting out from the Hertl contract as well as 2 firsts and 2 thirds, with only retaining 1.6 mil.. How can you fault MG for making the move that 60% of us wanted him to make. Cant wait to see what @Hodge has to say about this. I know hes gonna like it.

Sharks can't eat salary on a potential trade of Couture next year because they're already using all 3 retention spots.
Given Couture's injury status, he probably won't be wanted via trade until Burns' retention expires after next season. Couture is teetering on the edge of his career being over.

TSN is reporting that the trade was somewhat mistaken. The Sharks are trading the two thirds, not getting them.

It's Hertl, 3rd, 3rd, for Edstrom, 1st.

That's.... far less good.
ouch. I thought we were getting a haul.. This is less good, but still helps the team going forward.
