Tom Wilson, 20 goals and counting

Congrats to Tom Wilson. Now he's in the same company as his former team mate and current Oiler great Alex Chiasson.

Haters will always have another excuse lined up in any Tom Wilson thread. He absolutely was a shit head before but has taken gigantic steps from his Oates era role compared to now. Those who don’t see that and see some stupid goon are ignorant and don’t want to admit they were wrong. I applaud those who actually admitted they were wrong and I totally get why people hate the guy.

I'm a huge Wilson fan and defend him all the time, but come on... Teravainen or Hertl are a much better choice.

You're talking about two ~ppg players or a 55pt (pace) player. Hitting is not THAT important anymore.
Weak hitting isn't much important. Big ones change the game and screw up opponent's game plan execution by playing "hot potato" or by trying to respond.

Really? Legendary enforcer Joe Thornton?? And he survived?
So what is it?

Is it that he doesn't fight other enforcers? Or he doesn't fight guys bigger than him?

Because when you list off all the enforcers he's fought it's a decent list (I mean as decent as it can be since that's an extinct role in 2019)... but of course when you do that people whine about him only taking fights when he wants, so then you list off all the bigger guys he's fought and it becomes "well those guys aren't enforcers"

Also are we sitting here and acting like Joe Thornton is not regarded as one of the top guys you don't want to fight in the NHL?

Chara doesn't fight a lot either, doesn't exactly make him someone people are giddy to fight.

If you asked every GM in the league I can almost guarantee they'd take Tom Wilson over Hertl. Just telling you.
I don't know if they'd take him over Hertl, but the NHL Programs on Sirius XM have had this discussion a lot and basically the guys there have said that from what they've heard every GM in the league is now looking for the next Tom Wilson, there's just one problem, he's not a common player.

Here's the thing from my perspective. Tom Wilson is a unique player, a guy like him is not available in every draft, so that makes his value skewed. A guy like Hertl will have better stats, but a guy like Hertl is available in the first round of every single draft. So while I get the idea that Hertl has more head to head value, a guy like Wilson is more rare, and in that sense I do think more GMs would choose him if those two were available.

Do you listen to NHL podcasts with GM's and ex GM's on them? Please tell me how much Tomas Hertl comes up and how other teams want a player like that versus how much Tom Wilson comes up in conversations. It's all there if you want to see for yourself.

I find that rather anecdotal/selective- if I talk I might mention how much I'd like to have a player in the mold of Wilson just because he's a rare breed. It'll come up, it's a talking point. But that doesn't mean he's the better player. Mentioning wanting Matthews won't be as much of a talking point- dude scores goals, of course you'd want him. It's obvious, assumed, a given- Wilson will, by nature, be mentioned more by GMs.

This is objectively incorrect and you'll see it once more in the playoffs this year.
Oh I have no doubt he will make a few hits... but unless he can take people out of the game - which he can't do because if he does it again the NHL is going to make him sit a long long time.... then he's a 20-25 goal power winger... which is nice.. but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

What made Tom Wilson different, is he could end someone's night at any moment, albeit he did it often times on the edge of the rules, which the NHL finally acknowledged. Now that he can't live on that edge... he's a power forward on a top line with 20-25 goals. Not bad... but not someone I'm taking over a guy whose potted 35-40.

You know what else helps change the game? Contributing to goals. Im going to go ahead and say the extra 20-30pts Hertl/TT helps produce happen more than massive game changing hits that Wilson delivers on rare occasions.

Just so you know listening to podcasts gives you zero insight on how players are actually valued by NHL organizations.

No need to make it often. One huge hit and your Hertl doesn't try to deke through the players anymore for whole series.
Besides, it's pretty obvious you will face better offensive line sometimes on the road where opponent decides matchups. What you're going to do? Trying to outscore a better line? Good luck!
