Tom Wilson, 20 goals and counting

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

The Sundqvist and Aston Reese hits were 100% unnecessary and he could have eased up and easily not been suspended.

He only needs to look at his team mate Oshie who is a truck and rarely if ever throws a hit that isn’t intended to knock people out.

I honestly don't think the Aston Reese hit was that bad -- the result was a shame but I think he was trying to go shoulder to shoulder and missed -- but the Sundqvist hit was supremely dumb and unnecessary. No need for hits like that (or the one Reaves threw on Wilson) in today's game.

Not sure if anyone saw the Caps/Panthers game this week but Wilson could have absolutely killed Dadonov. Moving left to right on the TV Dadonov cut across the ice right inside the offensive blueline and Wilson was coming on the ice off of a change from the visitor's bench so he got to Dadonov in about 6 strides. Don't think Dadonov saw him and he had him lined up dead to rights but just kind of flew by him. I think learning has occurred.

What about Ovi's Cup? The league loves a compelling playoff storyline. It always has. And the aging superstar captain chasing his first Cup is their absolute favorite storyline, bar none. They've recycled it countless times over the years. People love it. It never gets old.

I'm simply suggesting that Wilson should have been suspended for most of the playoffs last year and likely would have been under different circumstances...

There is no precedent for that.

Wilson's suspensions were equal or greater to the most severe suspensions in league history if you look at how quickly they ramped up.

Three headshots before he even reached the ECF. You're right. I don't think there is a precedent for that. Wilson should have been done for the year.

I'm simply suggesting that Wilson should have been suspended for most of the playoffs last year and likely would have been under different circumstances, but that his "controversial" hits heightened the drama around Ovi's Cup Quest, and probably provided some kind of additional, measurable ratings-related benefit with an untapped or underperforming demographic, which is why the league held off on punishing Wilson at the time, but made sure to punish him as severely as they did when they finally did.

That's not delusional, that's business. That's not even that outlandish an idea, and I'd wager that someone in Toronto would probably even cop to it if asked about it over a drink or two off the record. Even so, that scenario is still a far cry from suggesting that the league engineered Ovi's Cup and fixed the result, which isn't what I was actually suggesting. You just jumped to that conclusion.

And why would I be bitter about the Caps winning the Cup? It only happened last year year and it's not unlikely like we'll get a chance at revenge.
We shouldn’t even play the playoffs this year. Clearly going to be a Toronto/San Jose matchup. Two super old stars in Marleau and Thornton would be the epic storyline in a 7 game series. That’s how this works right?

Yeah I’d still defend Wilson over the Aston-Reese hit. If another jersey makes that same hit or if ZAR has a stronger jaw that hit is on highlight reels. Understand him not getting the benefit of the doubt and Pitt fans being angry though. I’d complain too if my guy got blown the f*** up regardless of legality.

He’s had a lot of borderline hits and some bad ones. The Blues hit that gave him the long suspension was bad and not defensible. But that ZAR hit was not one of them.

I think it is because while the rest of the league is trending down with needing discipline he flagged as heavily trending the other direction.

I dunno.

I think I’d take Anderson at this point just given his improvements this year. He’s on an upward swing where I think Wilson is plateauing with a great year.

I also think Anderson creates a lot for himself versus Wilson typically playing with two top ten Cs in the league.
Anderson has a significant up tick in numbers and he is on an upward swing. Wilson has a significant up tick in numbers and he is plateauing. Nevermind that this year is backing up his playoff performance from last year.

You seriously don't think Wilson creating some extra room for those 2 centers isn't creating opportunities for himself and the rest of the players on the ice?

The league trending down as a whole? No…

Then you should be ecstatic as the Bolts have their "aging superstar captain chasing his first Cup".

Congratulations!

We'll definitely hear about it, but those guys (Stammer too) don't have the same name recognition with the kind of casual or new fan the NHL is hoping will stay interested. Again, nowhere did I say that the league was fixing outcomes. The league doesn't do that. That's O'Halaran's job ;).

It'll definitely be a thing if we get far enough, but Stammer doesn't have as much name recognition as Ovi among the kind of new or casual fan the NHL is looking to attract. Again, I'm not saying the league predetermines outcomes, but ratings will always influence decisions that get made in Toronto.

Nah it was entertaining and something to talk about. Just wanted to point out the irony of your post lol.
It was fan banter. A Caps fan essentially implied that we were going to fall short against them again this year. I responded by telling him to enjoy the Cup he's won, singular, the inherent implication being that they would lose to us this year. Follow? If both teams have one Cup (singular), then only one of them stands to win a second Cup (thereby plural) at the end of this year, because only one team wins the Cup in a given year, right? And as I'm a fan of Tampa, I naturally think that that team will be Tampa, right? I mean, maybe I was trying to be be too clever or witty, but you should at least allow for the possibility that some posts are legitimately lighthearted.

Lol. Well, I if I need to I can probably throw a quick spreadsheet together. I feel like the initial post was pretty solid, and I'm happy to take a little time to walk people through it.

Connor McDavid and Paul Byron being suspended in the same season for head shots and the “rest of the league is trending down with needing discipline.”
You even watch the NHL, bro?
