Tom Wilson, 20 goals and counting

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Meh. He's playing with better linemates and getting good passes in prime scoring areas.

This isn't a fluke, if that is what you are insinuating.

He has a better shooting percentage than Alex Ovechkin this season.

Is he a more gifted goal-scorer than Alex Ovechkin?

Other players with lower shooting percentages than Wilson this season:

Sidney Crosby
Steven Stamkos
Auston Matthews
Connor McDavid
John Tavares
Nikita Kucherov

I could go on.

There are plenty of players with a higher career shooting % than Ovechkin. Are these players better than Ovechkin?

Wilson is not a fluke. Get used to it. ;)

It's a fluke. They happen.

Willian Karlsson scored 43 goals last season after all. All 43 of them still count, even if everybody knew it would probably never happen again.

But you're free to enjoy it while it's going.

We'll see next year.

Wilson has steadily improved year by year and has a great work ethic.

Feel free to doubt. :)

Good job! You have to think that 20 years ago he might have just been another goon ala Parros, Laraque, etc.

What a stud, now tied for 82nd in goal scoring with 9 other players.

Still has way to long of a record of throwing bad hits and showing no respect for other players on the ice.

His career average is 9.5%, and that's taking this season into account.

Without this season included, his career average is 7.16%.
Meh. Wilsons 1st 2 seasons he was used as an enforcer and wasn't NHL ready (He was ready physically but not skill wise). His 1st 2 years he had a combined 7 goals with a shooting % around 5 both years.

He's raised his shooting % every season since. Beginning last season he started playing in the top 6 his shooting % had been over 11 since. He's clearly a different player than earlier in his career and I expect him to be at this level or better through his prime. He is after all a true power forward and took a few years to develop offensively. The scary thing is he still has some unrealized potential.

Yep. Good analysis. :)

There's pretty much no chance he repeats his shooting percentage. That doesn't mean he hasn't improved, but he'll probably be closer to a 20+ goal pace instead of a 30+ goal pace going forward, unless he improves more.

No hate. Just the truth. Prior to the past two seasons he was a bottom six goon who was a liability on the ice. That isn’t entirely the case anymore.
Getting real tired explaining to people how a power forward works.

Long story short:
He was instrumental in the Cup run and success of last season because by their own admission he opens up the ice for guys like Kuznetsov and Ovechkin. If you're a player who requires space to be successful (Ovechkin/Kuznetsov/etc) a guy like Wilson is irreplaceable. When he's on the ice he's clearing out openings for them to work with.

Just because he's now receiving a point windfall doesn't mean he's only now proving his worth.

Fully get that. But prior to last season what did Wilson bring on a regular basis other than questionable hits and dangerous play?

He's Matt Cooke... whoopee

Faux tough guy

Picks on the smallest opponent and only fights when he gets the jump on an equal.
There are so many fallacies here.

Matt Cooke's career high was 42 points in 82 games. Tom Wilson is 7 points away from that and he's played 31 less games.

He's fought guys like Joe Thornton, take a look at his hockey fight db and you'll see him give up height and lbs quite a few times.

Lastly, and this drives me crazy, is no one here aware of the idea of smart fights vs. bad fights? This has been the turning point of Tom Wilson's career. It seems like there is a breed of fans here who think that if you turn down a fight you're scared or a coward, they have absolutely zero sense for the strategy involved. I mean honestly, I've seen people call him a coward for not fighting while his team is holding on to a thin lead in a game. I've seen them call him a coward for drawing a penalty because he wouldn't fight and then the Capitals scoring on the resulting poweplay. It's like people have no idea how smart fighters and teams use fighting to change the momentum or draw out dumb penalties.

In addition to being much better that Matt Cooke, Tom Wilson also was a in the top 10 in penalties drawn for the 3 previous seasons. He knows it's a game of strategy, and it's a game of getting your opponent to be less disciplined.

It's not going to be something you see on the score sheet, but if you were to go and watch the Islanders series in 2015 you'd see that he was one of the biggest agents of change. His physical play essentially made the Islanders throw an entire game of the series because they spent the next game after the Visnovsky hit chasing him.

It's rather recent that he's been able to put the physical play, the baiting teams into getting off of their game, and the offensive production together, but those first two skills have been around for a bit.

Really? Legendary enforcer Joe Thornton?? And he survived?
