Confirmed with Link: TJ Brodie to TOR | 4 years 5M per

No, never. Pietro was never coming here, only the uninformed in our fan base thought so. Of course his agent is going to float that his client is considering the richest franchise in hockey, its a negotiating tactic. Every big ticket UFA is coming here, yet so few actually do. If Dubie for a second thought Pietro was a legit option he would have put a pause on Brodie. Clearly he figured out he was getting played so he went for his next best option.

I give credit for Dubas doing something prudent.

I think his asking price was too much. Blues signed Krug for 6.5m instead makes no sense if Petro was asking low 8s IMO.

Man I wanted Petro to be a Leaf so bad, ah well.

Maybe Petro didn't want to be a Leaf as badly as many Leafs fan wanted him to be a Leaf?

As for Brodie, I'm liking this contract and the number of years. Thought it would take 5.5-6 million to get him so 5 million a year sounds pretty decent. Dubas finally got his guy and lets hope he can play much better defense than Barrie.

Wonderful pick up, watching high light reels he handles the puck, skates, beautiful out let passes and has a solid slap shot from the point that he loves to use, something that our current D core barely use other than Muzzy. Oh and he literally absolutely flattened a few players in his own zone so he is capable.

.... guess this sort of makes up for the Barrie-Kadri deal. We end up getting the better center, Kerfoot over Jankowski.....and still end up with Brodie. Ends up being the best deal (minus the lost year with barrie over Brodie)
Or we could have kept Kadri, and then just signed Brodie. Much better than Kerfoot and Brodie.

This signing does NOT make up for the disastrous Kadri trade.

Anybody on board with dealing Marner and signing Piet as well?

Rielly - Piet
Muzzin - Brodie

Best top 4 in the league. We would also get some cap off the books as Piet will surely be signed for less than what Marner is making.

I like to move. The best partner Rielly will have ever had.

I imagine this takes us out of the running for that Weegar trade. We'd lose one of them via expansion next year if we brought him in too.

Hindsight. Kadri has been useless for us in the playoffs. Barrie was a point machine and a top pairing in Colorado for years. It was a good trade for both teams at the time. Obviously it worked out better for Colorado in the end. It happens; move on.

Don’t really see this as a move that will put us in the cup conversation. Not that big of an improvement.

I live out west. My Flames friends are saying nothing but AMAZING things about this guy. Great at retrieving pucks, great exiting the zones. Hard on the puck. Smooth skater. Only negative is he can't shoot.

He is basically the polar opposite of Tyson Barrie.

I am super psyched for him and think he is a great partner for Mo.
I agree fully other than the reels that I saw him in he shoots the puck with authority from the point with a slap shot and also walks in from the point with an accurate top shelf scoring wrist shot.
Just what I witnessed anyhow.

Yup. Can't have players that try too hard in the playoffs. The people bashing Kadri for caring too much need to give their head a shake.

There is a line between "caring too much" and "selfish". Kadri was often on the right side of that line but regularly wandered into the selfish category. I like Kadri and still do, he is a great player and can be fantastic but that inability to control himself makes him a liability. He did the same type of things in these playoffs with Dallas getting multiple power plays hurting his team when things weren't going his way. It's childish and not an attitude anyone will want around their team long-term.

After doing more research, I think I actually really like this signing.

I still think he’s a (much) better fit beside Muzzin, and I’m hoping there’s a trade in the works for someone to play beside Rielly, but Brodie’s just a really good defenseman; he makes the team significantly better.

For anyone concerned about Brodie away from Giordano, his underlying and advanced stats were essentially identical when he was with Andersson, Hanifin, etc.

His numbers tanked with Hamonic, the only time he was the LHD, and well, Hamonic tanked everyone’s numbers lol

Same here man. I know Brodie very well. He's actually a great defensemen with some very positive aspects to his game, but he doesn't address where our D is weak. It's ridiculous if we don't find a proper partner for Rielly by now.
He is a great addition for Muzz, I agree we need a Weegar or Savard type for Morgan and then we are good I think

A smart team would play Florida against Vegas and try to get either McNabb or Weegar for a really cheap price.

Good signing. But why did we trade Kadri for Barrie? Still stings, wish that never happened.

It sucks and I am a HUGE kadri fan, but he got suspended two years in a row during the playoffs. Most teams would have moved on from him at that point and I just wish the trade had worked out better for us.

He would very likely have still been here if he didnt get suspended in 1 of those 2 playoff series.

Glad he has been doing well in Colorado. We all knew he would succeed there.

Agreed. He's a better fit beside Muzzin for sure.

Pretty sure he played LD with stone this year more than he was with Harmonic
