Brodie isn't the "Big bruiser" that many fans have clamoured for, but I do think he is a really solid fit.
The Leafs are a team, just based on what they have up front, who's success is going to be driven by a relentless attack. They need to get better on the forecheck, without a doubt, but having another excellent puckmoving defenceman is really a solid fit for them. I know I'll take heat for this comment, but he and Alex Pietrangelo are very similar style defenceman. AP may be big, but he doesn't hit.
As for the contract, this year, it's not going to really matter whether it was $5m, $4.5m, or $4m for Brodie, one of Johnsson/Kerfoot are going to have to move regardless. What doesn't necessarily make sense to me is that Brodie is an excellent skating dman... why not sign him to a 5th year and knock a little off the AAV?
Because in 4 yrs a certain someone needs a new contract and perhaps they want the flexibility? I dunno but just a guess
