Confirmed with Link: TJ Brodie to TOR | 4 years 5M per

Brodie isn't the "Big bruiser" that many fans have clamoured for, but I do think he is a really solid fit.

The Leafs are a team, just based on what they have up front, who's success is going to be driven by a relentless attack. They need to get better on the forecheck, without a doubt, but having another excellent puckmoving defenceman is really a solid fit for them. I know I'll take heat for this comment, but he and Alex Pietrangelo are very similar style defenceman. AP may be big, but he doesn't hit.

As for the contract, this year, it's not going to really matter whether it was $5m, $4.5m, or $4m for Brodie, one of Johnsson/Kerfoot are going to have to move regardless. What doesn't necessarily make sense to me is that Brodie is an excellent skating dman... why not sign him to a 5th year and knock a little off the AAV?

Because in 4 yrs a certain someone needs a new contract and perhaps they want the flexibility? I dunno but just a guess

No one is talking about Sandin..........he has terrific hockey sense and if he is stronger this year as he should be, he could be an excellent offensive d man.
As far as trading johnsson....they may have to but they don't have as much talent up front as some people think.
Matthews,Marner. and Nylander.......then a drop off to the slow tavares...and then what?
They aint that great.
Did you really just claim that Nylander is better than Tavares?

He can play PK? I know he’s got a good shot and did well with Giordano. He’s a good defenseman. Just not sure he makes our dcore better than last year
Brodie is a multi-tool. He's been great in cgy for a good long time now, but less heralded because he played with gio. He is a substantial upgrade on our right side and immediately our best pk defenceman. 3/4 defenceman in our top 4 are legit now, things are looking up.

We now have about 3 mil to fill 2 winger positions and 2 defence positions. I think this all but guarantees AJ and/or Kerfoot are gone before Jan 1st, almost $7 mil tied up in those 2. We have to sign Dermott and Mikheyev, (both received qualifying offers).

Dubas seemed to be pretty confident that he was going to make a trade, say we move Kerfoot and AJ, if that Dman from Fla is coming this way we need 3 mil for him, maybe 2 mil for Dermott and another 2 for Mikheyev? Leaving approx 3 mil for one winger., one center and one RW all 4th liners

The one thing Brodie doesnt do well is PK. The analytics show him as a very poor defender on the PK but elite 5 on 5

Nevermind. Read it wrong.

My point stands that he's probably still our best pk guy now, ehhh maybe muzz, but still a tremendous upgrade over the tire fire of ceci

Glad we stayed away from AP deal as it's going to turn into another anchor for whomever he plays for.

Brodie is a good and moves the needle up for our underwhelming defence. I would still like to see a few players who can actually dish out a check once in a while, but I guess we will have to wait and see if a trade is in the works.

Weird how the main board thread is nothing but praise for this move from other fanbases while 50 percent of leaf fans hate it.

Seems like there is a bias against any move the team makes due to certain fans disdain for the GM.
take a look at the other thread about Brodie/Tanev/Harmonic and you'll see some people didn't want him before he signed so why would they change there mind now ?

Another Dman (hopefully Weegar, Savard or Murphy) and another forward are incoming book it

7 D:
Reilly Weegar
Muzzin Brodie
Sandin Lehtonen
???

Traded: Dermott, Holl

Dubas will get this done and improve the D. Lehtonen is the biggest wild card of them all

In a vaccum it looks like a fine signing but Leafs fans are very aware of the weakness of our D and how Dubas burned 5M of cap on a guy who barely addresses it.

(Holtby was signed) but I agree. Weegar, Brodie, Keeping the core together and adding good cheap depth will make this team a legit contender.

I guess that’s what I get for working all day. I have no idea what’s happening league wide.

But yeah, one more quality piece on the blue line, and I’m happy.

How does Brodie barely address our weakness?? He may be left handed, but he plays the right side. He's good defensively (namely shot suppression and positionally), and on the transition. Can chip in offense. He's a well suited partner for Rielly and has several qualities we're lacking in our defensive group. Signed at reasonable cap hit, and some cost certainty with term.

I really like this signing and it I think he'd be solid for the Leafs. Just wondering if Dubas has another trade in works to open some cap space?

Potentially yes but not in practice.
He has the talent but not the drive..
Tavares is getting slower and in my opinion while he is still an elite shooter , he is no longer a star....just a good second line player.

Well said.

If Dubas can get someone like Weegar the D will be looking quite juicy.
