Confirmed with Link: TJ Brodie to TOR | 4 years 5M per

I didn't want Brodie either. Just kind of strikes me as odd that this is the second offseason where Toronto was in pursuit of this player, and he's basically a compromise. LHD playing RD. Granted, Babcock isn't here anymore to fuss over it, but I can't help but think Dubas probably could have done okay just building a blueline to Babcock's specifications. Mobile, big wingspan guys who can handle the chaos when the shit hits the fans and clean LHD-RHD pairs. Sprinkle in a guy who can make a reliable stretch pass and that's all you really need.
According to this information Dubas was "Not very close" to signing Pietrangelo. So besides him what other right handed shooting defenseman like Chris Tanev, are available as UFA's, if you specifically want a right handed shooting defenseman?

Not really a big fan of Brodie, but the market isn't deep so he's probably the 3rd best guy available.

2nd TBH.

Krug is a 2nd pairing, powerplay specialist. He's never faced top pairing and top competition. He's always been behind Chara.

He's really good, and it's not a big difference, maybe even a 2A/2B situation, but TJ Brodie is a fantastic player at both ends.

It sounds like you're describing a left handed Barrie... Obviously that's an exaggeration, Brodie brings a few factors that Barrie doesn't, I think brings a lot more jam and isn't a defensive blackhole but yeah he's not what I would have envisioned as our primary blueline fix.

He's very good positionally, the epitome of the saying "go to where the puck is going to be, not where it's been". Even with that though, his 185 pound frame is obviously not ideal for the amount of jam he can bring.

Looking at the remaining options, I wonder if this is the moment to start looking at a Josh Manson type trade.

Incredible defensively against top competition, blocks hits, throws hits, only 26, apparently only asking for around 3M

Pretty much what we want to a tee.

For some reason I have hard time believing he'll get only 3M and the Panthers not meeting him at that price.

Either way, I think he's the perfect fit for a lot of reasons. I'm just not sure the Panthers want what we have to give.

Yeah, he's a chippy smaller defenseman. A poor man's Giordano actually.

No that's because of the escrow in the new cba: "Escrow would be capped at 20 percent next season, then between 14 and 18 percent the season after. It would go down to 10 percent in 2022-23 and 6 percent for the remainder of the new labor deal, which would carry through 2025-26 with a provision for a one-year extension, Sportsnet said."

So you backload the contract to lose less to the escrow.
Makes sense, thanks

I don't believe that. He could have done 8M per now if he had the balls to make a big move.
Or it didn't make sense from a financial point? Should he have given guys like Nylander away and then sign Petra?
You don't have to believe it but the logic plays into it.

SCOUTING REPORT
Moves the puck well and is an even better skater--he is fast and agile. Has intriguing offensive ability. Can run the power play and jump up into the rush. Is capable of logging huge amounts of ice time. Could stand to get physically stronger in order to win even more battles at the NHL level, since he is a tad undersized. Also, he has a tendency to occasionally drift and lose concentration when in the game.
Long Range Potential: Excellent, big-minute defenseman.

I dont think you have to give away Nylander. He could go along way to replenishing depth in a couple years.

Leafs have been the only team connected to it, and its by McKenzie and Friedman of all people. Plus, Florida signed Gudas and are apparently still in on Barrie and interesting in Petro.

Brodie is just straight up a better and more logical fit.
Than Pietrangelo? Lool ones a top 10 defender in the league an the others a fringe top 60. Pietrangelo is the leafs 3rd best player most likely after AM and MM. Brodie a good player but he wont provide anywhere near the value peitrangelo would have provided

The only silver lining on Brodie over Pietrangelo (assuming he doesn't sign with Boston) is if Lehtonen lights it up, we can afford to retain him.

So much 'down the chain' benefit in avoiding overpayments to your high-end guys.... :sarcasm: It's so true.

This is a reasonable point. Matchups and responsibilities are often overlooked by fans (which is why #1 are so valuable). They see a guy being turned inside out and say "he's not very good", until they see the guy doing it was named Connor McDavid.

That's quite different than losing a battle to a 160 pound call up in his first NHL game simply because you are lower on the depth chart.

I don't believe that. He could have done 8M per now if he had the balls to make a big move.

I think he would have taken around 8 for STL and TOR because of the grandparents factor. He could easily get 10M per outside these two markets.
