Confirmed with Link: TJ Brodie to TOR | 4 years 5M per

Man this reads like someone who doesn't know who Brodie is. He is a huge boost to this team defensively. He and Muzzin would be a fantastic pair.
Also we are in on Weeger just to calm you down.

That's your opinion, and you are entitled to it. I do know Brodie well, and the points I touched on are also points brought up within this thread. I'm not the first one pointing them out.

Pretty sure I said clearly that I hope we are still pursuing Weegar, so I don't need calming down. I've seen a few of these season's come and go, and every year I hope for the best because I'm a Leafs fan from beginning to end.

Having said that, I can critique my team without being a mindless sheep for everything they do. Barrie was a mistake and I don't see Brodie as a solution either. My opinion, I'm entitled to it, and if you disagree that's your prerogative, but lay off the condescending comments.

Get off your high horse.

Gio is a recent Norris Trophy winner too, and that's not going to be Muzz. Our best bet is Rielly regains his 2019 form, inches closer to Norris contention and props up Brodie who takes on a Hainsey like role.

I highly doubt the Rielly-Brodie pairing is going to work. Brodie's definitely not weak out there, but he's prone to losing puck battles against those really big and aggressive forwards. He basically has the identical weaknesses that Rielly has.

May I ask why Weegar inspires any kind of excitement? Feels like the media kicked up a Weegar frenzy the past 24 hours and I just don't see it.

Incredible defensively against top competition, blocks hits, throws hits, only 26, apparently only asking for around 3M

Pretty much what we want to a tee.

Is Lehtonen playing RD? Might tell if Brodie will be on first defense pairing with Reilly. Lehtonen might be better at "playing" (sense, skill).

Who will go? Might not even have to happen.

1. Johnsson
2. Dermott
3. Kerfoot
3. Andersen
4. Mikheyev

Dubas said plan is to play dermot on the right. So lehtonen will be om the 3rd pair left

That's odd (and bad) for us, wonder if he's trying to build in his own protection from a trade

No that's because of the escrow in the new cba: "Escrow would be capped at 20 percent next season, then between 14 and 18 percent the season after. It would go down to 10 percent in 2022-23 and 6 percent for the remainder of the new labor deal, which would carry through 2025-26 with a provision for a one-year extension, Sportsnet said."

So you backload the contract to lose less to the escrow.

Brodie isn't the "Big bruiser" that many fans have clamoured for, but I do think he is a really solid fit.

The Leafs are a team, just based on what they have up front, who's success is going to be driven by a relentless attack. They need to get better on the forecheck, without a doubt, but having another excellent puckmoving defenceman is really a solid fit for them. I know I'll take heat for this comment, but he and Alex Pietrangelo are very similar style defenceman. AP may be big, but he doesn't hit.

As for the contract, this year, it's not going to really matter whether it was $5m, $4.5m, or $4m for Brodie, one of Johnsson/Kerfoot are going to have to move regardless. What doesn't necessarily make sense to me is that Brodie is an excellent skating dman... why not sign him to a 5th year and knock a little off the AAV?

Same here man. I know Brodie very well. He's actually a great defensemen with some very positive aspects to his game, but he doesn't address where our D is weak. It's ridiculous if we don't find a proper partner for Rielly by now.

I have to agree, I'm not sure it's the right pick up either but it's a big improvement, and he's an underrated D man. He certainly would have been a great pick up for Kadri.

Right now, in UFA season, they need some battlers who refuse to lose. I hope Dubas isn't done with the back end. Nothing splashy now, just sound and tough presence back there is what they need.

It's still early. At least we see that Dubas isn't pretending the Leaf team was anything but what it was. Can he alter the look of the bottom 6 upfront some more, and add a stay at home, D man? Let's see how and who he trades, if at all.

If he is done. This Leaf team is more competitive, but, still a little light.

It sounds like you're describing a left handed Barrie... Obviously that's an exaggeration, Brodie brings a few factors that Barrie doesn't, I think brings a lot more jam and isn't a defensive blackhole but yeah he's not what I would have envisioned as our primary blueline fix.

Brodie and Barrie are incredibly different

It's a start but not the answer, I think he's a better fit for Muzzin than Rielly. Hope Dubas can somehow squeeze Tanev in as well.

I'm ok with the term on this one

Doesn't the lowest year have to be 60% of the highest year?

No, different rules for back-loaded, the contract cannot increase by more than 100% (2.5 in this case) of the lower value salary of the first two seasons, or decrease by more than 50% (1.25) of that same value in any adjacent season.
