Confirmed with Link: TJ Brodie to TOR | 4 years 5M per

Or it didn't make sense from a financial point? Should he have given guys like Nylander away and then sign Petra?
You don't have to believe it but the logic plays into it.

No, never. Pietro was never coming here, only the uninformed in our fan base thought so. Of course his agent is going to float that his client is considering the richest franchise in hockey, its a negotiating tactic. Every big ticket UFA is coming here, yet so few actually do. If Dubie for a second thought Pietro was a legit option he would have put a pause on Brodie. Clearly he figured out he was getting played so he went for his next best option.

I give credit for Dubas doing something prudent.

That's odd (and bad) for us, wonder if he's trying to build in his own protection from a trade

It seems mostly about the player avoiding escrow in the short term.

I think the lack of bonuses means its not buyout proof though, which gives the team an extra option if worst comes to worst

It’s a sad day for Flames fans.

Brodie will have 5 games of a really bad turnover that changes the dynamic of the game, but you can count on him for the vast majority of GP. Plus, he plays his best hockey in the playoffs.

Looks like I’ll be watching some Leafs games next season.

Congrats on getting him. I can guarantee you Brodie for 4 x 5m > 7 years x whatever Pietrangelo makes.

I don't believe that. He could have done 8M per now if he had the balls to make a big move.
Not defending Dubas but what if Pietra didn’t want to play in TO? And quite frankly, need to appreciate that he was up front about it instead of hooking Dubas.
I understand Pietra and Carlo(his mouthpiece) said Leafs would be good....but maybe that’s just for his own PR.

Than Pietrangelo? Lool ones a top 10 defender in the league an the others a fringe top 60. Pietrangelo is the leafs 3rd best player most likely after AM and MM. Brodie a good player but he wont provide anywhere near the value peitrangelo would have provided

Brodie is a better fit not player. Don't jump the gun though

Thanks.. now any chance you'll send Tkhacuk (how do you spell his name?) our way?

This is basically spot on. It was always the danger even before he hit the market.

I just hope Florida doesn't win him. It seems fairly certain that he wants to be in LV. His options have certainly dwindled quickly though.

No one is talking about Sandin..........he has terrific hockey sense and if he is stronger this year as he should be, he could be an excellent offensive d man.
As far as trading johnsson....they may have to but they don't have as much talent up front as some people think.
Matthews,Marner. and Nylander.......then a drop off to the slow tavares...and then what?
They aint that great.

Fans have consistenly underestimated what players sign for as free agents. I still remember people penciling in Tavares for 9m.

I feel like we would have caught wind of $10M plus offers for Pietrangelo already if they were really on the table.

Additionally, not many teams have the cap space for that sort of move (ignoring internal budgets, which most teams are using due to the pandemic)

If we get Weeger, our defensive play suddenly improves by a great amount. Both are alright offensively too especially Weeger.

Could be the case.

I think he would have wanted to player (maybe still does if Dubas can make it work).

No, different rules for back-loaded, the contract cannot increase by more than 100% (2.5 in this case) of the lower value salary of the first two seasons, or decrease by more than 50% (1.25) of that same value in any adjacent season.

Yep.

According to this information Dubas was "Not very close" to signing Pietrangelo. So besides him what other right handed shooting defenseman like Chris Tanev, are available as UFA's, if you specifically want a right handed shooting defenseman?

Besides the cap issue, I don't think Dubas could go to the board again and tell them he needs to pay another player $15 million plus in signing bonuses every July for the next few years on a 7 year contract.

I imagine Sandin will be in the AHL.

More than likely they have some kind of plan involving Johnsson or Andersen. Perhaps moving Andersen for futures and using Johnsson to get the goalie, or just moving Johnsson for futures. Then sign a replacement for Johnsson who can play 4C and a versatile 13th forward and I would say we are good for this offseason.

Maybe they do Johnsson for Kuemper (with small pluses involved) and then have a taker like Buffalo for Andersen. That would open up almost 4 mill in cap, which should give them more than enough money to re-sign Mikheyev and Dermott, as well as signing two more forwards to round out that group.

Well I was referrring to Dubas' statement that they can remain cap compliant "without having to necessarily move somebody that people would normally look at and say, well they're going to have to move this player."

Moving Johnsson definitely makes the most sense.
