Confirmed with Link: TJ Brodie to TOR | 4 years 5M per

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
We have Muzzin who is comparable in playing style to Gio. We'll be fine

We already have Muzzin carrying Holl, who looked like a sub-NHL player when Muzzin was out injured.

Muzzin can't stabilize everyone.

Congrats guys. That is a very solid deal for a very solid #2 defenseman.

Little scouting report for ya
Fantastic skater, one of the best ever to play for the Flames. Pacific teams don't even bother forechecking him. Also has a great defensive stick, think Duncan Keith. Proficient in the offensive zone but I wouldn't really call it a huge strength. Most dangerous offensively rushing the puck, has a great backhand pass. Keeps a good gap and one of the better transition guys out there. Plays better RD than LD don't ask me why.

Not a particularly good PKer, kind of weak clearing the front of the net. Doesn't throw hits basically ever but doesn't shy away from contact either and is generally good at using his body positionally. Occasionally makes a braindead pass up the middle. Very durable and eats up a lot of tough minutes. Don't buy anyone saying Giordano carries him, Gio's two best years were when he was paired with TJ.
Thanks for the report. It's nice to see an evaluation from a person of that team who watched him, and not just coming up with negatives just because they didn't get their type of player.

Good luck to the Flames:)

If this is all Dubas is going to do between now and puck drop for our defence, I'm disappointed.

Is Brodie an improvement on Barrie, yes, but Barrie was a player I never wanted us to get in the first place, and it was a debacle.

Brodie, while an upgrade, is still a band aid and not a player I would have pursued as a long-term part of the core needed. As much as Barrie was sheltered in Colorado and how he was exposed here, we don't have a Giordano-esque partner for Brodie anywhere in our lineup, and I know he is going to get exposed again.

Brodie loses puck battles in the corners, he doesn't clear the crease, and he gets beat regularly to the outside. He's a left handed shot who plays the right side because he doesn't play LHD very well.

Again, I really question if Dubas knows how to put together what we need from defence. Barrie should never have been done, and Brodie was right behind him on my list of not wanted players, who we are now tied up with for the next 4 years.

Just like I thought Barrie was going to be a fail, I think Brodie is going to be exposed here as well, and the only positive is that he can exposed in the Seattle draft. When that's the silver lining on a deal, that's a lousy deal.

Would much rather have gone after DeMelo or Weegar, or Shmidt from Vegas, and I'm still hoping we have a chance to make a move for them, (obviously not DeMelo after he re-upped with Winnipeg), particularly if Vegas is signing Pietro.

Waiting and hoping that there is more to come and our defence will continue to be "augmented", but as it stands right now, there is no way I see Brodie as a 1 RHD option on this team. I'd be ok with him as the 2nd RHD pairing, but we didn't need to spend $4.7 million in cap space that we don't have for that. Holl, while not ideal, did a very respectable job on that pairing with Muzzin and I feel he is going to get better with more experience (last year was his first full year of regular duty). We have plenty of 3rd pariing RHD options to cycle through, from Dermott, to Sandin, to Lehtonen, to Liljegren. I'm fine with that, as we do need to find where these guys fit in, and if they don't, find where they fit...

What we needed was to settle our top RHD and if the plan is for it to be Brodie, like Barrie, it's going to be inadequate and exposed badly. Don't like the deal, and hoping desperately there is more to come.

Holl's numbers were still good away from Muzzin. Anyways Holl-Dermott 3rd pair is strong.
If people just stop caring we didn't get this hulking giant on D, they will see Brodie is a great move. Helps this team defensively.

I live out west. My Flames friends are saying nothing but AMAZING things about this guy. Great at retrieving pucks, great exiting the zones. Hard on the puck. Smooth skater. Only negative is he can't shoot.

He is basically the polar opposite of Tyson Barrie.

I am super psyched for him and think he is a great partner for Mo.

Would be a good defense to aim for, it's still on the weak side but it's atleast adequate. Half my family is Calgary fans, I've watched Brodie for ages. His skating is so slick it's not even funny and he's a wicked breakout passer, but a shutdown D he is not. Him and Gio made a picture perfect pairing because they covered eachother's weaknesses up incredibly well.

Man this reads like someone who doesn't know who Brodie is. He is a huge boost to this team defensively. He and Muzzin would be a fantastic pair.
Also we are in on Weeger just to calm you down.

Signing A.P to me was the right move. It was the HR swing. I realized it was always going to be tough and unfortunately, it's not going to happen. I will remain of the position that it was the right play, but, there is more than one way to tackle the problems with this lineup.

I've been of the opinion that Dubas would have to be creative, wave a magic wand and find it within him to even salvage this teams short term playoff prospects. Simmonds and Brodie improve where they need improvement.

Someone(s) has to leave now for certain. We probably need another tough/compete minded winger and D man. D man first, so we have at least a reliable top 4. That's just my opinion.

If Dubas can make this team tougher to play against (he must), he will indeed be a wizard.

Is Lehtonen playing RD? Might tell if Brodie will be on first defense pairing with Reilly. Lehtonen might be better at "playing" (sense, skill).

Who will go? Might not even have to happen.

1. Johnsson
2. Dermott
3. Kerfoot
3. Andersen
4. Mikheyev

Weeger is a better option then Savard.
Well since Muzzin is like Gio, we'll be ok.

That's odd (and bad) for us, wonder if he's trying to build in his own protection from a trade

I'd say it's because even the Leafs money pit isn't bottomless and they've already forked out a gazillion dollars in signing bonuses heading into a season where they might not have fans in the seats. Dubas literally said they don't have infinite money and are finding ways to save this season.

Gio is a stud man, he flew under the radar for far too long before he really broke out offensively. I wish Muzzin was half the D he was.

I didn't want Brodie either. Just kind of strikes me as odd that this is the second offseason where Toronto was in pursuit of this player, and he's basically a compromise. LHD playing RD. Granted, Babcock isn't here anymore to fuss over it, but I can't help but think Dubas probably could have done okay just building a blueline to Babcock's specifications. Mobile, big wingspan guys who can handle the chaos when the shit hits the fans and clean LHD-RHD pairs. Sprinkle in a guy who can make a reliable stretch pass and that's all you really need.

Gio is a recent Norris Trophy winner too, and that's not going to be Muzz. Our best bet is Rielly regains his 2019 form, inches closer to Norris contention and props up Brodie who takes on a Hainsey like role.

It's a really good step in the right direction, boys

im not quite sure how you change a teams style in 1 offseason but moves like this will help

johnson/kerfoot hopefully are dealt but easier said than done

I'll take Weegar or Savid (especially at 50%) honestly.

But Weegar is 100% my top choice.

May I ask why Weegar inspires any kind of excitement? Feels like the media kicked up a Weegar frenzy the past 24 hours and I just don't see it.
