NHL Free Agency Live Blog: Latest rumours, trades, signings, reaction

A natural left shot, the 30-year-old Brodie is happy skating on the right side and should slide in nicely next to the offensive-minded Morgan Rielly in Toronto's top four. Rielly has been unable to find a comfortable, stay-at-home partner since Ron Hainsey left the club last off-season.

Responsible in his own zone, Brodie, a native of Chatham, Ont., put up 19 points over 64 games in 2019-20.

His underlying numbers are strong.

Despite starting most shifts in his own zone, Brodie drives possession, and he has been a plus-36 defender over the past two seasons. Further, he rarely turns the puck over in his own zone — a crippling deficiency in the Leafs' recent efforts.

Dubas has long had eyes for Brodie.

LMAO

we don't have enough defensemen who lose puck battles, get another one!

Officially on the fire Dubas bandwagon now. This GM refuses to learn.
Brodie is a very good add? Alone hes not enough to fix the defensive issues however hes a 2/3 and should be that for 2 more years atleast.

We still need to find a way to get a manson/cernak/weegar/tanev/savard/larsson to pair with rielly.

Holl+AJ+ should be pieces we are trying to deal if we are keeping dermott for the right side

When we continue to get pinned in our end because all of our D are weak on the boards and down low you'll get it.

if you're worried about paying Brodie 5 million when he's 33/34, I doubt you would want to pay Pietrangelo 8.5+ from age 33-38

And 35 is the real danger zone for D men. The number of D men who are still playing in the nhl North of that is minimal. Interesting the current front office has avoided/been wary of crossing that barrier

That's why we need to compliment brodie by looking to get one of those names I mentioned

Rielly- 1 if the big physical D mentioned
Muzzin-Brodie
Lethenon-Dermott

Our top 4 has two strong puck moving and swift skating guys with 2 good defensive, physical shutdown players.

Dubas cant be done with the defense yet. Hes gonna find the last piece and soon via trade

David Savard should 100% be our target.

Dream world:

trade Nylander for Parayko, allows St Louis to re-sign Petro

or

trade Nylander for a nice futures package, sign Petro

I don’t see either happening, and I love Nylander. But both moves make our team Way better

We can potentially get him for cheap if jackets are serious looking at a offersheet or hall.

Issue becomes we need to kove AJ+Kerfoot right after. That was gonna be a problem regardless though if we gotten Pietrangelo at 8.5 or brodie+Savard at 9

Uhh nylander makes 7M and parayko 5.5M. They actually take on 1.5M in capspace. They cant even sign dunn back rn I think? They're keep paryako hes their 1D for next 2 years and them theyll try to re-sign.

AJ should be moved, but the Leafs don't have a replacement for Kerfoot.

Congrats guys. That is a very solid deal for a very solid #2 defenseman.

Little scouting report for ya
Fantastic skater, one of the best ever to play for the Flames. Pacific teams don't even bother forechecking him. Also has a great defensive stick, think Duncan Keith. Proficient in the offensive zone but I wouldn't really call it a huge strength. Most dangerous offensively rushing the puck, has a great backhand pass. Keeps a good gap and one of the better transition guys out there. Plays better RD than LD don't ask me why.

Not a particularly good PKer, kind of weak clearing the front of the net. Doesn't throw hits basically ever but doesn't shy away from contact either and is generally good at using his body positionally. Occasionally makes a braindead pass up the middle. Very durable and eats up a lot of tough minutes. Don't buy anyone saying Giordano carries him, Gio's two best years were when he was paired with TJ.

If we want Savard and to run a 20/21 man roster we have to move kerfoot as well and then sign a guy like eakin/wallmark/hauls at 1.5M-2M to be our 3C. We would ride them for a year atleast until hallinder can step in and then wed be seeing who emerges as 3C long term b/w hallinder/hirovanen/SDA/abramov
