You've said this twice now and have been wrong both times. It shows a limited understanding of net presence.

Height is much less important than strength and positioning. Add in stick work and he can still be a beast in front of the net.
To be clear I'm not knocking him but there are certain players in the league like Tom Wilson who he's going to have a more difficult time battling for position with in front of the net. I'm not even saying it's an issue, he just can't have that match up. If you think he can handle Wilson or the bigest players in the league in front of the net you are very mistaken, he's going to have a difficult time moving him out of the net front. But that's why we can have a Muzzin-Lybushkin for those match ups and we can have Lilly in a different match up.

Timothy Liljegren

Defense -- shoots R
Born Apr 30 1999 -- Kristianstad, Sweden
[22 yrs. ago]
Height 6.01 -- Weight 192 [185 cm/87 kg]

That's really not very small
The average NHLer is (6' 1 1/3") tall, weighs 204.42. He's a little bit below the 50th percentile. The average defenseman is 73.87" (6' 1 7/8") tall, weighs 209.66 lbs.

Keefe's comments about his first stint in the NHL are coming true. He said during that time that Liljegren takes him to adjust to every level, but once he does, he's a great player who can impact both special teams.

He hasn't had a chance on the PP but you know what I mean. the playoff run the year after the Marlies won the Calder Cup, there is reason people said Liljegren was the skater MVP for the Marlies in the playoffs. It was because he was so good defensively while the attention was going to Sandin for his offense.

Doesn't matter what Giordano thinks, obviously the experts on all things Liljegrin are Carlo Coliacovo and Brian frickin Hayes :sarcasm:

Seriously tho, he and Gio looked fantastic tonight. Come playoff time I could see this D lineup health permitting:

Reilly Brodie
Gio Liljegren
Muzzin Lybushkin

I like this configuration, but Holl and Sandin have also played really well. Can't take out Muzzin, Rielly, Brodie, or Gio. Liljegren has been awesome, and Bush has been great. 4 guys for 2 spots. Tough decisions to make for Keefe.

Yea, Liljegrin was a beast in those playoffs. Him and Marincin were the pairing I felt the most comfortable with throughout that run.

It won't be difficult at all .. Keefer will go with his vets .. to me I would sub Holl out for Sandin to play with Muzzy on 3rd pair but very likely he will go
Gio Brodie
Rielly Lub
Muzzy Holl
We have Gio now for 2nd pair on PP so Sandin has less value that way

Either way da lineup on defense has improved immensely with these 2 adds .. Lily will not get in unless there are 2 injuries

Why?

Tampa won their first cup with a 22 year old Cernak and a 21 year old Sergachev.

You don't play worse players because they are older.
I always laugh at the argument that you can't play young players in the playoffs because they *don't have any experience and will get exposed"

Well... how the hell do you expect them to get experience then?

We didn't play the kids much last year, you need to get them games this year. They're playing well and we win more games when they both play. Put them in.

Same. Agreed. It's ludicrous. You ice your best 20 players in the playoffs, not your oldest 20.

What happens next season if you don't play them this season?

"Well, they have no playoff experience, so they can't be trusted."

How many years do they need to kick the can down the road before giving them playoff time?

Because people can use that argument every single year.

then you better plan which asylum you're going to, cause Holl isn't getting scratched no matter what despite how vastly superior Liljegren looks.
Holl is Keefe's version of Marincin.

Regardless...Not many know this but in his draft year it was him and patrick that was touted as the top prospects so im glad he's showing up big time. He was projected to be a number 1 if not top pairing for sure at the time, ofc things changed. I still hope he can get there, would be amazing for sure.

I actually think it’s the opposite. Most people do remember his hype going into his draft year and that is why so many people think he has been disappointing. He is developing fantastically based on where he was drafted but some people are stuck on that pre draft hype.

Fwiw, my issue with experience last year was more of a general lack of it in the NHL, not specifically playoff experience. That said, Sandin and Liljegren have played lots of games this year, and more significant roles too, so that makes me feel better about using them in a role this year in the playoffs.

So I was looking into some stats and Liljegren is actually having a crazy rookie season where the only reason he's not a Calder threat is a lack of ice time and no powerplay opportunities. He leads all Leafs defensemen in expected goals for percentage, actual goals for percentage, corsi%, fenwick%, assists/60, points/60, is 10% points clear of any other dman in terms of xGf% paired with Rielly and is the only defenseman in the NHL to feature on 3 of the NHL's top 20 D pairings by xGf% at 5 on 5 with a minimum of 100 minutes played together. He might actually be a good top pairing guy already if he had more minutes and powerplay opportunities.

The Leafs are going to have 8 legitimate NHL defensemen. This is a good problem to have. Injuries happen, and it's good that the Leafs will have essentially top-four caliber talent waiting to slide in.

I personally would have Liljegren in their starting 6, if everyone is healthy. But I suspect Keefe and the coaching staff will not lean that way.
