He could be a 45 point two way player. Like a more offensive stralman.

That's his ceiling.

Terrifyingly, his floor imo could also be right handed Jake Gardiner.
I trust the Leafs and what they are doing with his development, because there's been some scary signs at times despite strong underlying numbers.

Jake Gardiner was actually a good player though. He did a lot more good than not playing for us.

Happy to Liljegren getting to where we need him to get.

I was so hyped when he fell to us, and it’s awesome seeing him coming into his own, especially with Dermott gone now.

Wasn’t a Gio booster but if he can help Liljegren continue to develop, that is invaluable to a young defender finding his way.

Only one game together and it’s only going to get harder, but so pumped to see Liljegren getting the ball here and running with it.

He's much better defensively than either Stralman or Gardiner were when they were his age. .700SV% goaltending really skewed the perception towards "He's bad defensively" when really he's been dominating 5 on 5 play on any pair for the most part this season.

He's on pace for 30 as a rookie with low minutes and no PP time, 45 is his absolute ceiling now? Even Gardiner broke 50.

So tomorrow will we hear Hayes, O-Dog, Carlo and Bieksa say what a great young D prospect we have in this kid.....Keep doing what you’re doing kid, you may not be the flashiest but your putting in solid minutes and putting up points.

I like some of the comparisons and find it fitting that of all people, Dubas had to find a not overly big but physical defender like Giordano. Gio's played and thrived in the rough and tumble western conference without having his size be a limiting factor... It would be great if our own mid sized guys can pick up some tricks of the trade from him.

It'll come for Liljegren. I think right now he's still thinking and trying to be careful about picking his spots to be more physical (making sure he doesn't get caught without support). As he adjusts to the league it will become more natural and he'll read that better.

The things that are more difficult, closing gaps, getting the puck back, and moving it in traffic are already strengths so he has the difficult part out of the way.

At this time I don't care how he gets the puck as long as he gets it.

He's a bit small so he's going to be limited with moving players in front of the net but like Brodie he has everything else and just 22. Gio or Muzzin is a good partner for him.

Waaay to much ego on that list for that to ever happen and for them to eat crow. Instead expect a “well the kid played well because of Gio but that’s to be expected” or some crap like that

He's a bit small

I like Lilly a lot and those are some big ass traps but unlike someone who is 6’4, 220 he isn’t going to have the lower body strength of an Ekholm, Hedman or Manson body type where they can just own the front of the net. I don’t think you need 6 guys like that but you’re probably better off having 3 or 4. I think Lily and Brodie are amazing though, just pair them with our bigger defenders and we should be good.

The worst part of this is that all of these guys call Leaf fans "Joe from the Bridges" or "dopes" implying that we're impulsive and poor at thinking things through. Meanwhile, their takes on Lily are the ultimate take of a real "dope" - impulsive, arrogant and negatively skewed by poor reasoning.

Jake Gardiner? If Lily is as good as Jake, we would be blessed. Jake was a hugely underrated d-man.

Note: Talking only about someone's perceived flaws doesn't make one smart or a better judge of hockey talent. It makes you an MSM parrot.

The kid is a rookie who is making huge strides in his play right before our eyes. How about we talk about that?

Guys like Josi/Toews/Gio don't have to be big guys to be effective in that area. Neither does Liljegren.

He already is effective there. Bad goaltending made it look otherwise for a while though.

You've said this twice now and have been wrong both times. It shows a limited understanding of net presence.

Height is much less important than strength and positioning. Add in stick work and he can still be a beast in front of the net.

Even that weight is out of date.

The most recent update was a couple years back when he was on the Marlies at came in at 198:

He's even bigger than that now.

The Leafs management handled this kid very well. He wasn't rushed. D-men need patience. Now his talent is taking over. He's still young enough where he plays cheap. Right now that might be his biggest asset on this roster. He should be a Leaf for a very long time.
