This. It will be voted on and ratified tomorrow.

Also the league doesn't need to authorize GM's to talk to other GM's. Burke and Gillis could be working on a deal (or could have been working on a deal) already.

Gillis has already gotten the Ok from Luongo to seek a trade. I think the waiving of the no trade is a formality at this point.

Its no big secret Luongo's first choice based on his comments and currently living and practicing in Florida, would be to return to that State if a trade where to occur.

He sounded luke warm at best of the idea of being dealt to the Leafs, as he claimed he needed to first see and weigh ALL his options available and then make the best decision for him and his family.

Luongo is hoping the Panthers his former team come up with the right package that will return him to where he played before. Stephen Weiss would fill a nice 2nd line center hole (for an injured Kesler) if he were part of a Florida package being offered.

If this becomes a bidding war for his services Vancouver only serves to gain, and with a NMC clause in his contract Luongo will get the final say in this.

I agree with you, but what i am really curious about is how does the buyout $'s apply in the team revenue calculations.

If i read correctly, the buyouts count against the players 50/50 share. What I would like to find out is if a team buysout a player, does that teams "revenue" go down and therefore they pay theoretically "less" into revenue sharing (if applicable).

For a team like the Leafs, it maybe quite easy to take on Luongo's contract and if he doesn't workout after next season, take the buyout option. We know for a fact it won't count against the cap.

So if it just takes away from "revenue sharing $'s", then what do we care???

Even if it doesn't take away from "revenue sharing", us as fans shouldn't care that Rogers/Bell make ~$50mil less.

Us fans wouldn't care that Rogers and Bell make $50 million less but they sure as hell would!

I want to take this opportunity to say I was correct even before the lockout was official I had mentioned burke was a genius for not signing big name big money ufas. Burke waiting until the new CBA was decided on was the best move for our team, and the fact other teams didnt wait and over spent (esp with cap going down next year) shows patience is a virtue. Now Burke can take advantage of teams that need to get rid of big salary players/players that normally wouldnt be traded will be, and Burke has set us up to take advantage of that.

On the Luongo front, I think we gott'em already and the framework of a deal is in place; however as per NHL rules Burke and Gillis were not allowed to talk to player agents during the lockout, and until the new CBA is officially ratified the same rule applies. Luongo has been hinting since the good news of a new CBA that something is probably imminent. What I do not understand is how FLA is even in the mix still. All teams with the lockout lost big bucks...Toronto being the team the lockout would affect the least as we generate the most profit. FLA is on the other end of that spectrum and laid off a ton of employees just to barely stay a float money wise. In addition FLA have arguable the best goaltending prospect out there...and in order to land Luongo they would have to trade massive salary back to VAN in essence all their good players that helped them make the playoffs (not all but a few) would end up going the other way. I could see Lu and Raymond ending up in Toronto soon after the CBA is officially ratified. The likely leafs involved....bozak franson komi reimer scrivens and a pick or mid prospect (not saying all those guys are in the deal i am saying a cpl of those guys.

I am excited to see the puck drop on prob Jan 19th and one other thing to note... Randy Carlyle said Van Reimsdyk is starting on the wing...whereas before the lockout he was saying he would be tried at center....this comment could mean another deal is in the works (or we are getting lu and a center in a van deal)...only time will truly tell...but finally we can say GO LEAF GO !

bozak kadri reimer lombardi for luongo and alberts ?

Seriously? Massive overpayment!

With the new CBA Luongo's contract gives him neutral, if not negative value. He's going to be inflicting a 5+ million dollar cap hit on his team for 3-4 years after he's retired. The first three pieces you're giving up in that deal all have decent to good value.

The Canucks will be in cap trouble next season if Luongo is still on the books. Opposing GMs know this. Luongo will not be trades for significant value.

Has any word come out as to when teams will be allowed to start signing free agents and trading players? Does that happen tomorrow? Thursday?

Doesn't the CBA go into effect Wednesday once both sides have voted on it?

Once both sides approve it, Owners will tommorow, while the players will start their online voting thursday I would assume, and that would be wrapped up friday, and camps open saturday and puck drop a week later.

That is how I assume it will go

To me he sounded like he was open to it. Obviously Florida is his first choice but I was kind of surprised that he mentioned the Leafs specifically and admitted that "they are part of the equation" in his own words. Seems to me that he's willing to come here if Florida doesn't pony up.

I heard Saturday for the players vote to be finished.

If they've tightened that up great, but I've also heard it isn't even on paper yet.

I thought the buyout amnesty was after this season?

Fans might not care if the Owners need to pay large buyouts but the Owners sure would.

1. Two buyout periods. One after this year and one after next. Total 2 buyouts per team allowed. (This is my understanding)

2. Owners would obviously care but what i was trying to suggest in my post was that IF the buyouts are part of the equation which calculated total revenue for a team, with the Leafs, it will just most likely decrease/negate the "revenue sharing" they would normally pay to poor teams and thus not have a huge impact on the bottom line.

I could be wrong on #2, this is why i posted as a question originally. Would love to see what the CBA says about this...anyone know?

I would love to see what people think would be going the other way.

What do think? Who's leaving Toronto?

I am going to stick to the rumoured Bozak, Kadri, plus a prospect. If the tumour of Raymond coming back our way then maybe:

To Van
Bozak, Kadri, Rynnas, Franson

To Toronto
Luongo, Raymond

I'd like to know what direction he's given to his agent.

Did he say I'm open for a trade, or I'd be okay in Miami? Did he say I'd be okay in Florida, the USofA, the Southest, the East, anywhere?

Is Toronto the only team with goalie needs? Is Lindback the real deal or Gustavsson II

Have we discussed the possibility of bring in Luongo and using one of the buyouts on him and negotiating a more reasonable contract? Does that make any sense?

That's a terrible trade for Vancouver. Terrible. I think Luongo ends up in FLA...but it is pretty well known that Gillis will want a roster centerman as part of the deal. Center is not exaclty the Leafs strength, so not only is it a bad deal for the Canucks...its a horrible deal for the Leafs although outside of Kadri I couldn't care less.

They only need a temporary centerman while Kesler is out.

Long term they'd probably be happy getting a 3rd. line centerman, who can play in the top 6.

I think the cost would be around 30 million.

Also, I believe I read somewhere that the amnesty can't be used on contracts that you've traded for. The amnesty buyout can only be used on a player who is currently with the team he signed the deal with.

Like Ulf mentioned there is also the fact that its a terrible waste of money.

Also remember that if a player is bought out he becomes a FA. No doubt there would be a number of teams interested in Luongo at a more friendly price.

Once you buy out a player, that same team cannot renegotiate a deal with that player. I'm willing to bet Burke will use one of his buyouts on a player from a another team, possibly Malone from Tampa, take back a prospect and or picks and buyout Malone.
