Stu give away on the PK isn't really a big deal especially in a regular season game.

I would not discourage him from trying to that. That is who he is and stick to his natural instinct

As a coach, what shouldn't be tolerated is lazy defensive efforts and blatant dumb giveaways (ala Batherson)
No player in the history of hockey should be making moves at his own blue line on a pk when you are up by 2 goals. No one is saying for him not to be creative but this is hockey 101. It absolutely should not be encouraged. There are certain mistakes that are ok that was not one of them.

What do you think that was by Stutzle in comparison to your last sentence....

Very impressed by his goal scoring this season. I thought of him more as a playmaker who could score, but his finishing has been fantastic. A bit more Bure than Forsberg. If he can dial in a one-timer he could add to those totals.

Playing with two different types of playmakers in Giroux and Chucky helps for sure.

Forsberg is my fav all-time player. I can see a bit of him, but that's just pure wishful thinking.

... is it?

I agree - but I do think that Stutzle is a very clear notch above Norris in terms of caliber. Stutzle might end up being the best center we've ever developed before.

I love Spezza on so many levels, and his talent is second to none in this organizations past or present. But everything we complained about with his game are literally strengths of Stutzles - elite skating, willingness to shoot, high compete level, dependable in all situations - Spezza would have been Lemieux 2.0 if he wasn't so questionable in all of those other areas.
He’s wasn’t that questionable in other areas.

Ok then. Spezza was an elite skater and PKer who loved to shoot the puck with his heavy shot....

Feel better now, even if its not true?
Spezza was a good skater. Don’t let his last season here on a busted back cloud your mind.

I mean he probably could have played PK if asked.

He had 5 30+ g seasons 5 20+ I think plus he was on pace for those in some games he played less.

Spezza was an elite number 1 center that the best d men in the league legit could handle.

Don’t think eh ever would have been Lemieux but he was what he was.

I understand where you're coming from. But someone else listed the ways of dealing with it and I liked a lot of them. Like talk to him on the Bench or in the Video Session. I agree he has to be told that this type of thing can not happen.

I don't think pummelling him verbally or benching him for it is a good move though. I can guarantee you he knew he F'ed up the second it happened. No player wants to hurt the team and every player is fully aware when they do. Kind of like a goal against deflecting in off you. You know you F'ed up.

Hockey is obviously a super mental sport, so in some cases getting benched or verbally lashed might fix it and/or fire up the player to learn from it and do better. However, in some cases getting benched or verbally lashed can also cause players shut down and their performance suffers. The approach should vary by what type of approach is suited to motivate that individual and the severity and consistency of the problem.

Different strokes for different folks.

This is the real x factor. Just gotta keep this core together they'll all be better with another year of development. Pinto went through a little bit of a lul but looks like he is back again. It's a long season for these young players not just physically but mentally too. I know people want results now but it's a process.
We've done pretty well when you factor in health

Compare us to Buffalo, NYI, Pens, even Det, and I think it shows with good health we'd potentially separate ourselves from the pack of bubble teams

I would not classify that as a blatant dumb giveaway. He pretty much has a good opportunity to carry the puck out and unfortunately he got his pocket picked right at the blue line. Yes, definitely the coach should have a talk with him but not completely discourage him on that play completely.

High-end players do tend to make high skill, high risk plays, and at times it could fire back, Stutzle is a student of the game and a hard working player, he will learn just pick his spots, but I would not complete discourage him from his natural instincts

He does this game in game out on 5on5 a lot as well, if you have noticed. Make that slick move in a tight space to beat the initial forechecker or two and carries the puck out, and at times create an off man rush

If you see some of Batherson's defensive efforts and giveaways, you would know what a stupid blatant giveaway is. That is why one is a -30 and the other is in the positive

Then you are being biased. You never make moves at your own blue line no matter what the scenario. Let alone on a PK with people already leaving the zone. You are ignoring the situation completely. Again I dont think they should go crazy on him but its not an acceptable mistake that should be addressed one way or another.

I am well versed in the sport, I know whats stupid and what isnt. That was probably the worst decision a player has made all season. Its not about their overall body of work were talking about one specific play. It turned the momentum in the game. They were lucky they were playing such a bad team. They had the game on lock and it let them back in.

I love Stutzle, he should absolutely be making plays but that was not one of those situations where he should have done it.

I agree with this 99.99%. It was a boneheaded mistake and Stützle knew it right away. He tried it out of an abundance of confidence. He's been making a difference all over the ice. He wanted to make a play, it backfired and he knew he f***ed up. I know why he did it. He's starting to dominate and thought he could have his way all game. Call it overconfidence or whatever but I understand why he tried that. He was trying to step on their throats.

All that being said, if we talk the talk of meaningful games we need to walk the walk. These are important games and you need to make the layups so to speak. You CANNOT be trying that in a game that could cost you the season. I'm confident that he won't do it again. And like you said, luckily we were playing a really bad team.

If you dont think that having 34 goals as a career high is VERY low for a guy with Spezzas elite shot and overall talent, then I don't know what else to tell you, other than the obvious....

The guy didn't use his shot enough. Period.

Spezza was the best playmaking center we've ever had. Yashin, Norris, and now Stutzle are/were great shooting centermen but not quite the level of Spezza's playmaking and creativity. If I had to compare Stutzle to a former Sen it would be Hossa. When Stutzle puts on 15 more pounds of muscle, he will be a clone of Hossa.

In 06-07 he was scoring at a 41 goal pace (injuries messed with that) and had a 30g average for us, but I do agree he could have shot more. His shot was very good, would've loved to see it more

Stützle plays more like Havlat than Hossa. He's shifty and dances around the ice. That's Havlat. Hossa was more power and body positioning.

I see that a little too. I think Hossa was more of a pure physical specimen than Stü will ever be. He was a beast coming out of the corners and so strong on the puck. I think he was a little more of a North-South player than Stü as well. However I think Stützle is and will be the more creative player of the two.

Came across a cool stat on an IG page called Big Head Hockey. Stu at 21 is scoring at a 40g page and 90p pace. Since the lockout, the only ones other 21 year olds to score at that pace are McDavid, Stamkos, Malkin, Ovie, and Staal.

:D

Spezza was a pass first centre.

Joe Thornton had a career high 37 and only twice passed 30
Adam Oates had a career high 46 but only twice passed 30

Oates is in the Hall, Joe's going to the Hall (I hope he shaves first)

Right. And except for McDavid those other guys really did it coming out of the lockout

Another way of looking at that stat is other than McDavid, Stu is the only guy to do this in 15 years (assuming he does do it)

Timmy hit 70 pts last night... Not much made of it after the loss.
