Didn't Flahr and Fletcher once say they preferred the mid-rounds of the next year?

Every time Flahr mentions it being a weak class, I just assume it will end up terrific. That's what happened in 2021. They're quite arrogant in their (often devastatingly wrong) evaluations. From always preferring the next class, to trading up in the mid rounds, to making a plethora of fit picks, to passing on high end talent within range of a single pick. And they don't learn from this galaxy brain shit.
Fletcher said that in 2022 about 2023, yeah. Just like everyone else was doing that year.

How could you even truly decipher that? Most of the kids like going in the third round a year from now are doing absolutely nothing noteworthy right now. If they’re playing juniors they’re likely buried in secondary or depth roles. You could also have kids that go in that round that have noteworthy D-2 seasons by go backwards in their D-1 season. Then I guess the other would be a guy who’s good in both of those years but has size issues that capped them in that range like Mac Swanson for example this year but those are fewer in between.

Just to further illustrate their logical pretzel, they think 2024 is a weaker class. Will they trade down with the FLA 1st, since it's a bad class? Trade for a future 2nd? They traded for FLA's 2024 1st over the 2023 1st in a class they now don't like, but they apparently liked 2023 because they wanted that Bonk pick and traded a 2024 2nd to pick Bjarnason. But with ANOTHER 2023 1st on the table for Laughton (and a future 2nd), they passed it up. But they plan on trading Laughton for a 2024 1st on draft day? Or did they just telegraph that one not happening?

I think it's funny that the only 2nd rounder they have this year is a compensation pick. They only pick 6x in the first 5 rounds. In rounds 3-7, over the next 3 drafts, the only extra pick they currently have is the Hayes 6th rounder for eating half his contract.
That was the pick they could get. Florida didn’t have their 22 or 23 pick by then.

I feel pretty good about the Flyers being able to get FLA's 2023 pick for Giroux, if they wanted. They moved the 2023 1st for Chiarot a couple days earlier. Chiarot. Giroux only wanted to go to the Panthers with a full NTC, so it's not like this was suddenly developing with many bidders. It was probably a done deal before the Chiarot trade, while they waited for Giroux's 1000th game.

This franchise has zero consistency with anything they do or say. That's the takeaway. Next year, they'll say they prefer the 2025 class.

Chiarot was the priority for them. Giroux was the luxury. The 1000th game was on a Wednesday or Thursday, the trade wasn’t done until Sunday.

I simply don't believe that, and you're conjecturing as much as I am. Forget that we are comparing Claude f***ing Giroux to Chiarot.....they gave up more for Giroux.
That was the reporting at the time. Depends how they valued Tippett, but we were all begging for literally any of their other top prospects, and instead they gave us what we and they saw as 4A player that their GM didn’t even draft, and for Chiarot they added a prospect they used a 3rd round pick on in 2020.

When they made the Chiarot trade, some people thought they were out on Giroux, or at least wouldn’t have to give up a 1st to get him.

Have they ever held a presser before the deadline when they thought they were don’t making deals? Hoping they are still working on stuff. I could see a contender going after Laughton and overpaying if the flyers are asking for non 2024 1sts.

@BritainStix

I think it’s 99% just a maintenance day as reported…

Putting on my tin foil hat for a second though, if your plan is to move Laughton and you want to make sure you still get top value, putting Johansen immediately on waivers is a pretty good way to signal to teams you aren’t planning to dump Laughton. And having Johansen waiting in the wings is also a pretty good thing to make sure the current team doesn’t take a big hit if you trade Laughton.
That is what a smart GM would do. Not one getting his marching orders from a couple of dinosaurs

It’s really not that hard to think about. Nobody wants him on that contract/caphit including the Flyers. Johansen isn’t willingly walking away from whatever’s remaining on this year & the $8M for next year (even a buyout this summer has him walking away with $5.3M of it).

Options are another trade, a loan, or he goes home.

Going home is conceivable because if he gets hurt, he can’t get bought out.

This article is hilarious. The Hathaway signing was a huge win because it brought toughness the Flyers desperately lacked. I guess Laughton, Deslauriers, and Risto were insufficient.

Then he loves the Seeler signing because - wait for it - he brings toughness. The second reason is because otherwise who would play defense next year? 1. Who cares? 2. What about the other three years of the deal? 3. And best, after spending the prior 10 paragraphs slobbering over the Walker trade, the important lesson somehow never occurs to him. Why not take some cap dumps (like Ceci) to fill your defense for next season and hope one has a Walker-type season?

Between this team, its fan base, and the media covering it, it's like a 50 year long episode of Punked for the sane.

Danny needs to get on the line with all of these teams in on Guentzel, and see who wants a Konecny with an extra year of control.
