3.5 million hit for 3 years.... its unbelievable how bad this team is run..... it really is....If your getting nothing you hold out for another year.... What do you think Hayes is going to do?????? He's going to retire due to injury because he's a suck (he almost retired before last season)... instead we cave in and it costs us for the next 3 years.... have some f***ing balls..tell Torts to shut the f*** up and coach.... Same goes with TDA.....mind boggling how people do not know how to manage. We the fans get killed because of it

If it gets bought out at any point the Flyers get hit with part of the buyout too.

And the alternative was?
Who you gonna demote to give him enough PT to possibly increase his value while eating $7M in cap room next year?

For the record I don’t believe he retires. I guess it’s possible he could get hurt & go on LTIR but probably the most likely scenario if any is he gets bought out at some point before the deal ends. That would also be the most damaging to the Flyers.

When's the last time someone gave up money to retire in the NHL

Niskanen but he might have just toughed it out if it wasn’t under Covid rules/protocols. He “only” gave up a a year worth of contract though.

Vinny was another. He was a guy who had over $100M+ in contract money his career.

But obviously these are rare situations. For most guys situations I’d imagine it’s not worth it to forfeit money.

Niskanen gave up his final season so he didn't have to play here in the pandemic. But that was one year under special cricumstances.

Hayes played every game last year, so it's weird to be acting like he's injury plagued.

And lose a retained salary slot for the length of the buyout period, instead of the length of the contract.

A buyout in 2025 looks pretty good, actually.
