I'll amend the Buff injury, to a sprained ankle now that I've seen the replays. Still think it could be 4-6 weeks...

Speak for yourself, buddy... The Jets suck against the trap and it is all on the head coach to figure it out. Simply playing faster is not the solution, but it is what Maurice has been preaching this far.

I'd say effort was by far the biggest issue today, and that's on the players.

Seriously every good coach knows how to beat the trap ... hell any smart hockey fan knows how.
WTF is with Maurice ... too stubborn to change his game plan or does he really think using a blender can beat the trap.

When you can see the whole ice surface it's really glaring, passes to the wrong side of the stick, no speed thru the neutral zone, and generally no intensity, Bucky played well again tonight, but our 2 better players (Chef and Wheeler ) were not very good.

They actually weren’t terrible in the first 4-5 minutes, but then they had a whole bunch of rancid shifts preceding the Bartkowski goal where they couldn’t make a clean pass to save their life. And it was just downhill from there, absolutely nothing going on at 5v5.

Anyhow I think Maurice needs to have the guts to split Wheeler and Scheifele up at times. In games like today she they have nothing going try to put Laine with Scheifele and Wheeler with Little. It may light a spark under both of them.

Agreed, it just looks really weird that those two players have spent almost no time apart when the rest of the lineup has been juggled all over the place.

If it wasn't for Laine fans constantly campaigning for Laine to be put with Scheif, then I think this Scheifele-Wheeler thing would be a much bigger story on this board than it is. Many posters including myself don't want to be pushing the envelope on the Scheifele-Wheeler front so as not to concede to those whose agenda behind that narrative largely comes from wanting to boost Laine's stats/ice-time rather than concern for the Jets.

I don't even remember what Little-Wheeler together look like, it's been so long since they played together. This season Little and Wheeler have been on the ice together at 5 on 5 for only ~9 minutes and only 85mins starting from 2017-18 season. That's an insane stat! For comparison- Scheifele and Tanev two players who should have no need to play together have been on the ice together this season for 24 minutes.

  • Jets got caught with their feet in the mud again, with the Wild playing defensively all game. Didn't see the first period but Jets only had 11 CF and 6 SOG, so not like I missed much there. Second two-consecutive losses for the Jets - last time that happened was against CGY and MIN this year. There's a trend here, I think.
  • The line blender was in full force tonight, but even with Maurice trying to get Scheifele and Wheeler out there as much as possible, they couldn't generate any meaningful offense. Laine was taking every shot out there but also bled lots against. Copp-Lowry-Tanev was put back together and did their duty but none of them can score. x-Roslovic-Appleton were there but again saw little to no ice time.
    • The refusal to break up Scheifele-Wheeler and C-L-T is really hampering Maurice's ability to change things on the fly. The Jets are becoming easy to game plan against for teams like CGY and MIN.
  • Morrissey probably had his first bad game this year; on the flipside, Trouba's numbers looked pretty decent but was visually fighting the puck.
  • Losing Byfuglien for any amount of time is going to cause some chaos in the backend. With Poolman still sidelined with the Moose from a concussion for the past two months, it looks like Morrow will find his way back into the lineup. Hopefully his return can go as well as Kulikov's did, but as we saw with Chiarot struggling the moment Byfuglien left the ice, there is much doubt about those prospects.
  • Still a little bit confused why Myers has such high CF every game, considering it was his blocked shot that sent Parise back for the 2-0 goal (gotta "get those on net"). Lowry was correct to cover for him, but even he couldn't cover fast enough for a deflection off Trouba's knee that went directly to Coyle behind Lowry for a shot-and-goal right in front of Hellebuyck's crease.
  • Hellebuyck didn't face a lot of shots, but got fooled on Bartkowski's shot that went through about 5 players and couldn't steal the shot from right in front of him. dSv% and GSAA shows he probably should/could have had one of those, but watching the video shows that they were tough saves to make.
Chief's final eyetest says: Connor was on absolute fire to start the season, but it looks like he's just a pile of ashes now. What happened there? Similarily, other than Wheeler being able to pass on the power play, he's been struggling for a long time now and it can't help that he's being forced to play 20+ minutes a night. Time to stir things up there.

The easiest way to beat the “trap” is scoring first. Second easiest way is to draw penalties either by building up speed through the neutral zone or putting pressure on their D and goaltender with hard arounds.

I’m not sure how much either is a function of coaching, to be honest. Unless the effort level is a function of coaching, which is possible.

This implies that the Jet players themselves don't know how to beat the trap. If fans even know how, surely a hockey nerd like Scheifele must know how?

Hard to win when your 3-4 lines outplayed the top 2 lines for most of the game, putting Conner on the top brought nothing, I will say watching and focusing on Morrissey play hockey is a treat, but watching Wheeler handle the puck drives me crazy

The Edmonton game is intriguing.
On one hand we have had 2 subpar games and they have had 5
Will this be a fast paced hotly contested game or 2 struggling teams that bore us to death?

ELL + CSW didn't win, huh? Well maybe they will next game. I mean if something sucks for a couple of years, they are bound to not do so in the near future. It only makes sense.

Damn these lines better be educational because otherwise this is embarrassing.

I can't help but think that we are becoming tactically inept. We are being genius now but are paying the price for it with inexperience with actual usage of the roster.

I'm not to optimistic about Buff's injury he needed a lot of help going to the room, pretty non discript injury but he could barely put any pressure on his leg when he went off the ice.

The Jets are still top.of the West despite inconsistent play.

I don't see how Laine gets a promotion for playing bad, on too many nights. He's got a heckuva of a shot, but he looks lazy and clueless 5 on 5. Old Paul Maurice would have pushed Perreault (85-18-27 looked good 5 on 5), Roslovic or Appleton up and put Laine on the 3rd or 4th. I mean I am watching 18 year old Kotkaniemi and he looks more composed with the puck than 20 year old Fortnite. But we blame every other player but the player responsible. No accountability. Wheeler was setting up everyone again, just couldn't get shots through.

I still think some size at forward that plays more than 6 minutes per night is a necessity. To replace the Stastny factor, which brought us to our greatest heights.

Got back home now. Pretty awful game from what I saw. I asked my wife if we mixed up the Jets game for a Moose game.

Looks like the hockey gods saw I was there. Sorry folks.

If only the game was called "Ballerina" so we could give everyone an award. So annoyingly only about goals.

Best we learn to start living life without Buff anyway. He's only here another year after this.

He knows how but the question is does he want to do it. Dump and chase and winning the board battles takes it's toll on the body especially for players who play 20+ minutes.
It's regular season ... the Jets have the talent but don't want to play playoff hockey in December. Instead of using the blender Maurice should use his 4 lines more evenly.
