OT: The Pittsburgher Thread: They Killed Kenny!

I don't think it jeopardizes anything. The guy is so talented that he can basically play anywhere and I'm of the mindset right now, having Broderick Jones starting absolutely anywhere on the line is a +++ to the line as a whole. Put him at f***ing G for all I care. He has to play.

The ideal play from an assets point of view is for us to trade Chuks, bring in a FA T and draft a T. Moore makes so little money that trading him makes no sense, and I can't see teams beating his door down with a crazy offer in free agency.

And you're right, this tackle class is probably the best one in years. There looks to be 7 or 8 in the top 65 players.

Habit and instinct matter a ton in my book. Putting him at RT probably does risk diminishing his habits and instincts as a LT.

But the guy does definitely have a talent for forming the right habits very quickly based on his learning curve to date.

He is a true animal. He's so massive yet he's so lean. He is probably the leanest OT I can remember.

And if we aren't using Washington as a TE, I'd tell to eat 3 squares at Primanti's a day and he can be a tackle. He's a lean 265. Guys like Pouncey and Faneca when they lost their bulk are around 220. He can probably get up to 300 very quickly, and with the way Georgia coached him, he's got some OL technique already. I can already see Washington is going to be a waste here as a pass catcher. Make him useful.

And I'm really intrigued by Shadeur Sanders. His brashness is going to make him tremendously polarizing, but man the kid has swagger like his Dad and I think he's a real leader. I like the way he deals with the media, he is candid yet doesn't give too much away, and he doesn't easily get baited.

I actually think this draft is absolutely loaded with talent and where it is deficient it is really deficient. C and MLB are atrocious, RB, secondary, and IOL are average. If you need an OT, DL (in all forms and fashions}, QB, and WR, this is a good one. QBs may not make great pros, but they are all uber-talented, and the pedigree is crazy.

I wouldn't be so hasty with Washington. His college history always suggested it might be a journey getting the best out of his route running.

*pause* Well, okay, that's what I'm saying if I trust the coaches. But is he a better OT prospect bulked up than Dylan Cook? Idk man.

Lots of callers in the local sports shows (not just Madden) finally coming around to realizing Pickett sucks. Took you Yinzer rubes long enough. Still a bunch of his fanboys out there though, but they’ll dissipate with each passing game. Wait til Jordan Love outplays him this weekend.

Also - bet the freaking house on Penn St this weekend. Michigan’s first actual test, the worst cheating scandal of all of sports and the whole country is behind us and we have momentum giving the Twerps their annual blow out. It’s a great time to be a Nittany Lion.

Wouldn't go that far.

They don't need to do anything at RB, OG, OLB, or ILB (if Holcomb is recovering well). TE and WR, depends how you feel about fitness and Johnson's value for what he is.

That's leaves S, CB, C, OT, and DL.

S, imo, isn't a premium position and shouldn't be targeted early unless we're talking a game changing generational guy. Ditto C.

DL is a bit up in the air with Ogunjobi rarely being fully fit and Benton progressing but how fast and Heyward being a bit any moment now... but there is talent there.

Which leaves two premium positions with screaming great big holes. I would be pretty surprised if it wasn't one of those two right now (unless it has to be QB)

While I'm not real keen on 1st rd RBs, we're potentially a year away from letting Najee walk with only Warren still around. That leaves a hole that might need to be filled. It'd be an awkward pick, but still one of need.

S, yeah I sort of agree. But I wanted the guy out of Bama this year over Porter. He's the type I'd consider there.

DL is absolutely on the table. Heyward is older than dirt, was rumored to be considering retiring last year(?), and is coming off of a few injury plagued seasons. Larry is iffy like you said, and that really only leaves you a rookie Benton. Need.

OT/G/C are all needs. Our OL is mediocre at best, and that's being more than a little bit generous.

ILB we've only got Holcomb (injury concern now) and Herbig/Robinson returning.

So way too many holes to focus on only one or two spots.

If this team came out and played like we thought they would, I'd be all for trading up in this draft to fill holes. Now, it looks like we need to try to get as many picks as we can, and just continue to take BPA because the holes are a plenty. We need 2 corners, strong safety, inside backer, all OL, all DL, and I wouldn't be opposed to taking another RB in the mid rounds. Also wouldn't be opposed to taking a WR if a guy like Nabers drops to us in the first and trying to flip DJ.

I'd flip Najee also. Sign Barkley or Jacobs or literally anyone else. Or sign no one and just see what you have in Warren.

Barkley can't stay heathy, he has missed games pretty much every season. Sometimes for large portions. So if they sign him they need to have a good 3rd back as well. Najee isn't great but at least he has been available.

Jacobs is showing signs of breaking down. He is AVG 3.2 yards a carry this season. Najee can do that for far less money.

IMO, RBs are a dime a dozen. As I said when they picked Najee, it won't matter if the OL can't open holes. I'd rather they spend the high end capital on OL and other areas and then just pick a RB in the 4th-7th rounds or even just go the UDFA route.

If a team offers a 1st for Pickens, I probably do it. He is a lazy/bad route runner but still demands the ball and has an attitude about it evidently.

Please note I said a 1st. I want significant value because the raw talent and athleticism is obscene. But maybe we effectively trade him for a 1st round lineman, then test our drafting ability at WR in the 2nd-3rd. That has traditionally worked for us.

I could absolutely see adding to the group, but I’d be pretty hesitant to move either of Pickens or DJ in the offseason. Assuming they stick with Pickett, I just don’t love the idea of a Pickens/DJ, Rookie, Austin group in a potentially pivotal year. There’s just a lot of unknown there.

I think a new OC could utilize him better, but I haven’t been all that impressed with Austin yet to feel comfortable with him as a bigger contributor. And while they’ve had success drafting WR, they’ve also had plenty of misses.

I think Pickens in of himself is volatile, though. He is going to want to start putting up gaudy numbers on advance of trying to get paid.

But I do hear that a rookie WR is a risk. We missed with Washington recently.

I said this last off-season too and still agree.

Flip Najee for what? Swap 7th round picks with somebody? He has no value in a trade
I am not sure that he has no value. We aren't the only ones who have noted how awful the Steelers offensive play calling is and how limiting it is on their skill players. Yes, Najee has some issues, but I would bet that some team would gladly take a gamble on him if the Steelers cut bait and would give something for him.

Thing is I'm already mingling need with BPA when I'm predicting what'll happen, rather than just need. Should have been clearer about that.

Going by Brugler's midseason top 50 - he has zero S, ILB, or C in the top 32. There's one DT (and the heaviest Edge is 270 which to me says not really Steelers DL material, certainly not as an immediate impact guy, maybe that one guy but not the lighter guys).

And there's 8 OTs and 5 CBs.

I'm not saying the other positions don't matter (although I do think most of them matter less). But when you look at the talent available in the draft + ease of sourcing guys from outside the 1st round + impact it's having on the team, I think all signs point heavily to OT or CB at this stage.

Also - I don't see the need for a G, Seumalo/Daniels/Herbig isn't the OL's problem. And RBs hit the ground running quick, so I'd only replace Harris when gone. And there's neither of any position in the top 32 - no RBs in the top 50, highest G is a projected OT positional change at 33.

And re DL... have I missed something with Heyward? This is the first season in a long time he's missed serious time. He's been at a high level despite that age, will see if it continues.

Also, maybe I'm off base, but I feel like DL has the longest development arc in the NFL. I'll trust a rookie CB or OT over a DL.

Most of his value was already realized. He is getting older, in RB terms especially. We might get a 4th-5th.

Swift getting a 4th seems a good comparable, albeit Swift had gaudier stats and a cheaper cap hit.

I think the counter argument to make here is that you got Warren as an undrafted guy to begin with, so how hard is it to find an effective running back?

I think you could pretty easily find a solid starting RB with a 3rd rounder next year, just like they got Conner a few years back. There are a few top RBs who were taken in the 1st round, but it seems like the leading rushers in the league were mostly 2nd or 3rd round picks.

I didn't say that he would bring much. But he does have some value. I think slightly more than you are saying. Maybe a third.

Honestly I think a 4th is pretty accurate. It's the same exact thing that D'Andre Swift went for last year:

Swift was in the 4th year of his rookie deal when this trade happened.

Ya'll are insane if you think Harris is getting traded. He's Tomlin's prodigal son

It's the same likelihood that Jake gets traded.
