Maybe you shouldn't use that as an example when that draft (1999) was not facilitated by the previous GM (Colbert) or the current GM. I honestly don't understand how a draft that happened 24 years ago by a totally different group of people holds any relevance to this years draft.

Plus, if they had taken Kearse in the first round, there is a pretty decent chance they don't take Porter in the 3rd.

It was strictly an example of reaching and not taking the TRUE BPA vs an indictment of any regime. Their weighting system screwed this pick, and I fear this type of rubric persists to this day.

There are other examples of this (like the Bush thing) and obviously this isn't a Steelers only phenomenon.

The Steelers have always orchestrated their boards differently than they said they are this year. Colbert would create his board according to round, obviously position of need is going to rise to the top there.

I have read that Weidl puts his board together a bit differently and it is more conducive to being aggressive moving up and back. Colbert basically had 10-15 guys in each round and if one of those guys was there, he was going to take them.

Yeah from what I read, Weidl organizes his board by whether the player will be an immediate starter/eventual starter/role player or something like that.

Strict BPA makes sense in baseball or hockey when you’re pretty much not going to see any contributions from draft picks for years. But in football it makes a ton of sense to take need into consideration.

I get the notion that certain players end up being reaches because of positional need. What I contend is a fallacy is that there is a universal BPA at literally every draft slot.

I do think this is a draft where the Steelers don't need to chase team need, largely because I think the team has few truly urgent "have to do something" spots and so many "we could really use a guy" spots.

The only positions where they can't really use a guy as a starter are QB, RB and Edge. The only positions where I think they've really got to do something are ILB and CB and even that might go by the end of FA. I'd add DL but I think you're probably not going to get more that rotational help there anyway.

They've got a lot of ability to move up and down, be aggressive, and get a bunch of contributors. It would be nice if Khan's innovations are to take advantage of that rather than rigidly pursue his positions of need even if it involves some reaches.

Also re hockey - I'd probably post more about that stuff if I was more interested. Really down on giving the NHL my attention right now.

But beyond that, it really does feel like most users in the hockey threads don't want to know things and just want to complain over and over.

Addison on being drafted by the Steelers: "that would great, being reunited, would make the transition much easier. Come get me."

Pickett saying he wants the Steelers to draft him. And will try and convince them.

Players are just absurdly athletic these days. Some of the numbers I see posted from the combine are ridiculous.

Trading him makes so much sense for that franchise. They are probably the best drafting team in the league.

Problem there is it's a PR nightmare. I'm convinced it's the best thing to do for the franchise, but for DeCosta's job? I think that's a real good way for him to lose it.

All in all I'm happy this is a nightmare for them.

In typical Steelers fashion, the smoke is starting to show with Addison. If I were a betting man, I'd say he's going to be the guy. The storyline writes itself also - Burrow/Chase, Pickett/Addison.

In Addison's combine interview, he identified Clark Phillips as the toughest DB he played against. When a guy like Addison gives a corner props, you have to take him seriously.

Lukas Van Ness showed out. Right now they are saying he's a 4-tech (lines up directly over the OT instead of the outside of the OT like a Tuitt did). 4.6 speed, plays with incredible leverage. Could be a real difference maker in a defense like ours. I also think it wouldn't be out of order to say he could get bigger and stronger and be a 5 tech. What he lacks, we have the players (Watt/Highsmith) and coaching to fix.

I will also say, the NFL and ESPN in particular do an absolutely horrendous job of covering the draft. It's clear they put the resources forward necessary to cover it and nothing more than that. Back in the day at this point in the process they would have rankings and a lot of content pertaining to the draft outside of the combine stuff, and they just don't. What a money grab - they know that no matter what they will get hits and they treat it that way.

Another thing I'm finding interesting is that every single interview with Khan he talks about maximizing the team while Kenny is on a rookie contract and how much talent is in this draft. I wouldn't be shocked to see them try to get more picks in this draft somehow.

It's fascinating every year how far these guys can push the human body. Guys who are 240 pounds running in the 4.3's. Kancey and Van Ness at 280 running in the 4.6's. It's just absurd.

He is a dick, maybe not because of the prank, but he’s done some highly unethical shit.

The JPP stuff was as low as it gets. f***ing dumpster diving wormy little bitch.
Heard of the name. But know nothing about him. Can't say I really follow football though. Just the Steelers. So I don't know what the "JPP stuff" is, but I trust your judgment.

He very well might be a dick ( i dont really follow him very closely).

It just has nothing to do with the most milquetoast prank about the most vapid topic on earth.

Sorry… Jason Pierre Paul blew off his fingers with fireworks and the little weasel prick got his medical records and published his x rays on ESPN.

JPP sued and won:

He’s just a total dirtbag with a history of scumbag behavior.

Hence the Saul Goodman comment.

Him allowing front office NFL officials to basically write stories for him is just as egregious, IMO. He has no credibility.

Yep.

The Dalvin Cook stuff was lowlife shit to… doing a pal a favor. F integrity.

He’s had some highly questionable investments that he had to ‘step away’ from also when they were found out… That Boom Entertainment gambling shit and Pacific Pro League nonsense he shilled…

He’s just an all around sleazy dude that has no ethics.

Adebawore - Edge from Northwestern is an absolute beast.

I love Emmanuel Forbes. It'd be so nice having a ball hawking corner like him.
