Is Wright the guy they gushed over at the senior bowl? Sorry, I haven't paid attention much to anyone past the big names and obvious 1st rounders.
Yes. Wright is a favorite of the staff, for sure. From what he said though, they see him as a G.

To me, the guy they gushed about is Dawand Jones, the mammoth OT from OSU. Not saying they don't like Wright, it's just that there are multiple videos out there of Tomlin talkin it up with Dawand during the drills.

I do wonder if they may take him at 17. Then go with best of the CB/DT/DE at 32.

From The Athletic:

Inside Russell Wilson’s no-good year
The measurables were bad enough: Russell Wilson, a nine-time Pro Bowler, crumbled in his first year outside Seattle. A 5-12 record and frankly horrendous play made what many thought would be a good team into a laughingstock. And there was the $245 million contract on top of it.

Somehow, it was worse than that, according to a bombshell report this morning from Kalyn Kahler, Jayson Jenks and Mike Sando, who talked to more than 15 players, coaches and staffers for the story. The juicy details are eye-popping:
Before the trade, Wilson asked Seahawks ownership to fire head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider. The quarterback was convinced those two were hamstringing his chances for success. He even had a preferred coach in mind: Sean Payton. Days later, Seattle dealt Wilson to Denver.

There, Wilson installed his own support staff alongside Broncos personnel. Wilson had his own office too, which blurred the line between coach and player — in a bad way. Wilson even brought his own quarterback coach, Jake Heaps. Who was Wilson listening to? Heaps? Or Nathaniel Hackett, the head coach known for coaching QBs? And what about actual Broncos quarterbacks coach Klint Kubiak? It sounds like a disaster.

Wilson even asked offensive players to come into the facility on Tuesdays — the only day players have off during game weeks — for “state of the union” meetings, which usually included film sessions. Wilson and Heaps ran these meetings. Some players said they were helpful, while others thought they were weird.
Wilson did get his wish in one sense: Payton is the new Broncos head coach, and has already said Heaps and other Wilson staffers won’t have a significant presence inside the facility.

Seems like a reach for him at 17. So it'll probably happen. Which would be shame considering there's likely going to be a ton of value there if you go BPA.

I agree, it would be a reach when looking at the current pre-draft rankings. He should be available at 32 and possibly 49. But his size will be intriguing to teams and I could see a team in the late first round taking him, like Cincinnati or KC.

That doesn't mean I think the Steelers should reach on him. Honestly, I don't think they will. But I could see them taking him at 32. Which could technically be seen as a reach as well.

There are a lot of quality ILBs set to hit free agency this year which is good news for the Steelers. They should be able to fill that need pretty easily and not have to worry about it in the draft.

Yeah, Dawand Jones was the one I thought they were most excited about on OL - although most excited overall seemed to be that DL Benton.

Also I feel like I routinely see mocks where I dislike the BPA value at 17.

I like some of the WRs that might be around at that spot more than most people do.

I’m with you on this. Right now if like 6 or 7 guys are off the board by the time the Steelers pick, it seems like a trade down to the late first would net them a similar prospect to what they’d be picking up at 17 and an additional day two pick.

This draft is so weird because there are really good football players but from what I'm reading the rankings of prospects are much more widely disbursed this year than years past. I think we could see more teams this year mortgaging picks from next year and other teams wanting out of rounds totally because their boards aren't shaking out the way they needed to.

I fully expect this draft to have more draft pick trades than we've seen in a while.

We will see after the combine, but I still think a tackle prospect falls to us, or we get a guy falling in our lap that we had no business getting. I think what could be interesting is packaging 32 to get back up into the teens to get in the action...maybe land two high impact players, which would really help our cause.

Fair. I kinda forget about WRs as BPA because it feels like no chance they do that.

That said... hmm. I wouldn't be mad about Addison or Johnston there. But Johnston feels a tad raw and Addison, I guess I'd have to look more into his YAC ability.

Anyway, I'll amend what I said. When you take out the players that don't fit big positional needs, I find 17OA worrying in terms of BPA.

Kenny had 2 concussions this season odds are not good he plays all 17 games next year if you sign here you have a chance to play.

Yeah, but he has no prior history, right? It's not hugely greater odds than any QB he will be injured.

This isn't like getting to back up a perennial crock like Garoppolo (touch wood)

I like Johnson, mocks now have him going all over the place though. I expect that will settle down after the combine though. Doubt he's around at 17. I really really really like Smith-Njigba though. I think he'd be a great complement to Pickens if they both develop.

But I'm in the "deal DJ for as high of a pick as you can get for him and use that pick accordingly" camp so ...

Yeah, I'm not. Anything else apart, I don't see why anyone would give that high a pick for Johnson. Last season's got to be as good a way to kill trade value on an 18m WR as possible.

I know it is semantics but Johnson doesn’t cost 18mil the next two seasons. It’s 16.3 and 15.8.

And second, he wouldn’t cost that with a new team. The cap hit for the new team would be 8mil and 10mil.

But again, I’m firmly in the do not trade camp unless they get great value.

Ah, many thanks. I swear I'll never understand NFL cap hits in trades. Although now I'm looking, I see Steelers Depot lists is at 10.5 and 10m? Not that said bit is hugely important.

It is different enough that I can see a team offering great value... but that only happens if another couple of teams out there fall in love with him and bid aggressively. Which is out of the team's control. I can't see teams getting nuts if they think the Steelers want to move him.

Anyway, I'm with you. It'd have to be great value.

Does anyone else almost despise talking hockey here anymore? I only come for the football talk.

It's the other way around for me but hockey was always #1.

The 2 headed cancer cells of Rooney Tunes and Tomlin had completely sapped my interest in the NFL the last few years before I moved to Florida. When I moved here it was easier to get into Tampa. Im still a Steelers fan but having another local team to root for regained my interest in the NFL. The Bucs are going back to being the Yucs I think this year but at least there is fluidity and change (operating like a normal NFL team) where I know I don't have to look at the same thing with the same result every year.

Its actually nice to not have to look at bug eyes every Sunday and Rooney Tunes give the same tape recorded speech every year.

I can't really understand how Tomlin and Rooney Tunes don't make you want to rip your hair out at this point with some of you like it's making me want to rip mine.

I’ve only been active with trade deadline approaching. Otherwise it’s pretty much been in here.

Being that we both have been posting here for a really long time, I'm sure 10 years ago we were the same way some of these posters are, but it's just the land of group think and piling up on a few specific people. I remember a lot of guys who used to post here, specifically in the mid-2000's that I loved talking hockey with, and all of a sudden one day they just fell away and never came back. I'm kind of there. If not for this thread, I'd probably be there already.

I like hearing this from Khan.

All I can say is that is a relief. Khan thus far has been a breath of fresh air and it started with that Claypool traded. If we had Colbert still, Claypool is a Steeler.

We really need to hit on this draft to shift into another gear next season.

On the surface, we should be able to get really good value for DJ because the WR class is labeled as being so weak. The NFL is weird though. You can have a player like DJ and only get a 5th round pick for him.

I find myself browsing more than I used to instead of posting. 18 years here, dude. Half my life haha.

Pretty serious news on Jalen Carter. It could totally shake up the draft.
