Part of the reason I said Gonzalez is that I don't expect any of the top 3 OT to be there.
I would say there's a better chance one of the top 3 OT are there than Gonzalez being there.

I will be cheering for QBs to be taken early and often, best case scenario all four QBs are gone before we pick at 17, and at that point there will be plenty of good options left on the board. Brian Bresee being healthy will also be a big boost for us.

I've seen way more mocks lately with Witherspoon/Porter/Smith going before Gonzalez. Along with all 3 OTs and tons of QBs.

And I've seen plenty where Skoronski and Jones are still available. I guess it's where you look.
This one done today has JPJ, Gonzalez, Skoronski, and Jones available still.

Probably not worth much but hypothetically I would prefer an OT over a CB if they're still available.

Since we're talking it, is it just me or is Pittsburgh an unattractive spot to be a backup right now?

I presume backup QBs are looking for places where they have a chance of playing and playing well, because that keeps them in the league and increases their chance of getting a Geno Smith redemption arc. I also imagine they like money and winning environments.

Well... Steelers project to be a muddy middle team, so not first choice for a winning environment. Almost definitely no chance of getting your ring next season. Pickett would have to shit the bed massively to not play if fit. The team is probably one of the most conservative offences in the league right now.

We keep throwing out well known backups who won't cost what Trubisky will. But everyone wants them. Why would they come here?

Why is your biggest concern the backup QB?

They'll probably find someone half-decent who likes money or resign Mason. They'll also probably draft one in the 7th round like they always do.

Actually I think the opposite of the bolded.

KP appeared in like 13 out of 17 games (partly bc of MT starting beginning of the season). If memory serves correct he was knocked out of 2 of those due to concussions.

So if you're a backup, it's likely that you'll get a few games to start. Plus, we all assume KP will IMPROVE on last season. Well there's been a ton of QB's who have a sophomore slump, so the opportunity could come via that route too

Agree, they're all over the place. I especially like the ones where the Colts trade into #1OA to draft a QB that will almost assuredly be there at 4.

Because someone is willing to pay them millions of dollars for holding a clipboard.

I honestly don't care who the backup is, I just don't want them to spend 11 mil on one. Kenny is the starter period, if he is healthy he plays. If he isn't healthy, then so be it, suck and get a better pick.

IMO, most backups are the same. And once they are expunged from the starter ranks and enter the backup stage of their career, they don't become anything. When you are signed as a backup, you should have no expectations of starting/playing, none, zero.

Nobody with the ambition, self-belief, and work ethic needed to become an NFL quarterback is going to accept this. If they aren't looking at every team as an opportunity to get back onto the field at some point in some way, then they don't have what it takes to stay ahead of the guys who are.

Between that, and the fact there's 31 other teams looking for a backup too, why would they pick us unless we're grossly outbidding other teams?

I do not understand the Anton Harrison love. I have read/watched a lot of his scouting reports, and he looks and reads like Dan Moore. He gets blown back at the college level. He's going to get destroyed in the pros and some outlets have him as a first rounder. I have to be missing something.

In regards to backup QB - Where is a prime Charlie Batch when you need him?

A lack of left tackles

I don't get it either. I see a lot of places talking up his athleticism, the production... but they all say he shouldn't start his 1st year. Guys who can't start aren't 1st round OTs.

I haven’t watched his tape but he’s supposed to be a very good pass blocker, if not the best in the class, with great feet.

His weakness is apparently run blocking and not being mean enough

I’ve seen several reputable sites rank him ahead of Jones, so who knows.

I’m not good at evaluating O-line so whatever.

If they can’t get one of the top 3 guys, the best move may just be to take someone like Wright at 32 and move Chuks to LT.

What you mentioned about this being a weaker class may end up being the case. I feel like there are a lot of guys being touted as first rounders that I just don’t quite get.

So you think that whoever the Chiefs decide to hire to be the backup for Mahomes should have an expectation of starting and playing?

Backup QBs have no expectations, if the season goes well and the starter stays healthy they will not play a meaningful down. That is the job. They know that when they sign the contract. The prime example of this is Chase Daniel, dude has made 43 million dollars in his 13-14 year career and has started 5 games and has like 250 total pass attempts. He makes 2-4 mil a season just holding a clipboard.

Tyler heinecke said being a backup Qb is the best gig in football. Batch made a career out of being a backup. Chad henne got 2 SBs because he was a backup in KC.
Most the backups are recyled failed 1st round picks.

I mean, I get that part, but this is a guy who is going to get destroyed if he starts. Put him against Highsmith or Watt, and they would be eating his lunch all game long.

Harrison's ability to hold up to power rushes is borderline unplayable by NFL standards based on his 2022 tape. He'll be in a quarterback's lap every play. The good news is that we already saw a stark improvement from 2021 to 2022, and he's on the record saying he's working on it.

It reads just like Moore. I don't know...feet and agility are great, but if the guy gets ragdolled he can be the most agile guy on the field and it won't matter.

I would absolutely take Wright. He is at worst a Pro Bowl caliber guard.

Which is why most good back-ups are looking for situations where they don't think the starting QB might have a bad season or is injury prone or whatever other reason will get them back onto the field. If they take a no chance situation like Kansas, it's probably because they believe in the coach to improve them and give them a better shot in a competitive scenario.

Sure, I guess there's some guys who just want money and a chance to wear some rings in return for doing nothing, who've accepted it's not them... But we can't offer those guys a chance of a ring.

And we can't offer the ambitious guys much of anything either.

Which returns me to my original point - what have the Steelers got to offer a back up that the other teams can't? And as such, does it seem likely we'll be picking from the bottom of the barrel unless we overpay?

Is Wright the guy they gushed over at the senior bowl? Sorry, I haven't paid attention much to anyone past the big names and obvious 1st rounders.

Why did Teddy’s sign a 1 year deal in Miami to back up tua. He knew starting gigs were off the table but he would possibly play cause of Tua injury history. Dalton signed to backup up for the Saints and he played a ton. Tryod taylor has extended his carrer by becoming a back up. He got 11/2 to back up DJ for the giants. Darnold got 7 million to back up in Carolina and played once they dumped Baker. Wilson is going to make 9 million if he is the backup for the jets next year

My question wasn't why do guys sign back-up gigs full stop. That one is obvious.

The question was how appealing is our back-up gig out of all the gigs available, because it looks like not very.

Renner at PFF had him ranked 3rd in late Dec:
Harrison has the uncoachable smoothness that you can’t help but admire from a 300-plus-pounder. He moves like an NBA power forward with feet, body and hands perfectly in sync. That helped him surrender only nine pressures on 447 pass-blocking snaps this season, and he had been seeing time at left tackle ever since his true freshman year in 2020.

WalterFootball:
Given the passing-driven NFL, teams are always looking for potential elite left tackles. It can be very difficult to find left tackles with Harrison's natural size and athleticism, so those things make him an intriguing prospect for the next level.

Harrison is a natural pass blocker who has quick feet that allow him to get depth in his drop and neutralize speed rushers. He should be an asset to take on the fast edge rushers because he is quick out of his stance and reacts immediately to cut off the corner and prevent rushers from running the loop around the edge. With his quick feet and ability to bend at the knee, Harrison doesn't have to reach after rushers and is not a waist bender. Harrison uses his length well to tie up rushers and does a very good job of sustaining his blocks. For the NFL, Harrison could be a very valuable to protect his quarterback against fast edge rushers

Who knows… I’m not great at evaluating the O-line and after the big three these guys are ranked all over the place.

I mean, I get that part, but this is a guy who is going to get destroyed if he starts. Put him against Highsmith or Watt, and they would be eating his lunch all game long.

I guess the thing with Harrison is if he makes the improvements, he could be quality. Pure profile reading, but he profiles as a better athlete with a higher ceiling than Moore.

But, in any case, I agree with you. I don't think he should be high. If we miss the first three OTs, I'm okay with pivoting to picking IOLs, or maybe a RT. Grab a swing tackle late on that can maybe develop.

edit:

p.s. Trubisky is currently off training with Pickett and the other Steelers receivers. Doesn't mean a whole ton but in terms of projecting backups, he's still acting like that'll be his role next season.

To get one of the big three OT, I highly suspect Steelers will need to leapfrog Jets and NE… Titans need a LT and Houston has a shit ton of picks thanks to Cleveland being Cleveland.

So not sure how likely they will be able to move up to 11 or 12 without offering their original second.
