Willis to me was the type of guy we could have drafted like 4-5 years ago. Ben still here and getting a project to see what he can turn into. If he sucks, just move on.

In our current situation? No thanks.

Steelers drafted a couple raw running QBs in Dixon and Dobbs. Both guys moved on without finding any sustained success in the NFL.

In a few years we will all know what the right move was, but maybe both guys bust or both do well - who knows.

People may find this odd, but my biggest concern with KP isn’t anything I’ve seen on the extensive amount of film I’ve watched on him.

It’s the fact I can’t recall any team ever losing a franchise guy and drafting a legit successor that same spring.

Guys like Young and Rodgers were already on the roster for a couple seasons when Montana and Favre moved along.

So I have this weird concern it’s never been done before…

Maybe Andrew Luck - just thought of him….

Just all the good stuff I keep seeing on film… I dunno… sometimes gets undermined by the thought of how incredibly rare and lucky the Steelers would have to be to find their next guy the same spring Roth retired.

Are you talking guys who specifically retired? The Chargers lost Rivers to Indy in free agency and then drafted Herbert

No, just moved along - Ie Montana went to KC and Favre retired then went to Minny? - can’t remember with him.

Basically a franchise QB retired or moved along and that same spring they found a franchise type guy via the draft to replace him off the bat.

So Herbert is a good example.

Think Ravens went from Flacco to Jackson.

So Luck, Herbert, Jackson…

Guess there are at least a few examples, which is more than I thought there was.

Then you have the Jets and Bears who have been trying to find a franchise QB since I was a little kid.

Favre retired then came back and went to the Jets…then retired again and the came back and went to the Vikings. That whole saga with him was unreal lol. Also if I remember correctly, Manning left the Colts, then they played a season and then they drafted Luck the following draft so I’m not sure he fits what you are looking at. To your point there aren’t really a ton of examples of it happening in the same offseason

Manning didn't leave the Colts I thought. It was that he had a disc in his neck that required surgery so he was out the whole year in which they tanked.

The odds of drafting a future HOF player to replace a future HOF player at any position is quite rare. QB especially. If Pickett turns out to be in a Tannehill tier that’d be decent

I think the best case is Carr and the worst case is Tua.

I say Tua as worst case because he does just enough to stick around even when you should get someone better.

I think Manning was still there, just not playing because of the neck surgery - so I guess a little grey area there.

I’ll have to look that up and see…

If he was playing, doubt they would have tanked so hard and gotten Luck.

Either way, I think my original point of replacing a franchise QB via the draft the same spring rarely happens.

So hence my concern when I think about the chances of it happening.

Not likely he’s another franchise guy based on the odds, but I guess if KP wins a playoff game any time soon, that will actually be something that rarely happens in Pgh to so…

Jackson was already on the Ravens. They started off 4-5 with Flacco and then Jackson came in and went 6-1. So they moved on from Flacco in the offseason.

Yeah, he missed an entire year because of his neck. They were terrible which put them in a position to draft Luck. I'm not exactly sure when they did it, but they cut Manning. I guess technically maybe Manning was still on the roster when they drafted Luck, but I think it was a foregone conclusion when they knew they had the #1 pick.

It's so weird to think that Luck is still only 32 years old.

Yeah it’s definitely a rare instance for sure. It’s why I’m glad I was wrong about Herbert. I didn’t expect this out of him so I’m very relieved lol

It’s a damn shame he isn’t playing anymore. Imagine how good the Colts would be with him

I was thinking about how Jackson came in during the middle of the season and shit and didn’t even think about how Flacco could be there still.

I was thinking it was some stop gap guy for some reason.

Recently, right? Ask some other teams that don't have 6 super bowl wins how often they won playoff games over the years.

I remember it because the week before Jackson's first start I had an interview with some schmuck from Baltimore so I had to pretend to be interested in Lamar f'ing Jackson. It was not worth it. I did not get the gig.

Ya, whataboutism works so well here.

Steelers are on the worst run for (lack of) playoff wins in 50 years… “hey the Jets suck - so we should be glad we aren’t the Jets!”

Standard is the standard, but apparently the standard is not winning playoff games, or holding coaches accountable.

Not anymore it’s not. The new standard is “no losing seasons”

Just got blown out in the playoffs again… it’s ok because “We aren’t the Jets!”

No playoff wins in five years… all good baby, “We aren’t the Jets!”

And when the roosters are crowing and the cows are spinning circles in the pastures.. “We aren’t the Jets!”

Chris Simms asked Sauce Gardner who was the most difficult receiver he ever covered in college was, and he said Calvin Austin III.

Don’t know how much this matters, but the Steelers will be covering the fewest miles among all NFL franchises next season. They are scheduled to travel 6,442 miles and will not be leaving the Eastern Time Zone even once. The Steelers will be hosting any team located in other time zones next season.
