My economist brain is also saying that Addison got...overpaid? Obviously there isn't yet a full read on value in this sport with the NIL yet, but you are just getting a WR for one year. Crucially, does he put you over the top? What is the value of USC making the playoff? Winning the champ? And how much realistically does a single WR increase those odds? Best in mind that the playing field of college sports is already unfair to begin with. USC will have better talent than most teams they are playing against regardless.

I could see this for a QB (e.g., the newest Manning) or for like Zion Williamson at Duke because in basketball who your best player is is paramount. But for a WR, 1 year, $3M? Cui Bono?

On tampering, the NCAA may want to ensure there aren't gambling links. Say a bunch of people place huge bets on USC winning the Chip, then this happens? Or say you had a prop bet that a USC WR would win the Belitnikoff, then you paid for Addison. It's weird man

Rumor is their QB has an NIL deal worth 2.5 million. So Addison is overpaid if you just base it off of that. And from what I’ve read, they aren’t really lacking talent at the receiver position so Addison doesn’t really turn a weakness into a strength.

Obviously having Addison is better than not having Addison, but it seems like they’re just doing this because they can do it. It’s crazy.

3 million to get the best WR in the college and increase my chances at winning it’s a no brainer

Here's the thing and all can be true:

1) The NFL is racist in its promotion and hiring practices
2) This lawsuit/Flores/others isn't the smoking gun everyone thinks it is. The suit reads it was done by a 1st year law student and there's a ton of presumption going on.
3) Arbitration performed by Goodell himself is very biased.

They need more than what is presented to win.
I've seen how the NFL reprimanded the Washington team and Pats and I know there's an issue, in regards to race, there definitely is one. The fact that Aaron Rodgers pulled his shit without getting the same treatment as black players is a big one too. I want this to open all the f***ing doors on how they've handled things.

I've noticed race related things make this board very uncomfortable, I am not shocked by it. But it's unfortunately very noticeable and mate I'm not saying you so no worries.

I appreciate that. I have no problems talking about race since I'm in HR lol

NFL (like most major sports leagues) is a very old boys club. That club is full of rich white people...you know where I'm going with this.

That being said I don't think the Miami owner was racist. I believe if a white coach didn't tank, he too would have been fired for not playing ball.

In short, don't conflate racism with stupid business practices.

Note that I do think that black coaches get a shorter leash across the league vs white. So there is a problem, but not 1 that's going to be solved/addressed with this lawsuit. This suit is gonna get tossed quite quickly methinks.

Yeah the Addison situation blows but no 20 year kid is going to turn down the chance to get that kind of money and play at USC. The shitty part is how it went down. There’s pretty clearly some tampering but nothing will come from it.

It just sucks for teams like Pitt. They’re almost never going to get the top recruits, but they could become competitive by developing players. Now these teams are just going to turn into minor league programs for the Alabamas of the world.

I think some local media guys are already starting a bit of a smear campaign too about how Addison was a bit of a diva and his teammates don’t really care that he’s gone.
The college system will be gone as you see it by the mid 2030s (the Notre Dame AD is already talking about it). The gap between the haves and have nots is accelerating. There is no leadership in the NCAA to make any real changes and the greed is good motto will end up blowing up in the players faces as there will be a team contraction at the highest level. Expect a super league with a small handful of teams. Viewer apathy has already set in and it will only get worse.

The NCAA will try some BS band-aids like expanding the playoffs to more teams. It won't work.

The NCAA could cap the NIL. Tie it to a % of program revenues. Hell, audit the businesses giving out the deals. Random audit - did your business really get its money's worth paying Jordan Addison $3M?

Man I was so absolutist about "the NCAA should pay football and basketball players" but it went from 0 to...this...really freaking fast. To where now I'm rethinking my entire priors on it.

Re: Devin Bush. I heard some sports talk chatter about us not picking up his option - good - but no one seems to be making the linkage to Edmunds. It's as simple as "if you're just decent and we still have a positional need, it isn't going to break the bank to get ya back." How much money did they save on not picking up that option and just paying him $2.5M now?

It’s not typically Colbert’s MO, and they drafted guys at both of these positions, but there is so much depth in the UFA market in RB and WR, I hope he takes a long look.

That wouldn't change much. Still free transfers and schools would just pay both over and under the table to procure players. The bag man would still operate in the shadows.

Just call a spade a spade. They are employees and not students. Look at the portal numbers and you will see that they are changing schools like people change underwear. Provide a educational benefit that's not hard tied to a certain school (a modified model based on the CHL's). Players can chose to use the educational benefit or not. Extract the player from the school and fake eligibility based on going to "college". You now can now have player drafts and start to level the playing field as teams own player rights. Players can still make money off of NIL.

The NFL should be made to play development fees too. Why are they getting off scot free? The college teams are doing the majority of all the players development for the NFL.

No- he's a relative of Tomlin. It's obvious

I mean if the Dolphins wanted Canada to coach up Tua fine. To me this sounds like he's just a QB coach and should'nt be a coordinator of any kind whether NCAA or NFL

Its probably better Pickett sits out this year since Canada is liable to get this kid killed at some point. He has no clue how to run an offense and likely no clue how to design a protection scheme.

Maybe we should just start Mason the first couple of games to protect Trubisky. I hate to form ideas like this but when you have a Clown running the show, bad things tend to happen.

I asked this question elsewhere and the answer was "He's the captain of special teams so he's not going anywhere."

They wanted Canada to be the oc. He wasn’t brought into work with Ben you weren’t changing the spots on that old dog. He was brought in to get this offense into the 21 Century. I don’t think Pickett is starting week 1 anyway he will enter camp QB3 and see how it Develops.

Peter King in Ravens war room says Steelers plucked Ravens guy… not sure if that’s good or bad seeing as how bad Ravens are at evaluating WR:

A middle-round receiver, Calvin Austin III of Memphis, a smurfy guy who runs a 4.32 40, was Baltimore’s target here. Guess who else runs a 4.32? Hollywood Brown. Though Austin’s a small guy, he was durable at Memphis, playing 49 games in four years and averaging 16.3 yards per catch. Baltimore’s not a deep-throwing team—thus Brown’s frustration, leading to his trade request, and the trade to Arizona—but the Ravens could use speed depth.

Austin wasn’t a must-have. But he was the next target. He was Baltimore’s guy.

Then, over the tinny speaker, news that the Steelers were picking wide receiver Calvin Austin, Memphis.

“Gotta be kidding me,” someone blurted out as the Ravens began to process it.

But ultimately what you're talking about, making NCAA Football (and Basketball) minor-league developmental programs destroys money and earning opportunity for tons of people - athletes and communities - around those sports. Like, dude, the Altoona Curve play 20 minutes away from Penn State football yeah? Do you think there is a single human being on Earth who is as big of an Altoona Curve fan as the average Penn State fan cares about Penn State?

It's tied into someone's school which is a part of their identity. That is why there is so much money and interest. You can't deliberately destroy that spitefully. However, implicit in that identity is the notion that these athletes came there to experience your school, to represent you. When you start seeing multimillion dollar deals going there, it kind of breaks the psychological veneer. It all fades away. I hated the NCAA for years but maybe, just maybe their derpy-piggish solution to this was the right one all along. Players getting paid $3M for a year just destroys any facade that the football is connected to the college. It cheapens the sport. This Addison thing is going to be a landmark case.

There's a middle ground to be found here where the NCAA allows these players to be paid while turning off the mercenary-for-hire line. We may see a contract-like setup where players aren't able to go to the transfer portal without consequence, maybe lose a portion of their earnings or a year of eligibility. Maybe set it up so a trade has to happen between the two schools to avoid a portion of the FBS becoming defacto feeder schools for bigger programs. And also cut out boosters and such contacting players already committed to and playing for other schools.

Improved to what though? I'd agree it looks better than it did, but it can still be quite a bit better and still be a problem.

Not entirely sure how quickly Pickens and Austin will be big contributors either.

I like the potential but it feels like it could easily be a pretty bad situation. Which arguably covers every position unit on the team other than Kicker...

Improved what? We can start at C and RG. Mason Cole and James Daniels are massive upgrades, in both running and pass blocking, to Green and Turner. Chuks is what he is - a very average RT, but Moore Jr, if he is a legit NFL player should be markedly better his sophomore season. We have some serious burst at WR now with Pickens and Austin - YAC guys who can turn nothing plays into something.

The only massive hole before the offseason that is still a hole is CB. Everything else has kind of been filled. Jack is way better than Schobert. We signed some competition for Edmunds. The WR corps is better. The OL is better. We need a nose tackle. That is the glaring need along with CB.

Didn’t you ever question why Canada keeps moving around so much if he’s such a brilliant offensive mind?

Remember when he was college footballs highest paid OC at LSU?

Then halfway through the season Orgeron took away his play calling duties, then got rid of him and called the hiring a “mistake”.

Dude was completely out of football a couple years ago, ala Todd Haley.

Then his next chance to run an offense, he heads up a historically bad offense for the Steelers.

So let’s not act like there aren’t red flags following this guy around - and he’s had ZERO success at the NFL level to boot.

Exactly why should we feel good about him again?
Matt Canada is going to prove to be a mistake, I'm confident in that. The beauty of this is we have literally drafted guys to fit his system. If this fails, it's because of him. The downside is...we fit guys to fit into his system, so the next OC has to have similar leanings as him or this roster is in a world of hurt.
