Slightly veering off topic, but I don't think you can undersell just how tough some of the QB's back then were

If you read some of the books that Parcells and Buddy Ryan wrote- they outright say that if they didn't win the game, their intention was to pound the shit out of the opposing QB to send a message for their next meeting

I’m not underselling old school QBs as much as I’m giving credit to modern day running QBs for their toughness.

Remember in ‘78? Lambert said QBs should “all wear dresses/skirts” which was a misogynistic way of saying QBs back then weren’t tough enough.

So doesn’t really matter which era, there will always be people who think QBs lack toughness and are golden boys, etc.

Yea I think you might have misread the intention of my post. Not disagreeing with anything you posted.

I do think it's easier to be a QB nowadays vs back then. Manning and Brady had very long careers due to modern QB protections.

This is why I've always had such respect for Ben: he could have played back in the day.
Manning and Brady would've been broken in half.

Sorry if I've hijacked your discussion.

Honestly, I think Manning and Brady would have been fine. They grew up and played in an era when QBs could still get destroyed and a penalty would not be called. They just may not have had the same length of career.

But yah never know, Blanda played til he was like 50. Deberg continued to play to his late 30's. There are QBs of every era that seem to last longer than others.

Lambert’s threshold for toughness is much higher than most. Keep in mind this quote would have been questioning their toughness given the rules for hitting the QB that existed when he made the comment. They are even more restrictive now. Imagine how Lambert must think of today’s QBs, if he were to decide to care.

I'm a Bengals fan. I literally think it's completely impossible to have too many good offensive linemen.

I wonder if the Steelers entertain trading down, given their needs. Obviously if they're going QB they're not trading down though.

Mathieu and Minka would be a nasty combo in the secondary.
True, and the Steelers OL still isn't great. It just went from absolutely abysmal to solid with their signings. Could still stand to be upgraded and bump some guys down the depth chart.

Trading down would be great, but it takes 2 to tango.

Yes. Yes it would. Wouldn't mean shit if the front 7 can't stop the run, though. Hopefully (for our sake) Alualu and Tuitt come back strong.

Casey Hampton was the only time they've traded down.

I'm on record as saying I don't think any of the QB's are worth a 1st round pick
Next years class is a different story

Rebuild the Oline and Dline. Then get your QB

I could talk myself into Pickett or Corral this year I think.

And I agree and disagree on next years class. I’m not going to pretend to be an expert and it’s tough to predict what could happen a year from now, but right now it definitely looks better for teams that are going to be drafting in the top 5. I’m expecting the Steelers to be drafting in a similar range as they are this year though so I really don’t think the quality of QBs available to them will be all that different.

As of now, next year looks like you have Stroud and Young as top 3 picks and then a bunch of guys who may or may not have good years.

Easier to get your guy without moving up much though if the first two QB hungry teams go after Stroud and Young early and you're targeting the 3rd or 4th QB off the board rather than 1st or 2nd, right? Maybe?

Does anyone have any hot takes on the Western Kentucky QB Bailey Zappe? He’s likely a backup caliber player in the NFL, but definitely an intriguing prospect.

Yeah I think it would make it easier to draft a QB but I think you’re still looking at choosing from the Pickett/Willis/Corral tier. And I think the idea of taking guys like them is what some people aren’t really fans of.

I think if the top 5 guys for next year were available in this years draft that they would be ranked 1-5. That isn't to say they all will be a franchise QB. I just think they would be considered a better talent.

But we never know, Spencer Rattler was going to win the Heisman and be the top pick in the draft and he had a horrible season, was replaced and then transferred to a different school.

So why wasn't there any whining and complaining about the OT rule when the Steelers lost to Tebow 10 years ago?
Probably because the Bills are a history-laden and lynchpin franchise for the league and the Steelers are just a nice club with spotty success.

It’s funny Ben Brady Manning Brees Maholmes all lost a Ot playoff game and didn’t see the ball but now the fans complaining about Allen changed it

I honestly think they take PIckett. It's so "Steelers." They will talk about how he knows the city and the facilities and the staff and all the other stuff. I'm not 100% against them taking a QB in round 1, it's just not my preference...especially with the guys there this year.

The crop seems so much deeper next year.

I'm of the exact same mindset. I'd actually try to build this thing around Trubisky. Is he the answer? Probably not, but f***, let's see. He's a top 5 pick, he is still really young, he has intangibles, and he has skill. If he fails, at least we will know it was him who was a failure and not the team.

There are probably too many QBs this year for them to not take one, unfortunately. They’d probably take Ridder if Willis, Pickett, Howell, and Corral are gone.

On paper, Ridder makes the most sense for the Steelers. I just never came away impressed and I watched a good bit of him. I was waiting to see him absolutely dominate and take over, and every game I saw was littered with poor throws and reads.

It is Pickett or bust for me because of the Pitt angle. If he falls you grab him. Otherwise you need way too much and Trubisky pulling a Tannehill is more likely than these dudes succeeding.

We should get Honey Badger too.

There are a few things going for Pickett to Pittsburgh - he'd literally be walking into a situation he's already familiar with, he knows the city, field, weather and everything else that goes along with playing here. A lot of "rookie" things would be removed for him if the Steelers drafted him reducing the risk of failure.

I'm just not a huge Pickett fan. I can't get excited for a RS Senior tearing it up. He was so average up until that point.
