Also have the Steelers ever had a really good tackle? It seems like everyone for as long as I can remember has either been average to a little above average.

Jon Kolb, though I'm aware that's from back in the Paleolithic Era when dinosaurs roamed the earth so Kolb may not count.

Maybe I'm being harsh and ignorant but it feels like Claypool is trending towards being a 3WR and we could use a 2.
Apart from TD's, his stats were very similar to his rookie season and that's with all the other factors (O-line play, new OC, QB play, JuJu missing most of the year, etc.). Getting a 1WR or 2WR to bump Claypool to 3WR would be squarely in the 'upgrade' category, not 'need' IMO.

Claypool’s play dropped even though his stats were similar and was unlikely to duplicate his TD rate. That said I feel like he and DJ both profile as at least 1b/2a types and are fine as the 1 and 2.

I’m probably in the minority that I think it’d be nice to be able to bring JuJu back (again).

If the Steelers FO people were smart, and in charge of player personnel decisions (they aren't, Tomlin has been running the show for years), this would be a draft attacking the OL and DL, both great pools of talent in this crop of prospects.

Why?

1. It's easily in the conversation for worst QB class in the last 20 years, on paper. I don't see a single legitimate 1st round talent based on this year's performance other than Pickett and he's a late 1st rounder IMO.

2. The Steelers have weapons. Harris showed he's a borderline, 3 down elite back. Yeah the YPC sucked, but part of that was the disastrous OL play, namely in the run game, and if Harris follows the Bell curve, physically speaking, he'd be wise to trim a few pounds off his body, and gain a step of quickness. DJ had a hellova rebound year. Yeah, late season drops popped up, but the whole season was very good. He's young. JuJu is surely gone but Claypool will be back and hopefully looks more like the rookie version. Patty F had a damn good year at TE and is a legit threat in the receiving game. He's got top 5 TE potential in the league. You could do a lot worse than Pittsburgh in terms of young, cost controlled weaponry.

3. What is missing on offense right now, besides a legit starter at QB? OL talent. This draft has a lot of it. Don't be stupid. You can add in the first 3 rounds, 2 legitimate starting caliber players.

4. Cam Heyward is old, by any standard. We still have no difference maker in the middle of the line, and Tuitt, may or may not come back, and even if he does, can he stay on the field? Having better talent on the DL, especially players who can make a difference 3, 4, 5 years from now, are needed. Cam can't play forever, and your run defense starts in the trenches.

5. Still plenty of quality DB's in FA. Sign 1, hell sign 2. Lord knows Tomlin can't pick a DB to save his life, but hey, what do I know. Only have 15+ years of track record.

Given we traded away multiple mid round picks, I'd love a trade down in round 1, even out of round 1 completely, draft OL, DL, ILB in some combination over the first 3 rounds. Build the damn team through the draft and FA this year, so that after Trubisky has the meh season we all know he will, you theoretically have more talented for a QB in 2023's class, which can't possibly be worse than this years class.

Just because you need a QB doesn't mean you go and waste draft capital in a piss poor draft market.

It's weird how similar are thoughts are on the business of sports. Given what's just happened:

There should be quality ILB's available throughout the 3rd & 4th rounds IMO. I really like the 2nd and 3rd rounds in this draft @ WR, OL, DB, LB, & DL - in that order. Most of the real talent on the interior DL goes between picks 15 and 45 IMO. Then it's a significant drop off.

Hence looking at League-wide needs as of yesterday, along with the Steelers' and projecting what will likely be available, I'm prioritizing NT or DE before pick 52.

I'm seeing WR/DB/OL @ 52, then add ILB @ 84 & 138. And someone that we need will fall to the late 4th in this draft, guaranteed.

The nice thing about the way the Steelers have this set up now is that outside of DL there's really no desperate needs IMO. And there should be good interior DL available through pick 45 or so in this draft.

But.... Unless someone falls, I believe this is the year to trade down from 20. Would love to do a deal with the Lions - somewhere along the lines of 20+238 for 32 & 34.

32, 34, 52, 84, & 138 could really help get our Steelers headed toward contention again if they pick well and figure out the QB thing.

Juju is a fine player and I would love to have him back

People want Gilmore but he's 31 and not worth the investment at that age. I'd love to steal Rasul Douglas from GB. 26 and he was an absolute stud down the stretch for them. We add another CB and I'll feel better about them not picking one in the first few rounds.

They need to hammer OL/DL in the draft regardless. Build the trenches up, let Trubisky run the team for a year and then look for a QB in 2023. Whoever you bring in will have a slew of talent around them and hopefully a better than average, if not outright good OL.

If the Steelers could trade 20 into say - 32 & 34 - I love the idea of getting 3 linemen @ 32, 34, & 52. I could see going DE, DT, OL with those 3 picks.

I like some of the Guard/Tackles such as Kinnard, Salyer, & Smith to be there @ 52.

Banner released. Cap savings.

What they saw in him I have no idea. This team did a shitty job with the oline during a big chunk of Ben's career. They were very fortunate Villy turned into a solid LT. Banner isn't the first guy they paid a lot of money for very little talent on the oline but he might be the worst. Hopefully the recent signings and draft picks are a big step forward although Green hasn't looked that way yet.

He got hurt? And id hardly call 5 mil base a lot of money. I mean he might have still sucked but he beat out Chuks before he blew out his knee

Before schobert release I think it was around 13, none of the people they signed have a hit above 5 mil for next season. It’s pretty incredible.

Steelers re-signed CB Ahkello Witherspoon to a two-year contract.
The big-bodied Witherspoon, acquired by Pittsburgh via trade from Seattle in 2021, will return as a likely rotational member of the team's secondary. He started three games and appeared in nine games for the Steelers last year, recording three interceptions and nine passes defended.
