Good lord, the copium.

There's nothing inconsistent with the idea that Tomlin is going to act normally, act positively with problem players. That he's going to bring a lot of positive energy to guys he thinks reacts better to an arm around the shoulders than a clout around the ear, or that he's going to be a lot more positive about players in public than he is in private. This isn't a strong refutation.

For the idea it isn't made up -

Three different journalists have said words to this effect (DeFabo floated the idea he could be traded as part of a culture change before Kaboly and Pauline even started reporting the Steelers were listening to offers)

It is consistent with previous reports of bad behaviour

And it is consistent with the Steelers opting to deal him for what everyone acknowledges isn't a great price.

The guy wanted out and the Steelers were happy to oblige as he was acting the maggot. Is that hard to believe?
I mean after reading about the cb we got it seems like they offered him a similar contract he chose Carolina so they like him

Agree. I'm just wondering if the new guy is better than Kazee?
Not really he is a dime backer who played for Bmore before they drafted Hamleton

Do they have that much cap when you account for an in-season cushion and rookies though?

I feel like any big splashes to come would have to be paid for by restructures. Which they can, but the return has got to be worth it. I don't know how many many splash worthy players are even left.

I think they should still have enough for one more decent sized move even factoring all that in and without a restructure. I’m kind of assuming nothing would exceed Queen’s first year cap hit.

But yeah looking at everyone left in the FA market, I don’t see too many impactful options left outside of the safety market and an injured Connor Williams. Maybe they do just end up adding a Boyd/Reynolds and some other minor pieces and move on to the draft. Maybe I expected too much but that would leave me a little underwhelmed.

They still have Pickens for this year and next, so they can address it later in the draft this year or earlier in the draft next year and/or the following year before they are potentially without Pickens.

They don't have time to wait on the O-line IMO. Starting Dan Moore and the equivalent of Cole again just can't happen.

Assuming they sign a Boyd/Reynolds type, a rookie WR is probably not starting right away either.

"Rookies don't start on good teams"

- Mike Tomlin

I think this is the last year you have with Pickens before a decision needs to be made on him. If he has a solid year he’s 100% going to want a new contract next summer so you’re either going to have to pay him, trade him, or deal with a disgruntled Pickens.

But yeah they absolutely need to upgrade the line and could limp through a year at WR.

Not awful but not a stud. With Minkah, it’s probably not easy to get two different top flight safeties. He seems better in run defense and plays in the box a bit more. Which is fine by me, because I want Minkah back more and making plays on the ball.
He doesn't have to be top flight, but is he an above average safety?

Agree. I'm just wondering if the new guy is better than Kazee?
Exactly what I was wondering.

im reading new safety is really good in run support and decent in coverage. sounds good to me. 3 years younger than Simmons and cheaper.

We've spent a lot on defense already so I get that. I just don't know much about the guy full transparency.

a couple people posted the rumor on X. i didnt even click on it
Is it anyone who's connected or just some ham n egger conjuring things up?

Who knows if he's any good, but the fit makes sense. Supporting against the run game frees Fitz up to be a ball hawk.

In five years in the NFL, Elliott has played 57 games, including 50 starts. He's recorded 287 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions, 17 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Last season, he allowed just 69.2% of passes thrown his way to be completed.2 hours ago

SI

Seems like a high completion % to me, but I'm no safety guru.

I read he had a bad year in coverage last season but was solid in previous seasons

Arik Armstead and DJ Reader are both there if they want to reinforce the DL (tho Reader is hella injury prone, right?). But I think the fact that Reynolds is number 5 on The Athletic's best 10 fa left says it all. Unless there's a trade or more cuts, they've pretty much missed the boat.

Which I'm kinda fine with. I didn't have huge expectations and free agency is where teams go to screw up. I really liked the idea of Wilkins, and I wanted some veteran help on the OL, and that's the only things I'm like "dang" on. I joke about the safety being underwhelming but, despite there being a bunch of help out there, we didn't need anything mad with Fitzpatrick about. And after the Peterson experience, I'm okay with avoiding the dwindling veteran pile.

I like Chark for his size, speed, and route tree. If he hadn't been stuck in some of the worst offenses in the league his whole career, he'd be a bigger name, I think. He's a bargain who could be a 1,000 receiver if this offense takes off under Smith and Wilson.

There are a few good C's left available. T is probably no longer a FA fix.

It seems we're gearing up fore AFC north football. Hard hitters who particularly are stout against the run. Not so sure how we'll do against the rest of the league.

But if signing Elliot frees up Minkah and we get a good ball hawk at CB, it might work out well. Still a lot to do.

Who you thinking? The Athletic rankings show only Cole and Connor Williams, and Williams probably won't be fit for the start of next season.

I'll have to take that back. The list I looked at is a few days old. Still, I wouldn't splash on Boyd given this team's ability to hit in the draft at WR. If Wilson looks good this year, they'll need money to keep him.
