Agreed. Sounds like we might restructure his contract to bring down that cap hit.

WR class is absolutely loaded this year. Might see 15 guys go first two rounds

If they restructure his cap that’s the only way I can squint and see this making some sense. Right now they just swapped one need for another and saved no cap space in doing so.

Jackson was going to be cut so there’s gotta be something going on with his contract.

I think the only issue I have with adding Jackson is that I'm not sold on Porter Jr as a CB1 talent quite yet, so this seems like their top 2 CBs are more of a CB2 and a CB3. That's not bad, and arguably better than what they had last year due to Peterson's regression, but I'd hope for better than that personally.

At the same time, the UFA CB class was pretty weak and started to see names go off the board, so I'm not sure how many better options are available than Jackson.

Thank God. Losing DJ for free would have been addition by subtraction. I can't count how many plays were wasted on him instead of being spread out around the offense.

I'll take the DB depth too.

Also for real, as someone who went from "hey maybe it makes sense to move Johnson if there's value" to "wait, he's done nothing here in the last two years and I hate the team culture with him as a leader", I'm cool with this. I dunno that I wouldn't have preferred just cutting him and not having Donte Jackson, and obviously they need to make a couple of somethings happen at WR, but I'm cool with it.

That said, this trade is a pretty damning indictment on Johnson by the team.

edit: Also idly wonder whether it's going to be amusing that Johnson is leaving just as his biggest problem on the team is losing his place, or whether they're actually kinda serious about keeping Pickett and ergo saw no point in Johnson.

I don't think they were ever getting a guy who was taking Porter away from being CB1. That sort of guy is super expensive.

So right now their WR room is:

George Pickens
Calvin Austin
Denzel Mims?

Yeah Omar’s got some work to do

They literally have Muth and GP and nothing else.

I mean, any front office football people realize his numbers are more from volume of opportunities than they are due to his talents.

He's a good #3 slot WR on a good team.
No he is a very good number 2 but this draft is so deep at wr only 1 fa wr as actually signed

I’m actually a die hard Panthers fan, it’s a long story.

Action Jackson is a good player when healthy. Incredible speed and athleticism. He’s hurt a lot though.

He’ll never be a shut down guy but is a good #2. Once again, when healthy.

So Khan has 9m in space right now and he could restructure basically every big contract we have if he wanted to. He has massive amounts of room right now to play around. I'm not sure what else is out there for him though.

I'd take a bet Boyd is going to be a Steeler shortly. We will almost guaranteed draft one.

Could do a long shot with Calvin Ridley. No clue what kinda contract he’s after. We just need someone solid because no rookie should be trusted immediately to replace 80+ targets.

This team’s likability factor just went up by the power of ten.

It's neither a salary dump nor a good asset, the two things I was told we would be accomplish by dumping Johnson. How you blow another hole open in your lineup while getting nothing in return AND adding cap makes zero sense to me.
The only thing I can see making any sense is an immediate restructure with Jackson to bring that hit down. Cuz essentially using 15+ mil on him is bananas.

I will say, if Cooper DeJean is there at 20, it'd be really hard not to pair him and JPJ together for the next 5-7 years. An elite secondary in Pittsburgh? Haven't seen it since the 90's.

DeJean also has a "Troy" feeling about him. He just has this sixth sense and he can play multiple positions in the secondary. Could be a really fun player to draft.

We traded an average starting WR for an average starting CB. Both had bad contracts. I have no issue with this trade. This draft is extremely deep at WR and I think Boyd is still in play too.

The writing was on the wall for DJ after seeing Jeudy’s return.
