Mostly based on his rating in the end of year player survey.

By the way, I'm not linking his perceived success or failure to mentor players with on the field success in any way, merely stating that Russell Wilson signing, and the fact that he and Tomlin hit it off, is low risk and not really something to criticize in the context of his price.

So player surveys are your measure of "developing" young men?
I'll again say: what people WANT is sometimes not in their best interests (and in some cases very detrimental) to their long-term development.

And the price of obtaining RW is an entirely different discussion. I'm merely pointing out that RW and Fields are 2 Black QB's that Tomlin had a hard-on for some time. What other QB(s) were so strongly linked to the Steelers this offseason? Either it's a very curious coincidence or it's a pattern of behavior that people don't want to acknowledge bc it's kind of ugly.

I mean, what "white QB's" other than Kirk Cousins were really out there this offseason that were worth having? It's not 1979 where black QB's are a rarity. And really, Pickett by all accounts was hand-chosen by Tomlin. He's very white.

I think most players would look better next to Roquan Smith than not. Don't really see that as a knock on Queen. And I'm sure 'trash' away from him is a bit of an exaggeration.

He's still young, been durable so far, high draft pedigree, used to AFC North football, major position of need. I like it.
Yeah, it's a minor concern, but Queen isn't being paid ELITE money even for an off-ball LB and he adds speed that was badly needed. If this is THE big swing I'd still rather it have been for a CB or OT, but on balance it makes them better.

Not only this, but he was in his rookie and sophomore year before adding Roquan. Why is it so hard to believe that a guy improves from his first 2 years to his 3rd and 4th years?

Either way, it's a great add that I'm all for. Now we wait and see if they make another sizeable move like this for an OT or a CB, they still have the money for it.

Love it. Honestly, I’m going to miss Pickett when he’s gone in the next year or so. Not because I like him at all, but because I’m going to miss making fun of him here. So many of us will.

Not to mention taken in the same deaft as Willis who, if this conspiracy theory was correct would be a perfect for for it.

I don't think it's a secret that Tomlin really enjoys mentoring young black men but at the same time, I don't think that's really guided team decisions and isn't needed to explain why they went for Wilson :dunno:

The contract is actually really surprising. Edmunds got 18 million per year last year and I don’t think Queen is really worse than Edmunds.

At that price I would have been peeved, but under 14 million is pretty reasonable for what Queen is.

Maybe that's the league wide discount on "but what if he's a product of Smith".

I'm not going to pretend I know the rest of the league well enough to have a strong opinion on this, and I'd generally rather make my big splashes at positions other than ILB, but he doesn't come with the biggest pitfalls of most FA signings and the money seems no worse than most FA signings.

Queen is basically a better version of Elandon Roberts. He's explosive and great at shooting in on blitzes. He has improved in pass coverage too

I can see Denver or possibly one of these teams that plan on drafting a QB early bringing him in as that stopgap starter until the rookie is ready. I never thought there would be a big market for him as a starter though. He'll probably get a decent backup deal at most. Some of those fringe starter/backup guys have really gotten paid. Makes me feel even better about getting Russ so cheap.
It’s a gamble but his best bet maybe to just stay working out and not sign. Wait and see if in the first quarter of the season a QB goes down hard Rogers style for the season then swoop in. Huge gamble but if he wants to be a starter probably his only shot.

I like the Queen signing, but guess I have some caveats:

Seems like a good blitzer but he struggles to get off blocks and isn't as good in coverage as many think he is. He is ok not great.

I don't think he's going to replicate what he did in Baltimore bc they play a more aggressive scheme. So I hope people don't look at his statline and think he sucks.

Feel like we need a monster DT in front of him still.

Very low guaranteed money here. Very good contract for the Steelers.

If the Steelers were to cut him after year 1, would they be faced with any dead cap? I know he has those roster bonuses, but I feel like those would be void with cutting him?

Not that I'm saying I want to cut him after a year, I'm just surprised that he took as little as he did. I would have expected better offers than this.

Here’s the cap breakdown: Patrick Queen

So a little over 6 million cap hit this year and then not terrible dead money if the signing doesn’t work out. That’s a no brainer signing really with that structure.

I think trading back is their best option this year.
Not if you can get Powers-Jackson or Mitchell. TBH I'd trade up if need be. Not much but, worked well for us last year. I'd try to get a safety in free agency and go C and CB early on in the draft.
