I'm sure he does try to mentor black athletes and he appears to be pretty good at it. However I don't think signing Wilson for 1mm would be at odds with attempting to win football games.

By what measure would you say this is true? Name 1 person that Tomlin took under his wing and amounted to anything? He's been in his job 17 years, surely you can point to 1 former player or coach that has had success on or off the field.

This is where I keep repeating that this perception of Tomlin has a bunch of people fooled. Just because he's buddies with these athletes doesn't mean he's a good mentor or makes them well-disciplined or has helped them develop any other trait. He's an enabler. Those types of people in authority tend not to do well.

Here's a children's book analogy for those who can't quite grasp this concept:

Man, teams throwing a ton of money at Guards this year. Really puts the Seumalo 3yr 24m deal into perspective.

Yes he didn’t fall for a sb winning Qb who has 9 pro bowls. Whose numbers are close to baker Lawrence and stafford the last 2 seasons for league minimum. A guy whose numbers are better than he has gotten from a Qb since pre ben injury in 2018

What was the other QB the Steelers were highly linked to this offseason: Justin Fields
I'd typically say "draw your own conclusions", but I don't think you'd get the pattern I'm pointing out...

Kaboly is full of shit. The Steelers have literally no reason to bring back Rudolph because he'll never see the field with Wilson and Pickett. Spending money on him to be the QB3 is literally just wasting cap space they need for other areas of their roster.

If you want another QB, take a guy with like a 4th rounder to be your QB3.

Ah I forgot about Denver. That would be a good landing spot.

It makes me feel even more conflicted about Wilson. The salary is great but if teams were willing to spend 25 million on the Minshews of the world, but not league minimum on Russ…idk. Steelers will either look like geniuses or everyone will be laughing at them.

Tbf, Vegas has Wilson in for a visit too. They're one of the three teams in the league with a public interest in giving that to him.

I think the lack of interest in Wilson league wise should be a warning to anyone who's convinced he's at least as good as his best Denver stats and who can bounce back in a big way in a better setting - but are probably in line with the sort of ability those expecting a competent stopgap can expect. Most teams in this league don't really want competent stopgaps so the market for them is rarely all that. It's a bit surprising Minshew got what he did imo, although I wouldn't be surprised if the money is structured in a way where to get the most of it he needs to step up and not get cut after a year.

Didn't Khan say something like "We owe it to ourselves to find the next great Steelers C"?

I'm fully expecting them to take a C in R1 or R2.

Yes. Also talked about how it's a great year to find a C.

Also had a C in for a visit pre-FA though. But since that fell through, absolutely.

I guess the nice part of having Wilson in is I feel less stressed about having a young-ish line that's going to make some mistakes out of inexperience.

You seem convinced the Steelers wouldn't want to spend anything more than they had to at QB2 and QB3 but that doesn't seem to be how they're operating. Wasn't that long ago the Steelers effectively gave Rudolph 5m to be QB3 and kept him for the whole season rather than cutting him to save money.

They also kept Trubisky as an unnecessarily expensive QB2 last year too.

I don't think they're as bothered by spending on back-up QBs to get the depth they want as you think they should be.

I also don't think it should be taken as read that Pickett would be in Rudolph's way. The Steelers clearly feel differently about the situation than to what their public utterances indicate; nobody knows just how different yet.

Could be totally misremembering but I’m pretty sure Queen kind of struggled until they brought in Roquan Smith.

Big signing though and hopefully will stop the revolving door of ILBs.

Edit: Damn that’s actually kind of cheap compared to what some of the other linebackers have been signing for.

My buddy who’s a Ravens fan texted me as soon as the news broke saying he was trash without Roquan. I couldn’t tell if he was just being salty or what

Not the first time I've seen people ask that in the last 10 minutes.

Still, he's young, resilient, and I bet that money is structured in a way where he has to prove he's the guy to see the lion's share of it in Y3. I can't say this was the splash I was looking for but I don't hate it.

Queen is a perfect fit for our team. great signing. although i do hope they bring back Elandon and/or Kwon because i doubt Holcomb will be able to play at the beginning of the season

There is a lot of chatter that Queen was just a product of Roquan, and maybe he was. But maybe he learned a thing or two from Roquan also. Queen has pedigree and he has been productive. I am happy to have him in the fold.

Khan and Weidl with their 2nd offseason in a row that has been like taking BP with a corked bat.
