I can see Denver or possibly one of these teams that plan on drafting a QB early bringing him in as that stopgap starter until the rookie is ready. I never thought there would be a big market for him as a starter though. He'll probably get a decent backup deal at most. Some of those fringe starter/backup guys have really gotten paid. Makes me feel even better about getting Russ so cheap.

Ah I forgot about Denver. That would be a good landing spot.

It makes me feel even more conflicted about Wilson. The salary is great but if teams were willing to spend 25 million on the Minshews of the world, but not league minimum on Russ…idk. Steelers will either look like geniuses or everyone will be laughing at them.

Well, while I'm a bit in the middle on whether it was good to sign Wilson, I think it came down to Wilson having less competition here than in other places and frankly to Tomlin. We can all rail on him for shitty assistant hires and poor game management but there's no coach more respected by players around the league.*

*This should not be treated as support for the continued employment of Mike Tomlin as the Steelers head coach.

I'm not worried about Rudolph. He'll land somewhere (likely not here) at a higher cap hit than Wilson.

Guessing we add a late rounder from the draft, and a bottom of the barrel FA from the scrap heap that will be jettisoned ASAP during camp.

I love this thread this time of year.

I think the only team that could be interested in Fields at this point is probably the Vikings, but would the Bears trade him within the division? I'm really skeptical of that.

I could also see the Broncos.

He'd be incredible there.

I think I read the expectation is for them to draft a QB in round 1 this year, especially because they've had a surplus of draft capital in recent years due to the Wilson trade.

Honestly, I could see them taking Penix in either round 1 or 2 to sit behind Smith to start. Seattle taking the kid from UW to learn behind Geno Smith for a year? Makes a ton of sense to me.

It would make sense honestly. Penix is also on the older side of the rookies so he should have the maturity to step in sooner.

They’re really awesome. I would love to promote Khan to a POFO type role and keep Wiedl, but even if not, letting talent matriculate isn’t a bad thing.

Same. And I think they will. I think what they are waiting for is Dan Patrick Rooney to take over and sort out the division of labor. DPR is a football guy. He will not be like Art 2. He's going to need Khan to take care of more the business side of things. He and Weidl can take care of the football stuff.

Rudolph may have overplayed his hand…Darnold is going to the Vikings so I don’t see anything but a backup job available to him.

He should embrace being a really solid backup. If I were him, I'd try to find a spot like San Diego and just sit behind Herbert and be his guy. I don't know the QB situations of other teams very well though.

Guess SB wasn’t having it.

Barkley has done everything he can in NY. Tiki is a hater. Howie is an awesome GM.

Wilson signing here for what he did had to of given Rudolph a pit in his stomach.

Didn't Khan say something like "We owe it to ourselves to find the next great Steelers C"?

I'm fully expecting them to take a C in R1 or R2.

I will also say this, Khan and Weidl may have inadvertently did exactly what they needed to do to get Tomlin out of the way - they put in an OC who is competent and they brought in a QB that has an ego. The defense is good enough with Tomlin and Austin making that way more mediocre than it should be that it doesn't negatively impact the team.

I think the top 3 C's are probably better than anything in free agency. I say 3 now because Graham Barton sounds like he's moving from LT to C. I can't imagine that's going to be a tough transition for him.

Drafting Barton for us is actually a two-fer because he can play RT or C.

This solidifies my belief that Tomlin wishes to be a big brother/mentor first and foremost to black athletes. Winning football games appears secondary.
Yes he didn’t fall for a sb winning Qb who has 9 pro bowls. Whose numbers are close to baker Lawrence and stafford the last 2 seasons for league minimum. A guy whose numbers are better than he has gotten from a Qb since pre ben injury in 2018

I'm sure he does try to mentor black athletes and he appears to be pretty good at it. However I don't think signing Wilson for 1mm would be at odds with attempting to win football games.

So if they don't win a playoff game you will finally call out Tomlin then?

Asking for a friend of a friend.

Yes, definitely draft Barton… he’s the best for sure… as a matter of fact I don’t think Jackson Powers-Johnson should go in the first 36 picks. 37? Sure 100%…. But not before that :sarcasm:

100 percent its beyond time for a playoff win. I don’t think they will win a super bowl but i anything less than a playoff win is a failure

JPJ. If he's there at 20, you're likely solidifying that position for 10-12 years, Absolutely grab him unless someone extraordinary drops. then go corner at 51. Really like Mitchell though.
