Shoulda got one game in
I woke up the other day to a message from my daughter’s mom asking me for money to pitch in so she (my daughter) can attend a conference in Ottawa in a couple of weeks. She’s supposed to attend, so naturally I said yes. But I asked my daughter what it was she was going to, because I at least want to know where my money is going.

It’s apparently a conference where she gets to talk to the people who are a bridge between the Canadian government, provincial government, public district school boards, Catholic school district school boards, and the actual school government. And seeing my daughter is trying to fix the difference between native religion education and regular education in my city alone, it makes sense. I’m proud of her, but apparently I’m raising a politician

Hopefully you still have time to get her on a righteous path

Honest question - how is the EV industry supposed to be viable and/or eco-friendly with the scarcity of metals and the type of mining required to supply it? It just seems quite short-sighted to me, unless lithium, nickel, cobalt, etc is somehow more prevalent than oil, and somehow becomes renewable in EV batteries in the future.
Check out a company called Aqua Metals. They recycle old car batteries and extract almost pure metals from it.

Hopefully in an ideal world, the need for mining reduces and we can start a circular system.

She’s more liberal than I am. And I’m pretty liberal.
I'm anti-Liberal, I just refused entry to a mask wearer. He got upset, I was so you wear the mask then take it off to sit down and drink, as if germs only operate above 4'. He blubbered about discrimination and I told him to take his issues 3 bars down as the next 2 are mine and they won't let him in either

To be honest I wouldn't really care except historically we have the most problems with mask wearers, followed by the 20 something Chads

The hyper-optimistic, long-term solution envisioned is a sufficient supply of retired vehicle batteries to recycle into enough new batteries to fully satisfy demand, a closed loop of supply with no mining required. Elon's former right-hand tech guy, JB Straubel, founded Redwood Materials with that vision in mind. Its plant is located near Giga Nevada, Tesla's battery and semi-truck facility outside of Reno.

The current situation is challenging, with geopolitical considerations.

China leads the world in the production of many of these minerals, even ones that are scarce domestically. Its lax environmental standards enable refining operations that would be undesirable in western nations. NIMBY discourages even environmentally responsible operations in the west.

Tesla is striving for cobalt-free batteries. No decent human being wants to see impoverished, barefoot children scrambling in a pile of rocks and stagnant water for the benefit of the local potentate. (Cobalt is found in every single smart phone on the planet, btw. We all have dirty hands.) The current cobalt content in Tesla batteries using it is under 5%.

On a number of occasions Elon has publicly asked, almost pleaded, for help in securing additional supplies of nickel. Seriously, comments not far removed from "psst, anyone know where I can score some nickel?"

The Model 3 RWD uses a battery containing only lithium, iron, and phosphate (LFP). Lithium and iron are two of the most common elements in the earth's crust, so raw material supply is not an issue. Lithium refining is a nasty business, from what I understand. Tesla is building a lithium processing plant, using ore from North American sources only, near Corpus Christi, TX. It claims that 2025 production will be sufficient for 1M EVs. Unfortunately, LFP batteries are currently unsuitable for use in the rest of its vehicles, which have more demanding power requirements.

To put that 1M vehicle number in perspective, Tesla's ambitious goal for 2030 is to produce 20M EVs. Current annual worldwide production is ~90M vehicles of all types. This article provides useful data for the mining implications.

Don't get me started on copper.

As I said at the start of this far-too-long rant, the situation is challenging. The good news is battery technology is quickly improving and work on substituting more widely available minerals for rarer and less acceptable ones is well underway.

Interesting stuff! Just wondering your 2 cents (and others) on the following..

Basically, my company does solar with those big lithium batteries for storage. I’ve had just a few people mention that it ain’t actually green or good due to the lithium mining (and the slave labor it involves).. which, honestly, those are points. One dude said he thus drove diesel to be green, which.. what? I just read a book on how we’re nearing peak oil, and how the world is gonna be a mess when we really start running out (which is only gonna happen faster with China and India rapidly using more). Meanwhile, sorry, but the phones we all use might have some of those same source issues behind ‘em, but we don’t discuss that..

Anyways, the traditional electric company is an awful monopoly, California’s electric grid actually has major issues in general and these batteries should help- just wondering what y’all think. I vary between thinking I’m the most moral man in the world and wondering if this really is a solution, but the traditional way for power got 13% more expensive to start the year, because the monopoly previously started a bunch of fires, so.. ya. Complicated world, just wanna make a living and feel good about what I do.

The only time I’ve ever had problems with mask wearers is when they decide to sit right beside me. Although the only time I wore it was when in the halls at school (went back to school during the lockdown), grocery store, and hospital. So I wasn’t too inconvenienced, other than instantly fogged up glasses

I only wear one when I'm grocery shopping when I think I'm sick. I don't need to spread my crud to anyone else. The rest of the time I don't really go anywhere.

I believe there is a time and a place for masks. They are effective at reducing transmission of illness so if someone is ill but wants to go out in public where you will be close to other humans it is courteous to wear a mask since they are readily available and generally accepted. On the flip side it's mostly illogical to wear a mask to an establishment where you are then going to remove the mask to eat and/or drink or remove it for any reason other than adjusting it briefly to toss a lozenge in your mouth.

That, and the strange way in which gov't and society accepted t-shirt and rag material as an acceptable risk-reduction.

So how many of y’all are criminals?I bet ya don’t have licences to dry your washing.

I confess, I've broken the slipper law, elevator law, definitely a multiple multiple offender of throwing at someone's head in dodge ball and a time or two in baseball.

Hell in Thailand I've broken the no going out in public without underwear law as on several occasions Grab or Lazada arrived while in shower so quick pair of shorts and elevator to lobby

I hate to be a bummer, but some of these are a little misleading. The clothesline law in particular just means there's no law on the books to override your homeowner's or building association if they say you can't have one. Some states do have laws to override their decisions.
