Not just Italian... Sicilian. And then I momentarily, ummm, "dated" another. My ex's grandfather talked about how he managed to not wind up in the Gambino part of the family by sticking to playing jazz professionally with his brother. Things could have been very different. Which also reminds me of this tune...

:biglaugh:

I once dated an Italian. Her entire family was adamant I was Italian too because of my skin tone. And there’s absolutely no way I was allowed to refuse food.

Wrapping around to the other thread, my ex MIL talked about meeting her future husband's family and coming over for Christmas where the lasagna came out for dinner.

It was the appetizer.

Refuse food? Insult!!

I officially wasn’t allowed to refuse food until my fourth plate. And that’s because my ex’s grandmother said I didn’t have to eat anymore. And she only liked me because I went in early one day for work so my ex could get off early to go to her birthday party (we shared the same birthday).

It was the appetizer.

They had lasagna and cabbage rolls. At least it helped with the random toasts with homemade wine during the dinner.

So far this year...

- mouse hole in ceiling
- washing machine busted despite me putting about 15 hours into trying to fix it
- seemingly endless work meetings, including a complete waste of time with a $2500 after-hours subcontractor on Thursday
- no news on the 4k stipend I requested at work to make up for the lack of the previously-negotiated-but-now-denied back pay

But:
- chest pain all but gone, finally, after 6+ months
- almost at 150 subs on my channel
- made a really good pizza last night with mushrooms, onions, and Ultimate Chicken Tenders

Rivendell on a summer’s day. Loved it. River swimming and some LotR signs about filming locations.

Oh and our Kiwi Christmas trees have finally started blooming around the area. Summer started late so they are a week or two behind schedule. This is a Google photo cause my phone doesn’t do them justice, but trees like this are all over the show. I can see five around the neighbourhood right now from my kitchen window.

Will fix everything
2024 is off to a best of times/worst of times start at work.

Best of times: I get 6 weeks of PTO because I hit 25 years in 2024.

Worst of times: They announced a plan for a 15% reduction in force and are taking applications for a voluntary RIF for the next week and a half.

The corporate greed and lack of worker protections in this country is just out of control.

RIF/Layoffs need to be reserved for when the company is in absolute dire straights. Not because they want to make some more money and boost their stock price.

I've been laid off twice in the last 3 years. Once, it was understandable, I was a contractor for an tourist company during COVID. The last time, it was simply because the companies stock was doing bad after I was promoted in January. It took me 5 months to find a job....and I have a stellar resume

We need to change our priorities in this country. I wish you the best of luck man, but best case scenario you keep your role and have to absorb someone else's workload.

I work for a company who's bread and butter has been an industry that has been declining for decades. There have been a wide variety of RIFs throughout my time here. And given the increase in WFH since the pandemic, I am not surprised that they are once again downsizing and talking about trying to figure out ways to pivot.

Plus, since the Carl Icahn threat has been dealt with, I think this is way more about long term survival of the company than just boosting the stock price to make investors happy.

Plus, Wall Street wasn't high on the news initially.

This makes me wish I could give multiple reactions to a single post

Things got real when I told my daughter that a few weeks ago. *shrug* She has put in a lot of work to get herself a lot of offered funding. I'm impressed with her abilities to generate grant and scholarship applications. She's working on more today since her school is closed with the windstorm that spans the entire eastern seaboard of the US and Canada.

I lost one job due to COVID and did contract work in something I was not good at for another. Between two bouts of COVID in that span, my last three years have been horrible. Financially, I am at the point someone 30 years younger should be and there is no way to turn back the clock. And into the face of that are things that make me think fire and bricks are going to be the only options to shift the country.

Something good though it doesn't replace the evil done:

In addition and to my surprise, word is that the city will try to determine this as an on-duty incident. He had his cuffs, badge, was asked by the clerks to intervene, and ultimately took action within his official capacities. What might seem cut and dry to most people isn't necessarily so when insurance companies split hairs and logic to the Nth degree. We shall see how that pans out.

In a separate matter, there is a federal death benefit paid out for on-duty deaths, but determined by federal entities that are generally pro-LEO and less insurance or liability driven. I've heard this should go in the family's favor as well. I will happily be corrected from my first post about his family getting nothing. I still have overly negative thoughts from when my good friend and mentor died in 2001 due to his level of commitment that ultimately resulted in no death benefit of any sort. Perhaps times have changed.

I have familial experience with insurance companies that involves one actively trying to subvert an ill family member to the point that it seems like they would rather my cousin dies than continue to pay for medicine and procedures needed to continue life. I have grown extremely jaded toward them.

I hope the family does receive everything possible. I have friends who still live in Greensboro, and I used to live a few lights down from where this happened and it's so freaking senseless.

I'd like to go storm chasing. Just once. Just to see what it's like, y'know? The power of nature and all that.

Still waiting to hear damage reports. Doesn't sound "too bad" but I know folx who live in the path and I hope the and their stuff are all okay.
