Yeah, the guy we bought it from. Upon further examination, this spot has been repaired before. Things happen; it's a roughly 200 year old instrument.
Excellent. Wonderful news. Can you imagine? A 200 year-old instrument made from a sinker log that sat underwater for who knows how many hundreds of years before being crafted by a master's hand.

I wish I knew more history on it. My wife's violin is from 1930-ish Germany. We did some research on the maker but found no evidence he was a Nazi, so at least that was a relief.

Chief, out of all the things you've posted which would make most fellows feel covetous, your ability to put trust in your partners/accountants/financial planners and not feel obligated to check up on the money every second of the day is what I feel envious about. That's a great level of trust.
It's not so much a trust issue as it is the easy investments. I got tired of dealing with my property managers so after 7 years of living in the Philippines, I sold everything. The money was divested into Vanguard S&P, some REITs, a couple different dividends like Coca Cola and Mastercard.

I live off my retirement and disability so when I had the properties I never took any money, I just moved the gains to other investments. So I still just roll the dividends back over as I don't need the money as I live a fairly simple life. I send my self $2500 a month to establish a monthly pattern for immigration in case I sell the bars and get rid of my business visa. I currently make 10 to 12k a month from the bars so that money gets invested in crypto, though it won't ever be as good as the 25k I invested when ethereum was at $43.

So basically my curiosity for my investments is assuaged quarterly when I get my dividend statements so I can see how much I have that I'll never use but that will give my grandkids a leg up in life

I played a Martin Custom Shop sinker mahogany, Adirondack spruce dread. It just rang like a bell. It was two years old. Can’t imagine what it will sound like in 20. Brilliant.

I find it so fascinating that violins can learn to sing more brilliantly after years of being played by talented musicians.

I like Hog for backs and sides a lot. It suits me fine and I like the way it rings too. I bet that one was a beauty.

Quite a few years back there was a device that one could use to essentially vibrate the top of their instrument to replicate hours of being played. The idea was that it would lessen the time it would take a new instrument to open up or perhaps enhance the qualities of an older instrument. I never was moved to investigate the claims myself but I believe several luthiers have utilized such a device to reputed good effect. It's a fascinating concept.

I've got a friend who is working as a luthier in Virginia - I'll run the question by him and see if he's got some industry info.

It will be interesting what they say on the subject. I don't understand the mechanism involved so I never leapt to conclusions one way or another, and some of the devices used suction cups to affix the device to the top which is a no-go for me. There is a lot of superstition and snake oil in the realm, as you well know. I tend to take a practical approach - if it's a dog not much will improve it.

Be nice to your Wegmans workers. I pulled liked 58 hours this week. 5 til 5 tomorrow and 2 til 2 xmas eve. Then church and dinner with my fam and then dinner with the wifes fam. Gonna be a run here.....
Wegmans is awesome, a huge THANK YOU to all in the retail sector. You are very much appreciated and yes, as cliche' as it sounds, for me and my circle, you don't go unnoticed.

This instrument talk reminds me of a few instruments I have. I bought a 75 year old lap steel guitar and it sings. I have no idea how to play it, but it sounds amazing when I just screw around on playing it. It’s such a warm comforting sound no matter if I play it acoustically or hook it up electronically. It’s in such good of shape that the only thing that has been replaced on it is the strings.

I also have the first run of the Gibson acoustic/electric hybrid. It’s now warped and I need a luthier to fix it, but it’s an amazing sound as it stands. With how old if is, the price to fix it is way too much. I’m looking at multiple Ks. This guitar is actually a “demo” from the 1940s so it’s on the high end

If you want, there are a couple of folks out there who talk about learning lap steel from YouTube. One of the guys from Hermanos Gutierrez said that in an interview and that guy makes some great sounds now.

Yep haha, work on Christmas is nothing special over here, this particular conference overlaps with Christmas Eve/Christmas basically every year, they moved it a week or so earlier a few years back but reverted to Christmas time.

My travel day is still a Sunday Christmas Eve so I have to weave through holidaygoers on my way to catch my plane.
Complimentary KFC at the conference?

Merry Christmas everyone! Stay healthy and be safe while still enjoying all that life has to offer! And Santa-never mind all the glitz and glitter-just bring me one Stanley Cup winning Sabres team before I leave this mortal coil...

It’s not Xmas here anymore. It’s Boxing Day, but Merry xmas to you people in the past.

It’s a pity you can’t feel a photo, because it’s cooking here, a perfect Kiwi Christmas. I tried to find a photo of the Kiwi Christmas tree (Pōhutukawa), but it seems like none of my sister’s neighbours have one
