Four+ hours. Not really my expertise either

So on the good news front, the offer did actually come in. It's not ideal (contract to hire rather than direct hire), but after 4 months getting back to work again and not having to take a 20-30% giant paycut is a win.

Congrats. I'm on job search hiatus/capitulation #3 in the last 18 months. I just don't want to do this any more.

I know Powerball is a scam, but the lure of never having to look for a job again is far to strong for me not to play. I've been laid off 3 times in my career. The one thing I've learned is that EVEN in good companies, when their bottom line is even THREATENED to be affected, workers are always the first to go. Doesn't matter your title or that they just promoted yet. Some bean counter is going to run metrics and stealth can you if you don't hit an arbitrary number.

NEVER EVER EVER be loyal to companies. I was planning on staying at my last company for the long term, talking about management roles, was just promoted.

Canned with 0 notice via an email. Shut out of slack so I couldn't say good bye to my coworkers. Just a scheduled zoom call in a few hours. And it took me 4.5 months to find something that wasn't a 25-30% paycut. If my wife wasn't working it would have been a bad time. I would have had to roll back my salary 8 years.

That is my 'f*** corporate America" rant for the day.

Right on. And I'm sorry you had to deal with all that. That's layers and layers of bullshit

Amen.

In related news, I’m moving outta education and into sales. Anyone have any experience with solar? I wanna hear the good and the bad.

But basically ya, commission-based is scary but I think I talk well enough where this is a good switch. Wish it were easier to earn a living teaching, but everything I see is part time or requires a masters. I’m not paying more to be a poorly treated public school teacher, respect to those that do it.

I have solar, problem is from the sales side if the homeowner subsidies go away or get cut less people will likely purchase, and I don't know what kind of interest rates they are offering on the loans for them anymore, mine was 2.99% over 20yr when I made the purchase in 2019, and my utility company hardly gives you anything on the rate for you selling surplus back to the grid. On my last bill I sold back 431 kWh and got a whopping $12.13 credit for it.

I had 2 middle school principals move to real estate and work for me as they hated the education system's politics. They're both still in the game almost 15yrs later though one went the corporate route and moved to builder sales rep. Commission sales is good in that you can see the tangible results from your efforts, work harder and smarter make a lot more money. The important thing is you need to implement systems and have structure or you will fail. To be honest, I'd still probably be in real estate if I hadn't gotten sick as I loved the challenges, and having those 80, 90, 100k months were very satisfying

It's a tough gig, the adage of it takes money to make money is very real. I was spending about 5k a month, and that was always being tweaked to get better results. I could tell you where every client came from, whether cold calling, data farming, Web sites, contract expiration etc I was pretty anal to be honest. I'm still that way with the bars, I can tell you exactly how many drinks any of my 127 girls earned any given night, if they got those in their home bar or sister bar, how many times they short timed, or bar fined. Who is earning me money, who is just breaking even and who needs to be moved out

Woke up to part of my fence laying in my neighbor's yard this morning. An expense I wasn't expecting. Looking closely it seems most of the wood has rotten on the entire fence line so eventually I'll have to replace all of it.

Worst part was.... moving that section out of my neighbor's yard there was a bunch of ants. And now I have lots of very itchy parts.

EDIT: And now I realize I need to mow my lawn!

So, it is open enrollment time for benefits at work.

I am actually happy with how things are working out. My best option for health insurance is just changing from Aetna to Anthem BCBS and the price is going down. Even with adding life insurance coverage for my wife, my out of paycheck cost is dropping YOY.

And it looks like our marriage counselor is still in network with the switch to BCBS.

Now I may need to find a therapist for myself when the New Year gets here. I need to stop freaking out when my team lead actually wants a 1 on 1. It is not good for my mental health.

I used to do 1-1s on a weekly basis with my folks. springing them on them as a surprise is a great way to raise blood pressure, plus it gives the opportunity for ongoing feedback and coaching. It also gives them time to gather info to go with their next skip level (my old boss/2 levels up from them) about what I'm doing right or wrong as their lead.

I try to do weekly sit downs aka brunch with my managers, and then a separate one with my mamasans and cashiers as they do the real work. Then once a month, big group hug to sing Day-o and Kumbaya.

I spend more on my 3 managers brunch than I do on 5 mamasans and 6 cashiers. Their favorite 40 baht $1.15 hole in the wall eatery can't be beat

My situation is that my team lead scheduled my weekly 1 on 1 at the same time as a meeting that I sometimes need to be at and most times I do not.

So, he asked me Wednesday if I had to go to that meeting after cancelling my 1 on 1 a lot recently. So, that was part of why I started to stress out. Even though it was a really quick one and he was looking to see if there were any surprises I need to tell him about and that he didn't have any surprises to tell me about.

I always hated 1:1 meetings. If I need to talk to my boss, I'll go see them, but scheduling something ahead of time to chat feels like kindergarten bullshit. If I'm not doing my job, you'll know about it, because shit will be on figurative fire.

Also, just getting caught up on S2 of Welcome to Wrexham. It's painful how much I love this show.

I've had managers that I talk with daily about what was going on and what I was doing - and what they were doing. And I've had managers who only wanted to "talk" when something didn't go well. I prefer the first but not every manager likes to be that collaborative. *shrug* Depends on the relationship I suppose.

My only complaint about S2 has been them leaning way in on the off the pitch stories and fewer of the game recaps parts of the episodes.

Still love it, though.

And I did love the focus they gave to the women's side going unbeaten and their one match at the Racecourse Ground.

Only through 2 or 3 EPS at this point. There does seem to be less of a focus on the games, but it's probably also played up for drama since at this point of the series you don't know what's going to happen unless you actually follow the results.

This. (except the stuff about Wrexham. I'm behind by a few eps.)

My boss knows and trusts me to get my work done. If he needs me, he reaches out. If I need him, same. Work doesn't need to be complicated to be productive. :)

EDIT: Important to note that I'm not actively looking to get promoted or move out of my position. If you are, that does change things. Facetime, especially in a large corporation like I work for is important.

They are making the show just as much about the town as they are the club.
