Welp, our 2 week camping trip starts tomorrow. My comfort level with "outside" is however long it takes for me to get from my car to my house. I'm bringing a figurative ton of books, to hopefully help me forget the heat, humidity, and insects. Choice highlights include William Gibson, Brandon Sanderson, and John La Carre.
This sounds like me but I would never get myself into a 2 week camping trip lol. Have fun!

And so that’s the first part of the paper that’s received the most attention. The thing I’m most excited about in the paper and the thing that I was most surprised by is the second part, which is the outcome of: Is this Ivy League college admissions blood sport really worth it? And I expected, based on past research and maybe some of my own prior beliefs, to be honest, the answer would be no, not really. But the answer is yes, it actually is really worth it. Students who are admitted off the wait list to one of these schools, compared to students who are rejected off the wait list, are about 60 percent more likely to be in the top 1 percent of income at age 33 themselves. They’re twice as likely to be at a top 10 graduate school, and they’re about three times as likely to work for a prestigious firm in a variety of sectors. Think about top law firms, top consulting firms, research hospitals, prestigious universities, and so on. So it really does seem to make a difference, and that was surprising.

He is surprised that an Ivy League education is worth it and leads to better career outcomes? Really?

Tomorrow is Jam Jam Giggolo, the Feast from the East. Waking up early to start the carne guisada in the slow cooker, then going diving. After the morning dive, it's back to start the sauza beans in the instant pot. While the beans cook, it's flour tortillas time fortunately I brought my caretaker and 2 GoGo girls and my friend brought an entourage of 5 so hands to cook while I roll aren't in short supply. The only issue is getting the girls attention away from selfie and yakyak at the pool.
For being the Buddha holiday with no alcohol sales, the girls aren't shy about hitting the cache that we brought down.

Really it's about connections, not the what you know but who you know

I think it is 80/20 towards the connections.

If you are lazy and don't take care of business in the classroom, then the connections will only get you so far.

I forget what DI Men's Lacrosse coach it was, I think it may have been Duke's head coach, but he has a binder with business cards from all their lacrosse alumni. When he goes to meet recruits and their parents, he breaks out the book, asks what industry he would like to get into after college, and then shows off all the connections they have in that area.

Forget trying to get a scholarship by playing college lacrosse. The business connections are legit.

One of my son's teammates from last year had been contemplating doing a grad year at SUNY Oswego and using his 5th COVID year to keep playing lacrosse. But, he got a job at Maverik/Cascade Lacrosse that was too good to pass up. And it was all about connections. One of the assistant coaches at Morrisville runs the field testing program for Maverik/Cascade and there have been other Morrisville grads that have gotten jobs there because of the connect.

Yes and no. It depends what you're taking and how good you are at networking. Looking at the history of the SCOTUS and where they graduated. Going Ivy League for education or music performance or computer science? Probably not worth it. Law? PoliSci? Yeah, for sure.

I wouldn't be surprised if comp sci was worth it because of the connections you could develop in the venture capital space.

If I had a kid that was gifted musically, I would definitely funnel them to SUNY Potsdam.

My older (16) is interested in Potsdam, amongst a handful of others (Ithaca College, Eastman)

Its not the quality of the education that leads to the better career outcome though, its the networking that comes with it.

I believe that they are both required.

If they did not provide a quality education and did not prepare people well for the workforce, then there wouldn't be the networks because the prior graduates wouldn't stick in their jobs.

A connect can get you in the door. But, it is what you bring to the job that keeps you in that door. And I do believe that Ivy league schools do a good job at preparing people for the workforce.

Eastman is really good.

But, I know the value of SUNY schools like Potsdam that can give you a private school experience at a SUNY price. The only downside is where SUNY Potsdam is located between the weather and not a ton of fun stuff to do unless you like drinking and high level hockey.

I did not say they weren't a good quality, you can get the same quality of education elsewhere and cheaper, but its the networking that gets them in the door, where someone with the same degree and GPA and test scores from a different school probably won't even receive a call back on their resume.

Will fix everything
My older daughter graduated Ithaca last year (occupational therapy)

I grew up in the southern tier and was in Ithaca last week to get the family together for pictures. Man that is a pretty area, it had been a while since i had been up there. Drove from Ithaca over to Cortland to get to 81 back to PA and the hills and trees were all in full bloom.

Given the way that costs for private colleges have escalated, it is a challenge to get something that is similar quality cheaper outside of a really top notch public university.

Harvard costs what your family can afford. We make sure of that.

  • If your family's income is less than $85,000, you'll pay nothing.
  • For families who earn between $85,000 and $150,000, the expected contribution is between zero and ten percent of your annual income.
  • Families who earn more than $150,000 may still qualify for financial aid.
  • Families at all income levels who have significant assets are asked to pay more than those without assets.
  • For more than ninety percent of American families, Harvard costs less than a public university.
  • All students receive the same aid regardless of nationality or citizenship.

The Ivy's have huge endowments that can make things more affordable in certain situations compared to other private universities.

It wouldn't surprise me if RIT & U of R were more expensive than Harvard for a fair amount of students.

network isn’t limited to ivy schools. At a smaller school it might be easier to get connected.

highly competitive jobs out of college, ivy has some advantages.

law school and other grad stuff they mean more.j

On U of R…. They nickel and dime you where they penalize you if you get other scholarships.

myy younger nephew starts at union next month. He got a scholarship for merit. My brother has a a nice work benefit. He’s tenured faculty at a major university. The school will give him $X for kids college costs. because of this and what the merit scholarship was my nephew will walk away debt free. My brother has allocated sone for his costs. It was less than what the private school costs Were

my brother went to potsdam for a summer music camp when he was in high school.

he was good enough to go professionally into music . He wanted a better careerr.

a friend of ours is a music teacher and I think plays with BPO. His cousin is in a local band that does things sbout once a month. Another one of out friends has a jazz quartet and does weddings/ weekend music gigs.
music is more of a side gig than a career unless you can get into a band…even then it’s like college where who succeeds generally is such a crapshoot If you aren’t in a hot market.

Roughing it for me is no room service after 11. I get totally bored at cottages, beaches, ocean cruises and under no circumstances want to go camping. Growing up on a farm with all that entailed led me to set my life in a different path. Horses for courses and all that. You have some great authors there--but add Lee Child, Dave Duncan, Lee Modessitt, Jim Butcher, Mark Greaney and David Baldacci for page turning fun.

Last year was Jim Butcher. Read the first 3 Dresden in a week at Watkins. I'm working my way through Gibson's "The Peripheral" at the moment.

I read Butcher last year as well. Baldacci is one of my favorite authors, too. Read "The Camel Club" series for some really good older Baldacci stuff.
