The funny part is that had Torts made the personnel choices in those OT games, there’s at least a decent chance they have at least one or two more points and are probably still a playoff spot. But according to some, making those kinds of deployment choices is not within a coach’s control.

Of course I realize that and, like Torts, I think tanking is asinine.

There are quite a few Buffalo fans I know that swear that tanking broke their franchise and they still haven't recovered from it. Heck you're not even guaranteed winning the lottery any more. It's a dumb idea.

I think Tortorella is one of the best coaches in the league in squeezing the most out of a roster of middle 6 players and try hards. But the 4 playoff rounds won since 2004 seems more relevant to contending than questing for a participation trophy. "He squeezed so much out of this mediocre roster!" Who cares?

He's already won a Cup, and I think a not so small part of him prefers to coach teams of this talent level. He can instill his culture mystique in a win-win climate of low expectations, without assuming blame in situations of high expectations. I don't think he's ever found a sucker quite like the Flyers.

After the Vancouver debacle I don’t think it’s a coincidence he picked Columbus & here given he was coming into both with little to no expectations for different reasons.

Outside of a prime Panarin his Columbus rosters mirrored what they had this year when he got more control over the roster compared to year one.

Also his last four stops he went to teams with Lundqvist, Luongo, Bobrovsky, & Hart in place. I don’t think that’s a coincidence either. Regardless of what ultimately happened to Luongo & Hart I think he went into those jobs thinking he had his goalie. Now I just got to find my middle to bottom of the lineup defensive grinder types.

The Vancouver job was a pretty poorly choice by him especially in hindsight. You had a team that wasn’t too far removed from a SCF appearance so the expectations were still relatively high & GM who needed to get turned around too. But the roster probably just wasn’t there regardless & they would ultimately bottom out in the coming years.

No matter what happens they find a way to say Torts sucks and if it wasn't Torts it would be someone else and if they run out of people on the team they will attack fans instead.

We aren't even a year removed from him being absolutely enamored with Cates and thinking he's better than Frost despite that obviously not being true. Why would we want anything that ridiculously biased and unreasonable making player evaluations and development choices?

If you think people here would have complained about TORTS losing games, maybe do some back reading. Everyone here would have been happy with another bottom 10, or less, finish.

If you do that back reading, you'll also find plenty of folks, myself included, who (once it was clear that wasn't going to happen) would have rather made the playoffs than finish just outside.

They just spent last offseason getting rid of players he wanted gone. They tried to get rid of Sanheim but fortunately they somehow failed. Tortorella was voted the most hated coach in the NHL, even over Babcock, in a players poll a few years ago.

That's not the time. Last year was about getting rid of crap. There's a process and we shall see how it goes.

The cap is completely fixed in 2025 and at that point we should have several rookie contracts as well so lots of room. You don't fix a mess like Fletcher left in one year.
