I am not defending Torts here but making the current situation (team floundering) about him may be a calculated move...I remember coaches used to use this strategy (ie: Hitchcock) to keep the pressure off the players so they could focus on the game while attention falls on the coach.

The year the Flyers first claimed Leighton, it ended up being the worst season in franchise history at the time. Then Carolina got him. They went from being Cup Winners the year before, into a collapse of misery. Then we claimed him again, and in short order went from a Cup contending roster to the agony we've known since.

It's Leighton.
Making Bob a backup to Bryz was horrible for his development as well along with an obtuse goalie coach. The Columbus goalie coach identified a fundamental flaw with his stance and glove right away when they got him. The Flyers were pretty much mocked over it from articles at the time of the trade. Mason was an ok fill in but the Flyers obviously did not do their due dilligence with scouting Bryz, Bob's usage and development and then his overall trade value at least in hindsight...but still......an organization's success is built on foresight and not hindsight excuses.

This has been the Flyers MO....followers (let's model our teams after the last Stanley Cup winner or the Isles)...not trend setters.

Those who follow never come in first as they say....

*Responded out of context to the wrong post but you all get my point about how dumb the Flyers have been...

I know this will probably be unpopular, but I do feel that Torts, from the 90 second clip he gave to the media, that he really honestly meant what he said and I'm glad he knows he f***ed up. I also do think that the Flyers got this far despite the odds and they could stay there, but I do think Torts is still the wrong person for the direction of this team. His position should of been a rebuilding coach and not in the current position. He's also someone that I think has improved some but also straight alienated other players, which is NOT a great feeling. He also makes terrible line and personnel decisions day in and day out. The fact that he still wants Rocky Thompson around and the fact that he doesn't give a f*** about who plays on the PP (and where) and the OT shows how out of f***ing touch he is. I also can't shake that he's a reason, not THE reason, that Gauthier wanted out too.

Basically, yeah, he got a lot out of a team that CLEARLY should not be in the playoff picture, but he is right, they are here and now and technically you should try to go for it. I just wish Torts wasn't here at all, and to give this team a proper rebuild and become a way stronger team in the future, but that didn't happen.

It's the same crap that ran Lavy out. They say he's being too tough on the players. BS. Entitled athletes. Tell me how great Sullivan is. He's been blessed with an overflow of talent and a leader in Crosby. A generational player. Something we haven't had in ages. Great players we don't have yet. What we've had lately is poor management. It' the players can't handle toughness then we need players that can. Suck it up

Poor management is the reason this team doesn't even try to acquire generational players. Too "proud", they have to build a team "the right way".

In other words, poor management is a feature, not a bug.

Most players believe a tough coach is an asshole. Which ones are more often successful? Give him some real talent that wants to win and I'd bet on him.

You realize we've only had one 1st overall and don't count Lindros. We gave away a Stanley cup in talent to get him

This was also the start of an interesting trend that really became clear with AV. Homer was asking Lavi to run a defensive system at the time. He tried to reconcile what he preferred with what his boss wanted, and confusion reigned. They hire Berube. Berube coached way more conservatively here than he did in St Louis. I always described them as "deliberate." Heavy emphasis on defensive safety and minimizing risk, and with the way this team chases particular examples I have no doubt they were trying to copy Tortorella in large part. Hakstol? His Kraken teams so far are way more open than the pure perimeter hockey slog he provided here. The real kicker was when AV, who doesn't have any idea that defense even exists, suddenly tried for the first time in his career to have his team play risk-free defensively minded hockey and it was a debacle.

Finally, they just hired someone native to the preferred style. I think it is very, very likely that The Common Denominators have demanded their coaches play their rosters in a style that heavily favors defense. Which in turn seems to have begun when they were panicking and trying to figure out how to make Bryzgalov workable. Which in turn happened because they panicked over Bob after ridiculously committing to Leighton as starter while he was hiding an injury.

Everything goes back to Leighton.

they will never get real talent until they commit to an actual rebuild..and if you are going full rebuild..you really don't want a guy like Torts as the coach for that

Worst thing about now, is other than MM there is ZERO hope.

Before we always had prospects.

There was always the hope they would get out of the dino ages, but now they have Quadrupled down on it, there is no hope of being a contending team,

A try hard bunch of plugs that may sneak into the playoffs sure, but no shot of being good.

Would anyone bet $5 that this team will have more points next year ? I would bet they regress back to bottom 7 team

i think the likely outcome of next year is to be the same or just slightly less, but miss out because all the rest of the Metro/East will not be as poor as they were this year...we just do not have the talent

He went nowhere the last time he had that in NY. In fact he held them back and they were much better once free of him.

You're crazy if you think he's gone after next year. He will have his longest tenure with a team in Philly 100%
He can have a long tenure with the Flyers as long as he's not the coach. Let him look up and book flights on the internet for their road games or something....

You think the front office group is disappointed with him enough to have him on the hot seat, after naming him a part of the triumvirate before the season? You guys can wish for his failure all you want but the front office doesn't see it that way and with 0 expectations there's no reason to move on from him
