Torts has an above average shelf life for NHL coaches. They average 3 years and he got 6/7 for NYR, ~6 for TBL, ~6 for CBJ, 1 with Vancouver, and Philly he is probably trending for 3.

Torts has Main Character Syndrome.

Had a crazy day fighting off floodwater in subtropical NJ yesterday so I am just digesting this fully.

WHAT A f***IN BOZO

I will never get over "So be it...If players want to quit on me because I'm trying to make them better people..." They should erect a cross ouside Xfinity Live! so this narcissistic asshole can nail himself to it. What the hell did I just read, oh my god.

The problem with Torts is hes not just the coach, theyve made him the face of the franchise. Other than maybe Clarke, no one has more of a say than he does. Hes the face of the rebuild...so getting rid of him means tearing down the whole "new era".

Hearing how unhinged he was yesterday is particularly concerning when you realize the franchises future is in his hands.

and he was too hard on the players and they tuned him out....
They should have fired him in the offseason when it was clear the players tuned him out.

Having said this, he was undermined by Holmgren and Snider in many respects to cover for the Bryzaster signing....basically forced him to introduce a new defensive "wrinkle" to his offensive system. Why they traded JVR who was ideal for his system for Luke effin Schenn who was supposed to make Bryz look better than he was. Bryz was a system goalie from the outset in AZ. Instead, Schenn attempted to stay at home and block shots and looked like a one legged flamingo doing so while Bryz became a mental basket case. Yet we doubled down on him and let Bob go......

This is just one dumb franchise....

Hextall tried a 'new' coach method... probably one of the biggest disasters ever.

Both sides have merit on keeping or firing Torts, but just the sake of firing him without an adequate replacement is not the answer.

Didn't do them much good this year anyways...

Eh, I think hiring a guy with no experience because he coached your son isn't what I'd term a "new" approach for a team and management tree that once hired a guy for making Clarke laugh.

“Pushing” translates to “being an unbearable **** that players hate and succeed in spite of”, but of course he thinks he deserves the credit and all of his shameless groupies eat this shit up.

I did greatly enjoy watching Tortorella limit the upside of a very good NYR roster while also battering the hell out of them. Which happens to be the biggest reason I have never wanted him here. There's a reason why his biggest fans tend to be fans of other teams.

It's been "dumb" since Keith Allen's departure...

Near the end Lavs was absolute $hit from what I recall...

This was also the start of an interesting trend that really became clear with AV. Homer was asking Lavi to run a defensive system at the time. He tried to reconcile what he preferred with what his boss wanted, and confusion reigned. They hire Berube. Berube coached way more conservatively here than he did in St Louis. I always described them as "deliberate." Heavy emphasis on defensive safety and minimizing risk, and with the way this team chases particular examples I have no doubt they were trying to copy Tortorella in large part. Hakstol? His Kraken teams so far are way more open than the pure perimeter hockey slog he provided here. The real kicker was when AV, who doesn't have any idea that defense even exists, suddenly tried for the first time in his career to have his team play risk-free defensively minded hockey and it was a debacle.

Finally, they just hired someone native to the preferred style. I think it is very, very likely that The Common Denominators have demanded their coaches play their rosters in a style that heavily favors defense. Which in turn seems to have begun when they were panicking and trying to figure out how to make Bryzgalov workable. Which in turn happened because they panicked over Bob after ridiculously committing to Leighton as starter while he was hiding an injury.

Everything goes back to Leighton.

I remember when we first got Bob and in the playoffs he would sit in the stands prior to the game and just watch the empty rink...I thought he was a keeper then. That constant yanking of Bob in the playoffs was the most a$$inine things ever and then things really went off the rails with Bryzaster.

All because they grabbed Leighton off waivers. I often wish that we had let him go instead, then Carolina and Philly would have their current situations switched.

The year the Flyers first claimed Leighton, it ended up being the worst season in franchise history at the time. Then Carolina got him. They went from being Cup Winners the year before, into a collapse of misery. Then we claimed him again, and in short order went from a Cup contending roster to the agony we've known since.

It's Leighton.
