Definitely. The first month or so was brutal, with Tiedemann injured, Martinez batting around .050, Barger injured and struggling.
I think the biggest disappointments in the Jays system have been Barriera, mostly due to injury, and Toman. Toman has struggled with the bat.
Aight so what are we thinking? Horwitz to platoon with Vladdy at first ala Belt, Barger to replace Chapman at 3b and Martinez to backup Barger/Bo and pinch hit? Not looking forward to having to replace Chapman’s defence at 3rd, but if Barger can keep hitting for power and average at the MLB level it should be fine.In Buffalo tonight...
Horwitz: 2 for 3, 2 HR, 1 BB (LOL - OPS up to .933)
Martinez: 3 for 4, 2B
Barger: 3 for 4
Exit velocities:
108.7 - Barger (Single)
107.8 - Horwitz (HR)
105.9 - Barger (GIDP)
103.9 - Barger (Single)
100.9 - Horwitz (Groundout)
100.4 - Martinez (Single)
99.9 - Martinez (Single)
97.1 - Horwitz (HR)
Barger is an absolute unit. Legit three more bats in AAA likely ready next season.
On the topic of Doughty, Kasevich, Barriera, and Toman I was thinking the other day about that draft class and this years. Maybe it's the shiny new toy syndrome and early struggles from the 2022 class talking but despite having 2 comp picks in 2022 and not having a 2nd rounder in 2023 am I crazy in thinking the 2 draft classes for the Jays are close? Using their mlb pre draft rankings as a comparable
HS Pitcher Barriera ranked 15 v HS SS Nimmala ranked 11
HS SS/3B Toman ranked 35 v HS Pitcher Maroudis ranked 72
College 2B Doughty ranked 55 v College OF Bohrofen ranked 66
College SS Kasevich ranked 67 v College Pitcher Watts-Brown ranked 67
College OF Roden ranked 175 v College SS Goodwin ranked 163
College Pitcher Fluharty unranked v College Pitcher O'Halloran ranked 164
Brock, Williams, etc v Barry, Shaw, etc for the other top 10 rounds
I like the Gallagher, Perry, Stanifer, Hernandez round 11+ group from 2022 better than Brennan Orf and other stuff from this year.
Seems a lot closer to me than it probably should considering we essentially had 3 more 2nd rounders in 2022.
Jays are first in the league in ERA (starter and relievers)

And first in the league in defensive runs saved;

Looks like the focus on run prevention is working but the offense of 2021 unfortunately is long gone. Let's hope the timely hitting comes soon because thats the difference between a good to a great team.
Lets find out if defense truly wins championships.
You could move him for starting pitching prospects which we badly need outside of Ricky T.
Cause our farm system is depleted. Outside of Ricky T and Barriera we lack in that department big timeAnd why do we "need" that? We have Gausman/Berrios/Manoah for 3+ years.
We currently have a ton of outfield/INF prospect depth, if we were to move Vladdy for sure pitching would be top priorityAnd why do we "need" that? We have Gausman/Berrios/Manoah for 3+ years.

If Chapman walks, I’m wondering if the Padres would want save money and clear a glut at the left side infielders.
Vladdy for Tatis, Machado or Xander? And the Jays can either go after a 1B (Votto or Belt) or roll with Horwitz.
He's an easy replacement for Belt. What's promising is the power is coming along nicely. These are Spencer Horwitz's AAA numbers before and after his brief promotion to the Jays in June:
Before: 259 PA, .300/.421/.405, 116 wRC+, 2 HR, 16.2 BB%, 17.8 K%, .105 ISO
After: 151 PA, .375/.490/.625, 180 wRC+, 7 HR, 17.2 BB%, 12.6 K%, .250 ISO
And that doesn't include today's 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
I doubt we'll see much of him the rest of the way, but I'm super comfortable penciling him in for a roster spot on Opening Day next year.
